Tetra Half Moon Aquarium Kit, 10-Gallon

Tetra Half Moon Aquarium Kit, 10-GallonI used to own a number of tanks and my dad bred fish when we were growing up, so we had as many as 30 tanks in our house at once. I finally convinced my wife to get a tank for our children, which we wanted to fit on their tall dresser in their bedroom. The regular rectangular shaped 10 gallon was a little too big, so we went with the half moon. We have had this one up for just over a week now.

Pros:

Small foot print so it fit onto a narrow/ tall dresser

Super quiet filter, perfect for the kids bedroom.

I like that it is taller than a normal 10 gallon so the plants can grow taller.

The filter seems to pump plenty of water for the tank. You can really see the water movement and if the fish don't eat quickly, some of the food will get sucked into the filter within just a few minutes. The water has been crystal clear.

Cons:

I don't like that they taped things to the inside of the tank when they shipped it. You don't want to use soap or goo gone inside a tank so that you don't kill the fish and it was a bear to clean off the glue with a paper towel.

Because the tank is narrow and tall, you have less surface area, so it technically will hold less fish than a regular 10 gallon tank

The half moon distorts the fish at certain angles and you have to move around to see the corners

Did not come with net or glass scraper

We are happy with the tank and based on our requirements, it fit our needs. The kids love the tank and we have 6 fish in it so far, 3 midnight tetras, 1 glofish and 2 molly's. We plan to add a cat and possibly a siamese fighter, but the number of fish will definitely be maxed at that point.

I just set up this tank today and immediately noticed the poor quality filter that came with this aquarium. I don't like the idea of an open top on the filter plus there are so many better filters on the market that will fit this tank. I am also not crazy about the provided top. It's just a piece of plastic that sits loosely on top of the tank with a hole in the front for feeding and two holes in the back for the heater and filter. They should have made this a hinged lid instead as there is a chance fish will jump out. Poor design! However, the tank looks beautiful and with a few minor adjustments, it will be a nice addition to my office. If you do decide to add a better filter, use the AquaClear 20. It's fantastic and will keep the aquarium in much better shape than the provided filter. Fits perfectly. Just remove the cut out portion of the back of the lid and the AquaClear fits beautifully. The AquaClear has a lid so the water is not exposed and requires very little maintenance.

We bought this tank today and after setting it up, we absolutely love it. I wanted an elegant/stylish tank, and that is exactly what I got.

Things that I love about the tank:

1. Shape the half moon shape is great for viewing your fish, plus, it is a nice change from traditional rectangular fish tanks

2. The filter is very quiet

3. The filter replacements are not very expensive (I looked them up after purchasing the tank)

4. The LED light is bright and does not require much energy

5. The heater can be placed almost anywhere in the tank, allowing you to hide it behind plants or water features.

Things to note:

1. While I love the light, the tank that is the next size up comes with a day/night LED light feature which allows you to use one light for both day and night, instead of purchasing a separate night-time light if you want to view your tank during off hours without stressing your fish out.

2. The filter does not have a lid, so it is a little unfinished looking if you are standing directly over the tank

3. I wish the instructions would have been a little more visual and less technical. We wanted to get the tank set up quickly, and had to stop for each item and read the long instruction sheets.

While we've only had the tank and set up for one day, we absolutely love it. It is a stunning feature in our home.

For a total of about six weeks, this was an attractive and enjoyable aquarium.

I bought this kit looking for a decorative aquarium to hold about five fresh water fancy goldfish. The tall tank with its clear lid has a lot of eye appeal: the fish and contents are much more visible than in more conventional tanks with a dark rim or a hood obstructing the upper portion. For a ten gallon tank, it has a lot of viewing area.

While the filter is nothing fancy, it does the job well provided that the tank is kept properly filled and the filter's waterfall edge is positioned not too far above the waterline. Positioned like this the system is admirably quiet, but if either the fill level is off or the filter is improperly positioned, you will experience splashing and quicker evaporation losses. It is not a bubbler-type system, so if you need to have a lot of air injected into the water you'll want a different pump/filter.

I was happy with my aquarium for aboout five days when I noticed it was leaking at the bottom left corner. I returned it and received an immediate replacement. This worked fine until, about five weeks later, I awoke to a significantly lower water level in the tank, and a correspondingly upsetting puddle on my stand and floor. I was willing to accept the first failure as a fluke, but after the second tank's failure I gave up on this item and bought another manufacturer's product.

