Aqueon 06092 Water Flow Control Valve Assembly

This flow valve seems to be of a very good quality, except for the plastic faucet adapter piece (for indoor faucets), which will not withstand frequent use. This is not a problem for me, since I connect the flow valve to a standard outdoor/garden faucet. If you will need the adapter, do yourself a favor and get a brass adapter at your local hardware store (couple of bucks).

The flow valve connects itself to a faucet and uses the power of the water flow to produce a suction effect. It comes ready for you to connect your own flexible vinyl tubing (bring the flow valve to your local hardware store to make sure that you buy the correct diameter tubing). Connect your gravel filter to the other end of the vinyl tube and you have made a complete water changer. A "ball" valve just before the gravel filter needed for you to control suction and water flow (you will also use this device to supply water back to your aquarium). Complete water changers from Aqueon or Python run for $35 $45 depending on the length of the tubing.

Unlike the Python flow valve, where you have to rotate the bottom part to switch between draining and filling modes, the Aqueon flow valve has a lever (switch) that you need to move. I like the mechanism of the Aqueon flow valve better. Let's see which one lasts longer.

Unscrewing the bottom (drainage) piece reveals another connector for vinyl tubing. I suppose that it is possible to connect a draining tube for those like me that do not want to leave dirty fish water on the garage floor. The problem is that the pressure cap needed to complete this setting is missing. I called Aqueon and the technical support person that took my call could not confirm if it was possible to connect the drain tube and told me that the cap needed (identical to the one provided for the tube that goes to the gravel filter and to the aquarium) is not sold separately. That means that I would have to buy another complete flow valve, just for the cap, to complete my setting! --If someone has a better idea that can help me ideal my setting, please let me know.

The first control valve I bought came with the hose. It lasted me lass than a year and cracked right at the top where you screw it onto your kitchen sink. The replacement I bought in July lasted me exactly TWO tank cleanings. It cracked in the same spot while hand-tightening onto my faucet. I was very angry and wrote to Customer Service on the Aqueon website. They responded promptly and once the got a copy of my Amazon order summary, mailed me a new valve. They have a lifetime warranty so if it cracks again, I know what to do. Very pleased that Aqueon stand behind their product!

Even though this is a replacement piece, it is a replacement piece for a reason. This part will break often so long as it is made of plastic and has threads. This is my 3rd one in the two years I have owned the kit. I love the kit, but having it break is just time consuming.

I have been very gentle when screwing the adapter onto my faucet, yet last week when I got it out to change the water, the adapter had cracked into two pieces. I contacted Aqueon customer service via their website, and asked if they had a warranty to replace the adapter. They promptly mailed me a new adapter for free. I think they should change the construction of the adapter to be better quality, but their customer service is excellent.

The water changer idea and principle is wonderful. However, due to poor quality in the materials, this piece continually breaks. No matter how carefully I handle it, I end up having to buy a new one several times a year. I would be willing to pay more for better quality and less breakage. Every time it breaks and I have to buy a new one, I have to wait several days for delivery, and therefore several days to clean the tank.

Quiet One Lifegard Aquarium Pump, 296-Gallon Per Hour

I have been a manager for a retail petstore for 15 yrs. I have extensive knowledge in aquatic life. Our store has purchased these pumps for commercial use as well as for customer purchase. We will no longer carry lifeguard products due to the lack of quality and lack of customer service. These quiet one pumps are made with plastic shafts instead of stainless steel shafts. When you have a power outage and then the power surge kicks back on the shaft cracks.When you call lifeguard they refuse to correct the problem and tell you to send it back at your own cost. A man named Neil works there and will not even consider any type of compensation for these pumps and also will not hesitate to hang up on you.These pumps will not last you more than a year the shafts will crack.I know because i have many upset customers with these pumps. Be aware that you may give this good ratings when first purchased but you will not be happy in the long run.

Worked great for my reef. It was used as the sump pump for 1 year with no problems. I took it apart a few times to clean it. It kept itself pretty clean and never clogged. It also started right up for a few power failures we had during the year. It was used in a 20g sump/refugium underneath a 29g display, with hang on back overflow. This was perfect for the filtration flow I was looking for in the sump (filter sock, baffles, low flow refugium and roughly 4 feet of head pressure). In the display I still had a little flow from a powerhead and BakPak2 skimmer. I've upgraded (but downsized) to a nanocube. If I ever get a large tank again, I will definitely get another one of these pumps.

