Aqueon LED Aquarium Light Fixture, 30-Inch

Aqueon LED Aquarium Light Fixture, 30-InchStrong and stylish construction. Easy to install. Better than marineland's led because it's bulb can be replaced or upgraded. Daylight feature is nice and bright with just one bulb and the moonglow option is a nice feature, something marineland does not have. Overall, excellent purchase of a aqueon product.

I ordered this along with an extra daylight bulb and a "colormax" bulb.

So far I couldn't be happier. Easy to set up with the extra lights, fits well on the tank, bright as hell. It's hard to make a direct before-and-after comparison because my fluorescent fixture died a while ago and I've been using a single incandescent plant growing bulb while waiting for this to show up. I can say that it's MUCH better than a single 60w plant incandescent bulb, for whatever that testimony is worth.

The moonlight feature is pretty cool. I had been using a blue LED bubble strip as a night-light of sorts, but I'll likely unplug that and use the moonlight function on this light instead. It's much more diffused and less abrasive than what I had.

What an amazing light for a tank, much brighter than the florescent lights. Little pricey yet, but to me, was worth it. I am using this on a salt water tank.

I was setting up a new 29 gallon aquarium for the kids in the living room and I didn't want to go with the traditional light fixture that uses fluorescent tubes since I wanted something more energy efficient and aesthetically pleasing. I started looking at LED light fixtures and found that most of the ones available were still expensive and priced out of my budget. To that end, I was going to purchase the Marineland Single Bright LED Lighting System, but then when I saw Aqueon had a modular LED light fixture. After considerable research, I went with the one from Aqueon for the following reasons:

Pros:

+ Modular design; allows you to expand up to two additional LED strips for a total of three.

+ Cost; Affordable compared to other brands which costs at least 1.5 2x or even more.

+ Sleek, stylish, and clean contemporary design without much weight.

Cons:

"Moon Glow" accent or mode is powered by just two blue LEDs and can't be controlled independently such as a timer as it is operated on a 3-way power switch (Moon Glow, OFF, and Regular LED mode), unless you modify it as some have done.

The illumination and light penetration from the Aqueon LED light fixture is bright, on a 29 gallon tank (30.3" x 12.5" x 18.8"). While I am not using any "live" plants (for now), based on my research, the single LED light fixture is apparently sufficient for those who are planning to have low-light plants. You can always supplement the fixture with additional LED strips thanks to the modular design of the fixture.

Note: I have uploaded several photos on the LED light fixture as it pertains to my setup.

U.P. Aqua Shrimp Sand

U.P. Aqua Shrimp SandI've raised allot of different plants on allot of different substrates, and by far this stuff is my favorite. its a nice alternative to the much more expensive ADA amazonia. the only downside is the size its only about enough to fill a standard 5 gallon tank.

This substrate can't no longer buff my water ph. it's only been 4 months of use and my shrimp tank water can't go any lower than 7 ph.

I really like this product for my shrimp tanks.Works well, just rinse off and use.Shrimp love to look for food in it.Just the right size.

I purchased several bags of U.P. Aqua Shrimp Substrate for a couple tanks (20 Long PFR/10 PRL) based off of being newer to the market and a few glowing reviews. Here in the US we do not get many of the substrates that are available in HK, Japan, and Europe due to import restrictions and lack of importers in general.

Overall, it does look good and is what I would consider the only reason I haven't gave it away. Small ~1MM grains are easy for shrimp to play with, and several of my PFRs like to actually dig into it while scavenging. The reason they are able to interact with it so much is entirely due to the lightweight of the grains. Planting anything with buoyancy is frustrating without using inert weights, including Java Ferns which will "walk" around the tank at night without them in the currents. Waving a few fingers through the water and creating a current will send little black grains everywhere. Ph Buffering ability is pretty much non-existent unless you fill 1/5 of a 10G tank which wasn't a primary concern of mine as I use a 5 stage RO/DI anyways. Tested with both house tap, RO, grocery store mineral water and could not see any significant Ph buffering. There was no ammonia spike detected which is nice.