After dissassembling the failed tank I noticed that the silicone sealant between the front curved glass, the flat glass backplate, and the plastic base appeared to have been sloppily applied in several places, including at least one place where the leaks occurred. There were a couple of other spots where upon close inspection I could see voids or finger grooves. Maybe my two tanks were made on the same day by the same inexperienced or careless assembler, and/or checked by the same indifferent inspector. Whatever the cause, poor quality control is what soured me on this product. If you really like this tank's looks in spite of its problems, I recommend you consider applying extra sealant to the seams along the inside of the base and hopefully avoid the issues I experienced.

Something with the curve of the glass and sudden light changes drives fish to jump out! I've had this tank for a year and a half and have lost close to 20 fish. I had 1 type in there and after 5-6 jumped, I decided to move it and stock it with different fish. Same results, very upsetting to find your favorite fish dried up behind the tank/stand. Platies, Guppies, Cories, ...doesn't seem to matter, they all jump. Stay away from this tank or completely cover with saran wrap or plexiglass cut to perfect size. This will keep your fish alive, but I don't think they will be very happy.

Penn Plax Tank Terrace Master Kit

Penn Plax Tank Terrace Master KitThe product that I received was not what the picture looked like. It is brown with no other colors or plants. The base of the unit is small. It is made of cheap plastic, and not very stable. I decided just to throw it away, due to the cost of shipping it back. I decided just to purchase real aquarium rocks that have different colors, it also was cheaper than the junk plastic that I got.

We purchased these and washed them well, using them in our tank almost immediately! I loved the idea, and the tank looked great. But sadly, within 3 weeks to a month, the suction cups included in the package began to give out. We tried washing them clean, but they will not stay stuck longer than an hour or so. Our cichlids were sad to lose their hidey holes we had built them, and we were sad to lose the levels. This product is best used in a terrarium as opposed to an aquarium.

Como Single Way Aquarium Control Air Water Flow Lever Valve

Como Single Way Aquarium Control Air Water Flow Lever ValvePurchased this to reduce the air flow from my aquarium air pump to my air stone. This valve is well built and pretty sturdy. It does the job of giving me the control to increase or reduce the amount of bubbles shooting out of my airstone. My tank isn't that big, so I didn't want a crazy amount of bubbles and I wanted something a little more subtle.

These valves are metal to last longer than the common plastic ones. They are very substantial in weight also. works smoothly, and arrived in fast shipping time.

Would definately buy again.

Fluval Edge Aquarium with LED Light, White

Fluval Edge 6-Gallon Aquarium with 21-LED Light, BlackThere are plenty of detailed reviews on the original Fluval Edge. This one, with the 21 LED lighting is the newer model, so when I decided to make my purchase I went with this one, even though it's several dollars more. Personally, from all the comments regarding the lighting issues on the previous model I wouldn't hesitate spending the extra money and opt for this newer model. In reading the other reviews, there isn't much that I can add that hasn't already been said. However, these are the things that I think are major pros and cons:

Biggest Pros: The lighting expands throughout the tank from edge to edge, not just in the center. Better design if you're keeping live plants. Plus, the lights don't get warm at all.

The blue night-lighting is a very nice feature. I use this setting about an hour before I go to bed and it's really relaxing to watch the fish swim in the blue light.

The tank itself is the coolest design I've ever seen. It is extremely impressive to view, and gives the feel of everything being almost weightless. Very soothing.

Biggest Cons:

As everyone has stated before, the opening is small, but I can reach my hand inside from corner to corner without any trouble. Something to think about, though: I bought the bamboo wall accessory and it made the opening even smaller, as it sits right below it. I ended up removing mine and stuck with live plant and rock decorations. It looks just as nice that way, and I have more room to get into the aquarium when needed.

If you want to do any cleaning or need to stick your hand into the aquarium for ANY reason, you MUST remove some of the water first. Otherwise it will spill out of the opening and all over the place.

Bottom line: if you are looking for a tank that is visually stunning to look at and want something completely unusual, you won't be disappointed IF you can live with the few quirks this tank has. If you like rearranging your tank or need to get in and out of it quickly, you may find this more annoying than its worth. I've kept tanks on and off for over 15 years and for me, the beauty of it outweighs what some people would call a nuisance.

I wanted to test the Fluval Edge 46lt/12gl for a few months before jumping in to write about it. When I first received the tank and upon inspection, I found that the column did not have the two clips that attach to the glass tank. Hagen was nice to send me a replacement column but still it was a hassle to disassemble the lighting unit in order to change the correct part.