I have owned two of these model pumps and both have died for no apparent reason. I use them to pump water during water changes and they are not on consistently, each time they died after about 3 months of intermittent use. When plugged in they make no noises or attempts to turn. Maybe they work well for people who use them in a different way, but for me personally I'm going to steer clear of Quiet Ones in the future.

Either I got a defective unit or the description of it's performance is misleading. I wanted to use it as a replacement pump in a fountain. It's described as 6.1' max head height and 296 gph. My fountain is about 4 feet high and uses 1/2 diameter tubing. No water came out the top. Placed the pump in a pail of water fully submerged and had it set to max flow. It only pumped water to a height of about 6 inches. On the Lifegard website more detailed information is given and it says it pumps a max of 175 gph at a height of 4 feet. So I'm unsure what the issue it is, but it fell woefully short of the performance described by the manufacturer and interpreted by me.

On a datasheet on their website another set of figures is given for the 1200. It must be flow rates with head heights converted from metric because feet are listed with fractions of a ft. In any case it says flow rate of 0 (zero) gph at 6.1 ft. That's a lot different than what's printed on the box! But that I can believe, zero gallons at 6.1 feet.

Azoo Mignon Filter 150 Power Filter

I've been running the Azoo Mignon filter in my fish tank for about two months now and it runs like a champ. It is very quiet (unless the water level in the tank drops, and then I just need to refresh the water levels--no fault of the filter) and seems to do a very good job keeping the tank clean. I have been using it on a smaller 5-gallon tank and I turned the flow down some so the water isn't so turbulent. My goldfish (the only occupant in my tank) seems to like it and I see him hanging out occasionally around the spillway--he seems to like the slight briskness of the flow. I would highly recommend it. I'm sure it would do a fine job in a larger tank too.

I bought this filter from Amazon as an upgrade to the Azoo Mignon 60 I used to cycle my aquarium.

I have a small 5.5 gallon aquarium with live plants, driftwood, and Flourite substrate. Tank inhabitants are a single male betta, 2 apple snails, an algae eater and 5 glass shrimp. This filter is very small, but does a great job cycling the water enough to keep the tank nice and clear. I felt the original Azoo Mignon 60 was right at its limit in how much water it could turn over in a 5.5 gallon tank.

The only modifications I made to this new Azoo 150 were to remove the sponge and carbon it came with and replace them with BioMax and AquaClear foam inserts (both available through Amazon). I dropped a small mesh bag with about 12 biomax pellets and cut the new AquaClear foam insert to fit tightly into the top portion of the tank. The AquaClear (sponge) is taller than the flow of water (if that makes sense). So that all water that comes through the filter passes through the sponge and the biomax at the bottom cultures my healthy bacteria.

The filter is very quiet and has an easily adjusted flow knob so that I can turn the flow down when feeding and back up after and even to full blast if I have disturbed the substrate when moving plants around. I think it is an incredible deal for the price. I was also really impressed with how small it is. I wanted to make sure that whatever power filter I used didn't look like a monster hanging off the back of a small 5.5 gallon tank.

Overall it does the job, looks really nice and is cheap enough to buy a replacement if needed.

I bought this little filter in my local fish store for my 5.5 gallon Aqueon tank.

The carbon filtration seems to work perfectly. I installed it right after a week long Melafix treatment for one of my guppies (this is my nursery/hospital tank) so the water was very cloudy. In 12 hours, there was a substantial change in the cloudiness. In 24 hours, the water was nearly clear. By 48 hours, the tank was sparkling clean. This works perfectly for a 5.5 gallon tank.

Now for the chemical filtration, included in the package is one set of the carbon filter cartridge, and a thin black sponge "for mechanical filtration." Indeed the media in the thin black sponge was thin and spacious; there is less surface area in the sponge than optimal. Afraid that I did not have enough surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow on (truly not an issue), I purchased a pack of replacement sponges for the Azoo Mignon 60 and used the "bio-filter" (aka dense sponge for bacteria to coat) and placed it into the Mignon 150. The sponge is obviously smaller than intended, but all intents and purposes, it works.