That being said, it would look incredible in a small desk nano as long as you are not depending on it to do much else than be inert. In that aspect I gave it 3 stars on looks alone, and it didn't give me any cloudiness issues to speak of. I will keep it in a few tanks, but I cannot say I am willing to spend that much again for an inactive substrate. There are much better values around here (twice as much product, actually buffer 6.5, and cost half the price).

This is an exceptionally clean and attractive substrate and so far I am very impressed. It rinses nearly clear and partial water changes do not cloud the water. One bag does a 10 gallon tank adequately.

Hagen LED Bulb for Fluval Edge I

Hagen LED Bulb for Fluval Edge IIt got old (and expensive) replacing the halogen bulbs every few months. So I switched to these and they're wonderful. Not too expensive but much brighter, don't get as hot, and should last a very long time. This is an easy decision, get these bulbs. Highly recommended.

At only 1.8 watts per light, these two replacement light almost double the light output of the 2-10 watt halogen bulbs originally supplied with the edge aquarium at a fraction of the cost in running them. Not to mention the bulb life. These will pay for themselves in electricity saved in no time.

These bulbs are everything they claim to be.They are bright and definitely waterproof. I have purchased cheaper bulbs at half the cost, but had to replace them in less than 2 months as they are not waterproof, and individual leds burned out, and the light became dimmer. The old saying "you get what you pay for" is true. Highly recommend.

I had previously purchased other LED's for my Fluval, but was always weary of the fact that they were not the Fluval brand. So I was very excited when Fluval finally decided to release their own LED's. I feel that Fluval's lights match the light quality of the others I had previously purchased and are much safer as they have a thin covering, protecting the lights from water damage.

K&H 8001 Thermo-Pond 3.0 Floating Pond 100-Watt De-Icer

K&H 8001 Thermo-Pond 3.0 Floating Pond 100-Watt De-IcerI've used this for one season, in the Washington, DC area. We don't have a lot of cold weather, but we get down to 0 degrees occasionally. In a small pond with a rubber liner, I was concerned about a "toaster element" heater melting the liner. This heater kept a perfect round hole in the ice even when it got to 3 inches thick and the fish seemed to enjoy spending time under it. The trick with this thing seems to be that while it has a very large surface area (it's about 12 inches across) it has a small air hole at the top. This apparently lets out all the toxic gases, but manages to keep enough heat in to keep the full circle ice free. There's never any sense that the device is hot, but it always just floats freely with a quarter inch gap between it and the ice. I don't actually know for sure, but I suspect that it will work fine to considerably lower temps (they say they tested in -30 degree Wisconsin) and I'm sure it's not dependent on the size of the pond. That is, it won't freeze even if the pond is bigger. However, you might need additional units to handle extra gas from a larger pond. All in all, a very well constructed, simple, safe and satisfactory device.

my family went through 6 of these over the last 3 years! seemed like a great idea..worked ok for about 2 -3 weeks, then they ALL leaked in water, tipped sideways or sunk and did not work well at all. HAd to return them all. seems are not sealed properly. finally gave up on them when manufacturer admitted they'd had nothing but complaints from almost everyone they sold them to. unless they can guarantee they've found and fixed the problem, I would NOT recommend it!

Overall I like the Thermopond and I'm going to try another one. It worked great for 3.5 years and has a long power cord. The company does honor their warranty and has fast turn around. The current temp is +5F so I need to do something fast. The modes of failure described elsewhere do seem to be common I've experienced both myself. From just failing to turn on to taking on water and sinking. When it it works it works great.

I purchased my first one back in 2005 and it worked fine the first year, but the next year it didn't even turn on. The company quickly and without hassle sent me a replacement. The second unit had been working like a charm since 2006... It started working fine this season and then around Christmas 2009 the GFCI popped. I went out and noticed that the thermopond was listing to one side and semi-submerged. It was full of water and the plastic on the underside was deformed and puffed out.