The first thing that anyone buying this tank must understand is that they are trading usability and functionality for aesthetics. I found myself challenged to make up for the inconvenience of having a small 5"x7" opening where all interaction with the outside world must "fit in". These are the areas that I found the most challenging and dysfunctional about this tank:

FILTRATION:

The form is such that the tank is exactly the same length and width as the smaller 23lt/6gl Fluval Edge only that it is twice it's height. Still this version of the Fluval Edge uses the same HOB Filter as it's smaller counterpart. If the effectiveness of the filter in the 6gl version was good, now it is half as good. I was able to corroborate this fact when I started to develop algae problems in my tank. When I invited a marine biologist/experienced aquarist friend to see my aquarium, the first observation he made was how stagnant and poorly oxygenated the water was towards the bottom half of the tank. As we all know, this lack of aeration and movement is a major cause of poor water quality and algae development. The solutions I found were to replace the HOB filter with an external unit and to add a micro pump like the Koralia 240 Hydor Koralia Nano 240 Aquarium Circulation Pump, 240 gph which worked well. I also tried a Jardin filter sponge with good results Jardin Fish Aquarium Mini Cylinder Soft Sponge Water Filter, Black. Perhaps if the tank would have been longer or wider as opposed to only taller, the opening could have been larger enabling the option of a larger, more powerful HOB filter.

LIGHTS:

Even with the LED improvement, the lighting unit that comes with the tank is only good enough for non-planted tanks or low-light plants such as anubias or ferns. Any other plants requiring medium or high lighting would likely suffer. Problems associated with the low lighting are exacerbated by the poor placement of the lighting unit which is confined to the 5"x7" opening towards the middle back of the tank. Any plants in the aquarium would fare better only if placed directly below this 5"x 7" area. Another limiting factor is that the lighting unit needs to be turned off and raised up in order to access the tank for maintenance. Unless the tank is located next to a bright window (an unlikely scenario) you will basically find yourself performing maintenance in the dark. The addition of an external lighting unit is almost a necessity, even more so in a planted tank. I found a unit called the Padlite by Truelumen TrueLumen Padlite TrueLumen Aquatic LED Strips which worked quite well but it was not cheap.

MAINTENANCE

A major hassle in all respects. For a planted aquarium, trimming plants is almost a nightmare. You are limited by the angles and require large curved scissors. Also all the cuttings accumulate on the top glass and it is quite difficult to clean them up completely. I found that using a sponge soaked in aquarium water helped. A floater magnet cleaner Mag Float Floating Magnet Aquarium Cleaner is a good idea in order to eliminate bubbles and move the accumulated debris/cuttings off the top glass. However I do not recommend this product to clean the glass as the inside magnet/bristles are very rough and will invite any particles floating in the water that will scratch your glass. Catching fish is quite challenging. I have large rocks so imagine trying to catch a pygmy cory through the 5"x7" opening with a fluval edge net?! I resolved, basically, that any fish or invertebrates that go inside the tank stay in the tank forever.

That said, I agree with almost all reviewers here that the tank looks amazing and the fact that all electrical cords and tubing can be hidden inside the back column is a blessing. At least we get a little something in exchange for all the pain.

I've owned Fluval products for years including some large aquariums like the Osaka, and I have to admit I'm a fan. I received the Fluval edge about a week ago and I immediately set it up for my 5 black phantom tetras. At times, I felt like I was setting up a ship in a bottle; it can be a little tight getting your arm in the opening, but overall it wasn't a frustrating venture. No problems with the power filter; I enjoy the easy to access flow adjuster. I decided to add a fluval water polishing pad to the top of the filter media compartment for a little extra shine. I'm just now noticing the nitrite levels starting to rise; so, that's a good sign. I was a bit concerned with the oxygen level issue considering that the actual surface area is only about 5"x 7"; I placed a bubble wand on the tank floor right below the opening. The bubble wand added a nice effect to the tank as well as a visual screen for the power filter intake tube and the heater on the back wall. So far, I have not noticed any fish "panting for air" or any surface breathing. You have to really level the tank if you want to avoid large amounts of air pockets on the top; I have small bubbles form on the top which I'm positive are from my bubble wand, but nothing that can't be remedied by a little manipulation by my small magnet cleaner. I really enjoy the LED lighting; it illuminates the entire tank so well. I also enjoy the moonlight setting. The one water change I did was not that bad, I had to get a gravel vacuum that was much smaller than the one I use just to be able to get the distant corners, but overall not a difficult thing. Overall, I'm enjoying my purchase, and I'm pretty sure my tetra are also.