The filter does have an adjustable flow knob at the top of the intake. Contrary to the functionality of even the "top brands" of filters, this knob does make a significant difference in the flow. Also, this feature is not commonly found on smaller models of power filters. This makes it useful for tanks housing fry who can't fight current or may be sucked into the filter.

All I have to say about the noise level is that it is virtually silent. If the water gets too low in the tank, of course, the out-flow will make noise, but that's not an issue of the filter.

This was an affordable and fully functional power filter. It is worth every cent. The extra media that I put into the filter is not necessary. I would not advise this filter for anything larger than the tank I have, however.

Maybe I was just ignorant when I purchased this, but just a warning to those that may not know; This does not come with the T5 HO lighting. You need to order it separately, and it seems that the only size that will fit (22" bulb) is only sold via Zoomed. I just ordered the bulbs so I cant really give this a review as far as the quality goes, but I just wanted people to be aware.

Its a great product, my plants were starving for light from the old light fixture. My tank is a 30gallon tank that came in a package that is sold at petstores and wal mart. Its very bright, only down side is that it does not sit flush with the top of the tank, which is good for tanks that have large aquatic plants that can grow above the water level but bad for fish that jump. Also, because it does not sit flush with the top of the tank light does escape out the front and back. But you just can't have a thriving plant tank with out proper lights and this light goes beyond expectations. The two light bulbs I used have 5,000k and 6,500k output and it has made a major difference in my plant growth.

The mounting brackets slide into the light fixture for a secure mount, so it wont slide and drop into the tank. The kit comes with (2) 4ft wire cords to screw into the top of the tank so you can hang it from the ceiling if you need more space for larger plants. The two light bulbs have independant on/off switch's but only one 3ft power cord. It keeps your timer from getting cluttered with two many power cords. You will need an extention cord if your outlet is farther that 3ft away from you light or your tank is up higher than mine..

The platic bulb cover slides out one side of the fixture to install light bulbs. There is a thin plastic wrapping on the glass from packaging, remove this film. It is very easy to clean, since the entire fixture is mounted on hinges.

From end to end the entire fixture is 32 inches wide and the mounting brackets can be positioned anywhere under the fixture, so this light will secure to any size tank 32inches wide or less.

Inside where the bulbs go, there is a reflector for maximum light exposure to the tank. The bulbs and reflector are protected by the clear plastic cover, so dust and algea can not reach them.

Can't beat the price or quality of this product. 5 stars...

I bought one of these lights locally. Its great. Provides plenty of light, and even has hinges on the brackets allowing you to easily flip up the fixture for maintenance and cleaning. The brackets are also adjustable, so you don't need them at the end, or use them at all. At nearly half the price of the GLO lighting, I feel this is a better deal. I am currently planning to buy more for my other tanks. I would defiantly recommended these lights for a cheaper (and just as durable) option for many of the T5 lighting available. If this is Zoo Meds entry into the aquarium market, they are off to a great start!

I purchased this light fixture from amazon (does not include t5's) along with a couple light bulbs with it. Looks great on my 29gal but had to remove my glass cover... which i broke in the process anyway, because the mounting hardware that comes with it required me to. No big deal, I just have my tank open to air. The light can tilt up thanks to the hinged mounting hardware which is convenient. The light seems rugged and includes suspension hardware, and the aluminum reflector is quite excellent compared to my old fixture's skimpy reflector. The only dislike I have is that the cord length is only like 4 feet which isnt a big deal either if you have plugs available and your aquarium isnt on a skyscraper (my dresser). Great product, no problems, no complaints no improvement suggestions... except maybe different mounting options. None the less 5 stars.

I ordered these brushes in the hope that they would effectively clean the bottom of my Marina S-20 aquarium filter. I love this filter, but it is really difficult to clean. Since the brush set comes from the same company, I thought these brushes could hold the secret to a sparkling clean filter. But, no such luck. The stems are too flexible and the bristles cover the sides of the stem, but don't extend around the bottom. So when trying to brush out the bottom of the filter, it is the base of the stem that hits the plastic instead of bristles. However, the smaller brushes are great for cleaning out tubes and the pump, which is why I am giving the set 4 stars.

i purchased 3 bulbs becuase they are the cheapest heat lamp bulb i can find on amazon. all 3 of them last less than 2 weeks each. not worth the money!!!!!!