I live in northern Vermont. Thermopond has kept a hole all winter no matter what the temp is (-10F a few years ago). The ice depth was ~10 inches last year and I could see down through the thermopond to the bottom of the pond. I pull it up to check on the fish and they swim over to see me through the hole. I also have a small winter pump (650gph) running as a homemade bubbler. The pump keeps a hole in the ice down to +15F (lower when there's a lot of snow holding the ground temp in). The two manage to keep a very large (25%) opening when the temps are in the upper 20's and mid-30's. My pond is about 2000 gals (3100gph summer pump). I also put out a whip a few years ago to hold the cord up out of the water and keep the thermopond from drifting around in the wind.

Thermopond works, just be prepared to buy a new one every 3 or 4 years ($14 per year). Weigh that with a lower electric bill and this does seem to be a good deal. I'm hoping they've improved the design since I last bought it.

I have a 220 gallon backyard pond, and live in Chicago. I used to use pumps to agitate the water and keep an open spot that way, but the small size pumps I used were not all that durable. I bought this de-icer for less then the price of a 300 GPH pump. I did read all the reviews, and some said the de-icer was not as durable as it should be, but most of those reviews were from a couple years back so I am thinking they have improved it.

This de-icer has maintained a small opening in the ice all Winter. The temperature has dropped down to single digits for brief periods as well as some spells in the teens.

This product meets my needs quite well. Next Winter I will buy another one and save it as a back up de-icer and consider it insurance.

Using 100 watts could be costly to keep this plugged in all the time. I just ran an extension cord to my garage and turned it on when i noticed the water began to freeze. We had 4 inches of ice on our pond this last winter and this heater worked flawlessly.

Lifegard Aquatics Digital Temp Alert

Lifegard Aquatics Digital Temp AlertI purchased this item from an online pet store. I liked the fact that it is a good size and it is easy to read. However, it only worked for a year. The unit continuously malfunctioned even after installing new batteries figuring that would have been the problem. Unfortunately it wasn't. It kept saying it was over 100 degrees in the tank. My fish would have been like scrambled eggs in my tank if that were true. Luckily I had a portable PH/thermometer handy to double check for accuracy. I had to order a completely different thermometer. I don't normally write bad reviews on products, but I wanted to let you know so you don't make the same mistake. If you are looking at a digital thermometer, then I would recommend one made by Coralife. It is small, but works great.

This is great while it works. In my case it lasted about two years. These thermometers are invaluable when setting up a tank and setting heaters. They will eventually start reading high, but they are worth the price.

Tough to rate as it seems to be accurate enough but that is not the end of the story.

The device display is quite over sized at approximately 4"x4", which for many will be a benefit as the display digit readout numbers are over 1" tall. But with the logo in pink and bold white thick type, it takes on a toy-like quality and looks cheap....which it's not. That said, that's all about personal preference.

My problem is more about the cord length on the probe. At 39", far too short for me. I'm using a 65 gallon tank that's 24" tall. OK, so if I place the probe 12" into the water... and want to wall-mount the display (it comes with a wall bracket for that purpose), I'm stretching the cord to get it where I want it and also creating a hazard. Not good.

So, I bought a different brand (Lab Safety Supply, Inc. part #148464) sold here and elsewhere for about $22 that has a waterproof probe and a very ample cord. Very compact and professional unit and that also has hi/low temp alerts but for the probe only (which for most people does the job just fine).

Lifegard could do much better on this one. Please make your cord longer.

The thermometer worked fine for about 2 years, but now the in-tank temperature reads about 8-10 degrees F too high. I contacted the manufacturer to request a replacement but was denied as the product only carries a 1-year warranty.

Laguna PowerJet 2400 Electronic Fountain Pump Kit

Laguna PowerJet 2400 Electronic Fountain Pump KitI just purchased the PowerJet 2400 and the pump cage was improperly assembled at the factory. The top was forced during assembly and broke a hole in the top of the cage. I spoke with a Laguna (Hagen) representative who expected me to ship the unit to them and they would decide the course of action. This is completely unacceptable as I need a pump now. Their attitude of "the customer is wrong until proven right" is not one I care to do business with. I expect to receive a non-defective product whenever I buy something and sure do not expect to pay freight to return their defective product to them.