Amazon sent 3 of them to me and each one arrived damaged. Ouch... Factory box is poorly designed and simply can't offer enough protection. I had to purchase the tank at my local store. Of course Amazon issued me a credit no question asked. So good luck getting yours without a damage. Hope you will.

When you receive your tank, don't get too excited and spontaneously unpack it. Inspect it first! You can easily look inside and check the glass without removing it from the box. Now, if you unpack it first and find any damage later, good luck putting it all back together. Took me long time and it was very irritating.

The tank itself is great. I already own original 6 gallon Fluval Edge and had been hoping for a larger model for a long time.

New tank offers double the capacity (12 gallons) and new improved light. Instead of two halogen bulbs that would last just few weeks, now you get a nice setup of white LEDs with a night mode. Night mode is actually great. Three, dark blue LEDs offer pleasant, ambient light that is non aggressive. You can leave it on for the night.

Assembling is super easy and takes no time. You should be done in just few minutes. I just don't understand how some people find it confusing and challenging.

Light switch is from hell. Hard to access (you must remove the top cover). Once you get there, switching it ON/OFF/NightMode is a pure exercise in patience. Don't give up, it will eventually work. Oh, there is one trap...the light assembly is attached to the power supply via somehow hidden connector inside the rear post where the filter and power cables are located. Double check the connection.

Because of the design of the tank plan ahead of time where you want your plants and decorations. Once the tank is full, you will need to remove some water to put your arm in and make changes.

The tank looks great! It is elegant and classy. I love the clean, simple lines. I used it to replace my 16 gallons conventional tank with an ugly traditional hood. My only regret I waited for too long to switch.

The price is great. You get the glass, light, hood, filter with the media and even water treatment chemicals. All put together it is a nice deal. So if you decide getting one Enjoy!

I got the 12 gallon cube set up for freshwater. Lighting is fine, filter is quiet and efficient and has flow regulation. It is soooo beautiful, but bear in mind you're sacrificing a certain amount of convenience for that beauty. That's why I deducted 1 star. The problem is the small access port on the top of this tall tank. This makes reaching down into the tank awkward and difficult. You'll find that frustrating. One important tip before you set up this tank: Google "aquarium plant anchors." Whether plastic or live, make sure your plants and decor are WELL ANCHORED as you set this tank up. It's a big PITA to re-position uprooted plants after you've filled this tank. That said, once you get it set up and going, it's such a beauty you'll be glad you got it.

Penn Plax Finding Nemo Action Aerating Resin Ornament, Treasure Chest

Penn Plax Finding Nemo Action Aerating Resin Ornament, Treasure ChestWe love it. My son is thrilled. It looks really nice in his tank and bubbles well. I don't know why it is Finding Nemo. There is nothing on the chest itself to indicate that.

The 1st one = after 2 years was too covered in black algae = tossed (this is my fault not a reflection on the product). Now that I'm smarter about the amount of time I leave my fish tank lights on, I needed to re-purchase. The 2nd one I bought was damaged in transit = effortless exchange for the one in my tank. I do like it, but be warned, the jeweled insert easily detaches = I have had to jam back down and then it stays. To be honest, I'm not using as a bubbler (I did my 1st one and it worked fine), but due to re-configuration of tank and then switching to a larger 55 gallon tank, I have a large bubble bar already and didn't want the hassle of running another air hose = I just use for decoration and I love how it looks.

It works and looks as intended. I'm not exactly sure of how it's tied in with Finding Nemo, because other than the packaging it doesn't have any Nemo charachters on it, however it's a great little fish tank decoration and it works perfectly. This was reasonably priced, which is why we ordered it, not necessarily for the movie tie-in.

LEDwholesalers High Power WHITE + BLUE LED Aquarium Reef corals grow light. 2512W+B

LEDwholesalers High Power WHITE + BLUE LED Aquarium Reef corals grow light. 2512W+BI have a 400 gallon tank. I replaced 4x400 HQI halides.Originaly I went with 4 of these lights, I now have five and may go to six. You have to place them within 4" of the waters surface and this limits thier spread. I have acros and they are doing well. As the other reviewer said they are not as intense as halides on a fixture for fixture basis however, using more fixtures gets you the same effect.