We use this Heat Light bulb in are heat lamp and have it hanging over are large bird cage. My Birds kept getting sick so the vet told us about a heat lamp and bulb. I got one and I have been using to for 3 months now and my birds are now healthy and happy. IT keeps the cage around 80 degrees. This bulb in conjunction with a large fixture helps us keep our 50 gal terrarium warm night and day. The black light is very nice, as our house had become a little flooded with red light at night (using regular night bulbs).

The one thing that I'm not blown away by is the bulb life, this bulb only lasted about 2000 hours.

Aquatop Aquarium Submersible Pump

As Austin mentioned, the adapters included do not match the pictures for the product. To complicate matters, there are no instructions on how to set it up (just maintain it and warning information).

It turns out the tubing included is not actually for the output of the pump, but is intended to be used to mix air into the water flow.

I got the following response from the manufacturer:

"Unfortunately, the additional accessories shown in the 4th and 5th pictures are not included with this unit and were uploaded in error. We apologize for the mis-information. However, the airline tubing can be attached to the NP-80 as an optional "Venturi Line" feature. To use this optional feature, first remove the output attachment on the NP-80 and replace it with the T-Adapter attachment. Then attach the airline tubing to the T-Adapter extension which should be pointed up. The other end of the airline (with the air flow adjustment valve) should be placed outside of you tank so that in can draw in air to mix with the water output. The T-Adapter output should remain open so that the water/air mixture can flow into your aquarium water. Hope that helps!"

I got this for a homemade sous-vide cooker and am happy with its performance except one thing: when the water level drops below the level of the intake, it apparently burns out. And I managed to drop the water level by taking a piece of meat out of the cooker. So if this is your application, make sure to turn the pump off before doing anything that will drop the water level.

Okay pump strength, the adjustable flow knob can stick easily. Small water pump that does the job. Small, very quiet, pushes water well, but it has a hard time pushing against gravity (upwards).

Malaysian Driftwood

I read up on driftwood before ordering one myself. I have a cycled 30 gallon hex aquarium with more that a dozen schooling tetras and a colony of about 20 cherry shrimp. I wanted to upgrade with driftwood; to make the tank look more natural and have a hidding place for baby shrimp. I cured it in a bucket of warm water for 4 days, it leached out quite a bite of tannins. The first day, the water turned dark brown, then the second less, and so forth. I srubbed it and rinced after the fourth day, attatched moss and java ferns and in the tank it went. The piece is random, whatever they send you, I got a nice curved piece with holes in it. I like it a lot and it looks great in my aquarium. The day after in the tank shrimp were already coming out of it and grazing the surface. Also, for size it it perfect for a 10 gallon or 20 gallon hex tank.

I wasn't sure about buying driftwood without seeing it, but I got a nice piece with a unique shape. It is good size and perfect for my fish tank. I boiled it 3 times before putting it in the tank and it still tinted the aquarium water, so just make sure you thoroughly soak it/boil it before adding it to the tank. Overall great deal, can't get that price at the pet store!

Hi, When I purchased this I was afraid I would get a piece of driftwood that I didn't like. After reading a couple reviews I decided to just purchase one since I couldn't find any around my area, they were either fake or overpriced.

When it arrived boy was I happy, I was hoping for a sort of L shaped driftwood that would provide shelter for my fish and I got exactly what I wanted. I was quite surprised at how lucky I was. I purchased the small one and it measured out to be about 11 inches and looks beautiful in my 10 Gallon tank. The driftwood itself is very beautiful and has a brown/tan color to it.

It is real driftwood so you have to boil/soak it before you put it in the tank or else it will tint your water brown. I soaked mines in hot water for 1 full week and it leached quite a bit of tannin. Even when I put it in my tank it leached a little and tinted my water but it wasn't as bad. The tannins actually lowered my pH which is good for my fish and the slightly brown tint looked great in my tank.

The driftwood looks so good in my tank I want another piece! The shape was not what I expected. It's a bit like a stump with a long thin piece sticking out. I don't mind, it just isn't want I thought of. Anyway, it's in the tank. I boiled it once for about 15 mins. After 24 hours in tank there is no discoloration to the water. I like the way it looks. If it helps, I uploaded a picture that should be available with the product image. I want another piece but I want one that is more of a tunnel for my Pleco to hide in.