10/18/2010 I patched up the broken portion and have been using this pump continuously for almost 2 years and it has functioned perfectly. The small holes in the cage do plug up with algae growing on the screen and in some particularly heavy growth periods it has to be cleaned frequently. I have compared several pumps and this is the lowest wattage pump for the flow rate I have found. Actual measurements even taking consideration of the power factor it draws only 83 Watts. I am completely satisfied with the pump and am considering another only this time the Max Flo pump for the larger holes in the cage.

I chose this pump because it is the direct replacement for the one I replaced in my small fish pond. The price was the best I found by far and I received the pump sooner than was expected.

Como Coral Style Silicone Fish Tank Decor Aquarium Ornament Dark Pink

Como Coral Style Silicone Fish Tank Decor Aquarium Ornament Dark PinkBought this one and a larger one and both have been awesome additions to their tanks. The colors are intensely vibrant and have huge impact among greenery. Small fish and algae eaters love munching on the food particles that settle in, and I put one in my shrimp tank where it is equally popular. Cons: Expect slow shipping from mfr. And, since they're from China, soak and rinse carefully before putting in tanks. PROS: I was impressed by their quality. They don't quite pass for real anomenoes up close but actually look much realer than most of the colored plants now selling. They sink easily and sit stably on the bottoms. After 1-2 months submerged, they are as bright as the day they first went in. Can't beat it for the money, IMO.

Marina Cool Goldfish Kit

Marina Cool Goldfish Kit, Purple, Small/1.77-GallonWe bought this tank at Petsmart for about $23. Cheap. But it brought so much heartache to our family. I wish I had read all the reviews, maybe with modifications I could have saved my daughter's Black Molly. The 2 guppies that we first got were killed by the filter within 48 hours. Their beautiful tail got caught in by the filter. Molly (the black Molly) was smarter and quickly figured out that one should not get close to the front if the filter. But 12 days later she died of stress. I could not understand why as we kept water at perfect conditions, water changes every 2 days, a little salt, heater to keep temp constant, etc. I mean, I put a LOT of work in keeping that fish alive because I did not want to break my child's heart after the guppy fiasco. Well, after reading the review about the constant whirlpool, it ALL makes sense! This poor fish would hide inside this castle decor or hover right at the top of the water at the side of the filter, avoiding at all costs the larger front area of the tank. I thought she was skiddish. Now I see she was trying to survive the whirlpool. But I guess eventually she succumbed to exhaustion and stress. We found her dead this morning.

We will try the sock, sponge & change position of the filter for the new Molly, Cole. We can't put anything bigger in her bedroom. But I extremely regret having gone for this kit. :(

THIS kit come with everything but heater and light .my betta loves it .it big enough to add a nice size ornament .filter a bit strong but for 18.00 dollars can,t complain .i have yet to find a better deal on a one gallon for my other betta so i just order 1 more for her .wouldnt put gold fish in but perfect for my betta,s

I purchased this tank for my daughter for her fifth birthday. I am happy with the construction of it, as well as the child-accessible feed-opening in the lid. The size is just right for a little kid, and the colors and decorations are lovely. That being said, it IS a starter tank, and is probably not actually a very good choice for gold fish, as they grow so large. The tank does not come with a heater or a lighting system (which can be purchased separately), so the best choice of fish is a Betta. I understand that most people say that Bettas need a minimum of five-gallons of water, but that hasn't been my experience with any Betta I have ever owned, and our fish is presently quite happy swimming about his 2.65 Gallon bachelor pad. Overall, it's a decent product for the price.

Hagen's website shows product warning and recall for units manufactured during certain dates. The air filter included with my aquarium is one of them. It's too powerful to run fulltime. My fish are swimming frantically in the turbulence. Two became trapped against grill overnight. In morning, found them dead.

This is not a good aquarium. First of all for the price...It is $25 down the drain. The filter is entirely too big for this aquarium. There is way too much suction and the fish get sucked in and die. It is plastic and dark. There is no light. It is way too small for more than one fish. And forget about putting any decor in here. Only one thing will fit. Look further than this piece of plastic junk.