Taking into consideration the cost of a traditional halide fixture and bulb are about the same as these fixtures, the savings in electricity and maintinance on the fixtures themselves, LED is far and away a superior light to metal halide in almost every way.

I went from 1.6 killowats per hour 10 hours a day to 600 watts 10 hours a day. While that is less than half the watts, that is not where the real savings is. The real savings is in the heat, or rather how cool these lights run.

If you ever have had halides you know how hot they are.Between my chiller the A/C and running fewer watts my power bill has gone down $450.00 per month. I still need my chiller but is only runs 15 minutes an hour instead of 45 minutes an hour and keeps my tank at 77. I live in south FLA its hot all the time.

Additionally I was spending $500-600 a year keeping the system running, not including electriciy, bulbs and ballasts anually.

I have heard of people having problems with these lights and that led wholesalers is not really helpful however I have never had a failure with these. I bought mine on ebay from the same vendor for $315 including shipping.

Nice Light not as intense as the seller claims, about equal to 250 watt metal halide until you get about 8 inches below the water surface, no where near the output of a 400 watt metal halide.

I've been using two of these on my 150 gallon reef setup. They throw quite a bit of light and my corals are maintaining pretty good. 1 more light would probably be needed for good growth. The one thing I wish these had were the reflectors that gave the water a shimmering effect like the metal halides that i replaced.

I recently bought the smaller version of this light. There is no difference in this light and the one I bought other then the size

My Review is below:

This light is Dangerous & Poorly Made.

I was so excited to get 2 of these lights for my saltwater reef tank. I spent the extra money to have them overnighted.

They came today. I opened the first box and I plugged it, after a moment the fans came on and the LEDs came on. I unplugged it and set it aside

You can imagine my disappointment when I plugged in the second one and it did not work. There is no on off switch so the way you turn it on and off is you plug or unplug it.

When it did not come on after a minute, I unplugged it and plugged it back in. This time when I plugged it back in I got a shock!

When both units were unplugged I looked at them closely. Looking through the vents I noticed wires hanging down. These lights come with 3 prong plug (the third is the ground), but with close inspection you can clearly see inside the ground wire is sniped and attached to nothing.

After comparing the 2 units you can see they are put together with entirely different internal parts. The internal parts of these lights look they were cobbled together from spare parts you would find in your junk drawer.

The defective unit literally has a wall plug glued to the inside top of the unit, with a wires soldered to each prong and electrical tape wrapped around the prongs. INSIDE THE UNIT!?!?

There should be negative stars for product like this.

Avoid this unit i at all costs!

I would suggest that anyone who has one of these units, unplug it and stop using it.

I used this light for my 45 gallon bowfront reef tank for 5 months, replacing a 175w metal halide. My corals grew very well with this light and everyone in the tank seemed happy. The color is too stark for my taste compared with either metal halide (10k) or florescent lights, both of which give a more rich tone and coloration to my eye. Also this unit has very loud fans, louder than my hang-on-back skimmer. Electricity savings and less heat are positives.

Pro:

Energy efficient.

Less heating (save on chilling).

Good coral growth.

Inexpensive compared to competitors.

Con:

Color is too narrow/stark for my taste, washes out corals and fish.

Noisy fans.

Not made to be easily mounted other than by the hanging cables.

Lose shimmer effect relative to MH lights.

Bottom line: When I upgraded my tank to a 75g with overflow, I was thinking of buying a second one of these. I directly compared this LED light to the MH and florescent lights that came with the tank, and I just couldn't bring myself to use this LED fixture anymore. I'm selling it.

Fluval EDGE Algae Magnet

Fluval EDGE Algae MagnetThe built quality is nice and it's ergonomic, but if it doesn't do what it's designed to do well all of that is for not. That's the case with this magnet cleaner. Let me count the ways it doesn't work for me:

Weak magnet, if the magnet is not strong it will constantly fall off and not be effective in cleaning the glass

The string is annoying and will only lead to problems keeping it on there (I removed it on my unit after trying it on)

Just doesn't clean well mainly because it keeps falling off when swiping it across the glass (did I already say weak magnet?)

I suggest a Mag Float, that magnet is MUCH stronger and no I don't work for them or paid by them. Just letting you know what works in my two tanks. I didn't bother returning this because I already dumped the package and the price wasn't high so it wasn't worth my time to do that.