I thought this product was going to be too small for my tank. However this piece was perfect, after soaking it for a day, my water was crystal clear and it added a nice center piece to my 20 gallon aquarium.

Cascade® Internal Submersible Filters for Aquariums - UL Listed

The Cascade 300 inline filter is a good cheap filter for a five or 10 gallon tank that requires a slow to medium current (I use it in 5gal betta tanks) but I would not recommend it in anything bigger as any bio-load over 'light' would overwhelm it.

It has a bio-sponge section and a "Disposable Carbon filter Cartridge" that they want you to buy in packs. I pried open the cartridge it came with to find low grade carbon pellets so I replaced them with Marineland Black Diamond Premium and it works even better now.

I use two Cascade 600 filters in my 55 gallon aquatic Xenopus (African Clawed Frog) tank. As they like to hang at the surface of the water, mate, and eat without getting blown around by a high current, they are happy with the fact that the flow rate is low because I can turn the outlet away from the center of the tank and into the back tank wall. Because they like to excrete that which they consume in large amounts, I am happy that their tank is kept clean between water changes. For larger amphibian tanks, these filters are quite effective AND low in price. More effective in a larger tank than Duetto internal filters. I have Duetto filters in smaller 10-20 gallon tanks for amphibians and find that the Cascade filters are better for larger tanks. You can use the nozzle shown on the box picture or you can use a bar that is included with the filter. They are big, bulky filters that take up space in the tank, but this is the downside of filtration that has low currents. I can not testify as to longevity of the item, but I have been willing to risk the purchase as for the time being we are all very happy. Buy if you want good filtration with a low flow rate at a good price.

I have a red eared slider turtle and his home is a 55 gallon tank. He makes quite a mess in his home and I have gone through at least 4-5 different filters in the 2+ years that I have had him. I've tried the external filters that sound like a constant waterfall only to have it short out. So then I decided to look at submersible filters and went through about 2 of those before I found this. At first I was frustrated because the water started to turn green and it was as though it wasn't working. Miraculously one morning I woke up and the water was crystal clear and has been since then. It's quiet and Homer LOVES to float in front of the water being pushed out. He puts his little head in his shell and let's the water just shoot over top of his shell.

To sum it up it's powerful, quiet and Homer loves the water coming out of the filter. I would absolutely recommend this!!!!!!

I've been using it within the frame of a week now and so far it's doing great. It's more than powerful enough to clear out my 55 gallon tank. I'm going to have to buy a longer air-hose for it so I can put it at the bottom of my tank, but that is cheap and easy to do. Other than that it seems to be the best water pump that I've ever used.

I got this filter for my 10 gallon Amazon River species tank. To start off with, I think Penn-Plax (maker of cascade products) really deserves more recognition. Their stuff has been compared to higher end brands like Fluval and Aquaclear. Like the Aquaclear you can put what ever media you want inside the compartment. You can hook the nozzle up to the provided airline tube (does not need air pump) so it can draw in air and spray out bubbles. Another option is to use the spray bar that comes with it. Since it draws the water straight through the media as a canister filter would, it is A LOT more efficient, allowing it to have a lower GPH. I also like that the pump comes AFTER the media, making sand and other abrasive particles less likely to damage the impeller. It can be fully submerged, and oriented sideways and still operate. You can also attach a tube to it allowing it to be used as a filter pump in a vivarium. It has an adjustable flow, which is a really useful feature. I really like this product and would recommend it to someone on a tighter budget. If you are searching for a filter for your first tank and can't afford a tetra, Aquaclear, and other higher end filters, I would really recommend this, in fact, I would still recommend this even if your not on a tight budget. If you are setting up your first tank I pray it goes well and remember to cycle!!!

Started my first salt water tank with this product. After 2 days the sand settled and cleared. After testing the water and finding the ammonia, nitrates and nitrites at "zero level," I turned on the filters, skimmers and heater and added fish once the water temperature was at 77F. It was easy and I would definitely purchase and use this product again! I would definitely recommend this product to people new to marine reef/fish keeping.