To end on a positive note, the inside surface area is larger and the outside handle is easy to hold...but like I said...it also has to work well for what it is designed for. Too bad, I wanted to like it, but can't recommend this.

this magnet is nice for cleaning but does not float so if it separates it falls to the bottom. It comes with a string to fish it out but if you have anything in your tank then it will get tangled in that. Also if you were keeping it in the tank like is suggested, the string would get pretty nasty since it is like a piece of heavy duty thread. I won't be using this at all...I will be going back to the store and getting a new one that floats

Buy Fluval EDGE Algae Magnet Now

Switched to a magfloat after having this 3 days with my edge. Works great until it hits gravel. Then you are just asking for scratches. Fortunately I knew this and switched. In the edge it's just too hard to go from edge to edge to edge over and over. Even an expert loses it to flow eventually. I have a FOWLR setup. Once it his sand *poof* it would need cleaned in the sink before being placed back in the tank. The string collects algae. It does however look great and that is why it gets 2 stars.

This will help to get some little annoying spots off of the interior of your tank, but there are too many design flaws for it to be worth the money or time to use. If you get one grain of sand caught on the cleaning surface (which you will, because it tends to fall down to the bottom of your tank, especially when rounding corners), you will proceed to scratch up the inside of your tank. The included string is perhaps the poorest quality I have ever seen. It deteriorates in water. I would say the only plus is that it is an aesthetically pleasing design, but it doesn't work. If anything it damaged my tank.

All Glass Aquarium AAG21603 Fluorescent Deluxe Hood, 35hex

All Glass Aquarium AAG21603 Fluorescent Deluxe Hood, 35hexThis is exactly what I wanted. Was easy to find and was shipped fast! The description and picture were great!

I bought this for a tank that I bought as a stand alone tank, not a kit. The hood seems to let very little water evaporate. At least the water level does not drop as much as my rectangle tank. The tank is thick enough to remain ridged yet thin enough to cut extra holes in. I have 2 hoses, a heater, and a hang on the back filter. Another plus is that it does not allow the water that does evaporate collect on the light.

I would buy this hood again.

Advertised that hood will fit almost all 35 gallon hexagon aquariums. This was far from true. Hood was many inches too large.

Tetra Whisper Air Pump

Tetra 77850 Whisper Air Pump, upto 100-GallonI bought a 5 gallon air pump for more than this, and that air pump failed to pump air through 2 2.5gal tanks. So, I went to the overkill side and purchased this. First, though, I want to address some of the other reviews.

NO air pump, I repeat, NO AIR PUMP IS SILENT. If a manufacturer tries to sell you a silent air pump, you need to step back and assess if their project development team has taken remedial physics. Vibrations create sound, which means no silent vibrating air pump diaphragms. According to classical physics, it is physically impossible for that to happen. However, through sound damping and clever material choice, you can make it so that it's close to silent. You'll never actually get there, but you can make it quiet enough to not be heard over the usual white noise of the home.

This air pump is the quietest I've ever gotten my hands on. I live in a building with a constant low level of background noise, and I have to concentrate to pick the pump's quiet hum out. It's well constructed, the rubber feet do a lot in the way of damping sound, and if you have it in a bedroom, wrapping it with a towel makes it practically inaudible. Otherwise, it's a very well built and well functioning pump for its price. You will never find anything as good quality as this and for as low a price as this; I can guarantee it from weeks of searching online.

Pump is whisper quiet. Comes with an inline check valve to adjust the level of output. Works great. Does not come with any hose, or with any tfitings, so these will need to be purchased seperately.

I have this setup on a 20 gallon tall aquarium. It also goes to a standard 10 gallon via a 2-way gang valve. So in essence it would be like connecting two 'bubble' devices up (think air stone plus bubbling treasure chest decoration as an example). The gang valve allows me to compensate for the 10 gallon not being as deep as the 20 gallon. For those interested, it is running a sponge filter in both tanks.

With this set up, it is barely able to keep headway and only produces a minimal amount of bubbles. This is okay for me, since I run fully planted tanks and only need minimal water flow for temp and nutrient distribution. If I was doing two devices in the 20 gallon alone though, I'm not sure it would be powerful enough.

How big of a pump do you need? It's all about depth and has nothing to do with volume ... which is how they are foolishly marketed. It should be clear that a pump will work much better on a 20 gallon long tank than it will on a 20 gallon tall tank due solely to the depth of the water even though they have the same volume.

My biggest complain with this air pump is it isn't quite. It's about the same level of noise that a cheap HOB filter makes while good HOB filters will be far quieter than this thing. It's a constant hum that you can get use to, but will always be there and add to the `background' noise of your house. The best I could compare it to is the kind of noise a refrigerator makes when it is on.

This pump is better than several cheaper ones we've tried, though it does have a larger footprint. Rubber feet are excellent.

I had my doubts about purchasing an air pump for my 16 gallon bow front aquarium. My filter is very quiet and I didn't want to add the additional noise of an air pump, but I wanted to add some circulation to my tank. I was pleasantly surprised with the Whisper air pump. It basically only added a low hum to my tank set up. Very happy. Works great.

Fluval FX5 Fine Filter Polishing Pad - 3-Pack

Fluval FX5 Fine Filter Polishing Pad - 3-PackI've found the white polishing pad to be more commonly available locally, but have read various reports of those clogging up very quickly, a few days.

I have my FX5 in a 120G tank w/ 2 RES turtles, and about 30 small fish. It's doing the job VERY well, and I find that one of these blue pads above the BioMax is keeping the water clean, and catching plenty of fine material w/o clogging up TOO quickly. I'm replacing it about monthly, but given the stocking level of my tank, and the fact that there's TURTLES, I'm MORE than pleased with these!

Works great for my fx5. Never had any issues. Have been using these since I've had my filter.

I would reccomend this to any one.

I know the directions say to put these on the bottom basket, I found they clog in about a week if you put them there. I have a 240g with 25 2"-4" community fish, a pleco and a fire eel. Three won't fill the basket as they are meant to be used with the water pads. I notice some people try putting one over a bio basket, another or floss, etc. and get the same filtration with less clogging. You'll know when it clogs because your flow goes to nothing. The best results I've had is with floss only on the top basket , bio (Fluval brand) on the bottom two baskets. And maybe this is wrong to do but it works.

These work wonderfully in the Fluval FX5 a long time ehiem fan for over 35 years I've been using these filters for larger tanks (up to 300 gal.) in pairs and they're incredibly effective especially for messy fish. Of course, nothing "polishes" the water like a Vortex Diatom Filter which can filter out debris and pathogens down to one micron in size but these are supplementary filters meant only to be used once in a while.

These pads although not as effective will remove particles down to about 10 microns. I run four FX5's and replace these about every 60 days. Like the white foam which is for coarser debris it's imperative to replace them or your GPH will suffer and the re direction of water flow not being able to pass through can result in ahigher degree of bypass an inherant problem with the FX5's in general.

These do keep your water on the pristine side and the value on Amazon is excellent.

Fish Mate 1000PUV Pressurized UV+Bio Pond Filter

Fish Mate 1000PUV Pressurized UV+Bio Pond FilterI installed this filter in my 800 gallon pond and my water literally went from pea soup to crystal clear in 7 days! I was amazed at how clear it got the water. Super easy to install and hide so its not visible when looking at the pond. I would definitely recommend this for an inexpensive way to keep clear water. The only thing is they should mention you NEED TO BUY A PUMP as well. Fortunately I read that on someone elses review and purchased one with it, but would have been pissed if I found out and then had to wait another week for my pump to arrive. Overall, great product, would highly recommend.

I purchased two Fish Mate 1000 P (non UV) filters in 2006 for our two backyard 250 gallon koi ponds and they have been barely adequate. I also purchased two Pondlife Turbo-Twist 9 Watt Pond UV Clarifiers for controlling nuisance green algae. I also use a Danner Pondmaster PM1000 pre-filter on each pond and Danner Pondmaster Model 7 700 gph pump on each pond.

The molded plastic ports are thinly cast and prone to distortion from required hose clamps which eventually causes associated weakening and breakage. I contacted the manufacturer, Ani Mate, to obtain a new top cover and I was informed that the non-UV model is no longer supported and no replacement lid is available. I then ordered a Becket 7109810 750-Gallon Pressure Filter from amazon and to my surprise it readily rendered the afflicted pond to crystal clear clarity within two days!

It appears that perhaps Beckett's selection and use of 'Bio Balls' is superior to that of Pet Mate's use of volcanic lava-like rocks as a biological support medium. Regardless, I'm now definitely pleased.

This unit did not control the alge buildup. I don,t know if the inside filters were inadequate or if the UV bulb needed to be stronger.

I have a three year, 300 gallon stock tank pond. It's never had filtration of any kind. It has been pea soup for three summers. It gets full west texas sun, and is moderately stocked. The filter has cleared visibility to the bottom in 4 days. I'm totally impressed. No buyers remorse. When this one quits, I'll probably order another.

ProClear Aqautics Premier 200 Wet Dry Filter with Prefilter

ProClear Aqautics Premier 200 Wet Dry Filter with PrefilterWell worth the investment.

If you have 100+ gallon tank and you want it clean and clear without spending hours per week on tank maintaince get this filter (and an additional pump of course, i use the 'marineland 5500').

Setup is easier than you think, once its up and running upkeep is pretty simple and comparatively infrequent.

The only con is the noise, on a scale of 1 to 10 (10= loud 1= silent) I would rate the noise at a 4 to maybe a 5. For comparison I would rate the marinland 350 bio-wheel filter at a 3 and a half.

I've been running one of these filters on my 120 gallon freshwater tank for about the last four and a half years. It's performed flawlessly and it keeps the water very nice. Maintenance is easy and it can be performed in a few minutes without having to get inside of the tank or filter. I just use a bucket and pull out the pad and sponge from the filter and the two foam cylinders from the overflow boxes, wash them out in cool water and re-install.

I'm using a 900 gallon an hour rated Rio pump with this setup. Getting it set up and going is quite easy and getting the siphon tubes running and the water level set where you want it to be in the tank is about the toughest part.

My filter doesn't seem to be excessively noisy but it's also mounted inside of a closed cabinet under the tank so that probably helps quite a bit.

Oceanic 82105 BioCube Original Replacement Filter Cartridges, 2-Pack

Oceanic 82105 BioCube Original Replacement Filter Cartridges, 2-PackMy aquarium eats one of these about every ten days. You can rinse/shake it out in a sink or bowl full of water drained from the aquarium but the cleaned filter will only last 3-4 days before clogging again. Couple of things to be aware of...a large part of your aquariums ability to remove waste revolves around beneficial bacteria growing in your filter. When you take the filter out, you remove a lot of organic waste from the ecosystem but you may also remove a lot of the bacteria that are clinging to the filter.

As such, when replacing the filter do not clean any other part of the filter assembly. Do that a week after changing the filter.

I also do keep the last "full" filter and after rinsing in drained water I tuck it on top of the filter mechanism under the door so it stays damp. When I do a water change I use that filter for a few hours after the change to catch all the junk that gets knocked loose in the water, then toss it and use a new one.

I've found that peeling a layer of the gauze medium back once it is clogged greatly extends the useful life.

I'll continue to buy these.

Current USA Satellite Freshwater LED Plus Light for Aquarium

Current USA Satellite Freshwater LED Plus Light for Aquarium, 36 to 48-InchThe only thing missing from these lights is being able to set the lights to change a certain times of the day. For example if you could set them to sunrise in the morning and dawn, and changing to night time with as night falls in my time zone. Other than that my fish seem to love the lighting effects.

I just got this fixture fkr my 100 gallon 60 inch long X 20 deep tank. I was a little worried that this light would not be enough for my tank since the fixture is only 48 inches long. Fortunately it is just right! I currently have the light sitting directly on top of the tank and it lights up the whole tank just fine (no dark sides).

The light is surprisingly thin and not very wide either. Much smaller than the compact fluorescent it replaced.

The extension arms a a little flimsy when fully extended an do not keep the light from touching the top of the tank, so I have the arms extended about halfway. Eventually I will put this in a canopy.

Despite being LED the fixture does get warm, but not nearly as hot as my compact fluorescent which required a fan.

The best feature is the different lighting schemes you can use via the wireless remote. Moat of the color changing effects are nice and subtle, and I am currently using the "cloud cover" mode which simulates a partially cloudy day. The lighting mode is cool, but I can't imagine using it too often.

About the only thing missing would be a timer or some programmable features that would automatically take the light from sun rise to full sun to sunset and to night. It would be the perfect light then.

As far as growing plant, I don't have much experience with that, but would guess that it's not bright enough for my particular setup, but wouls probably work for a shallower tank, maybe 16 inches or so?

Bottom line, for this price point and functionality, I think this is the best LED fixture on the market right now.

SeaClear Eclipse 3 Compatible Aquarium

SeaClear Eclipse 3 Compatible AquariumSave yourself some annoyance...what they need to say is that you will constantly have water dripping down the sides of your tank due to condensation build up under the Eclipse Hood. Normally that is not a big deal, but since the Eclipse does not seat very well on top it allows for constant dripping.

Marineland will question how long you have had your tank lights on, but since its the same as when I had a glass tank that should not be a big deal.
