Underwater Galleries AUG7211 Island Stonehead

Underwater Galleries AUG7211 Island StoneheadThe only reason I bought this is I saw it in a picture on a tank box at a local box store and thought it came in it. When I opened it, no Dumb Dumb. (If you are wondering why I am saying that, watch Night at the Museum. My son's loved that movie so when I saw this, I knew he would want it.) So came on Amazon to find one and success! The price is so,so but it seems to be very well made and looks nice and the look on my son's face was priceless.

There is an opening in the back and base, which is nice for fish to hide and water to drain for removal. I thought we would have to anchor it down because it didn't feel heavy enough but we just smooshed it down in the gravel a bit and he was good to go. Now Dumb Dumb is in place and ready to have some company.

The one I got is not blue as it looked in the picture, but other than that it looks the same. I did not know what size it would be, since there was no definite indication in the description, unless I missed that. It turned out to be the size I thought it might be, though. which is about 3" by 6". I used it in my two gallon turtle bowl (which is supposed to be a fish bowl). It's tall enough that the turtle can use it as a dry land 'sunning' spot.

The cave/hole that this thing has was up high (behind the eyes of the head) and very small. You'd have to have tiny fish to fit through. It looks good, but not at all what I was hoping for.

Aqueon AQE06148 Betta Divider for Aquarium

Aqueon AQE06148 Betta Divider for AquariumYou might as well let the bettas share the tank because they either hop over the divider or slip right past it near the top when're the glass bows because the divider is not even close to snug fit! I fished the bettas back and forth six times in the first three hours after I set this up! I finally had to jam cut strips of filter pads in the gaps between the walls and the edge of the divider so it sealed the edges...also laid a fish net acreen across the top to stop the jumping over...then, I could go to bed! Maybe of the divide was more solid they wouldn't be so tempted. It's too bad...Cute set up with decent room for the fish. But, tomorrow I have to go buy a better set up! Great idea Aqueon... Now make it work!

Divider served its purpose. TWo male beta; one blue, one red. Great as a starter. would get it again. Wow

I hate to make things worse for the seller here, but I can tell just by the appearance of this thing that its not really sufficient to separate two bettas. I tried to keep 2 in a tank with a divider just like this, they were easily able to see each other through it and nipped at each other through the holes. A good divider is one that doesn't let the bettas see each other at all.

Perfecto Fluorescent Oak Hexagon Hood 14Gal

Perfecto Fluorescent Oak Hexagon Hood 14GalI had to buy a replacement hood for my very old hexagon aquarium and this is the perfect replacement. My aquarium is around 30 years old and made out of heavy glass. It's very pretty. My best friend's sleeve unknowingly got caught on the original hood, pulling it off the aquarium and crashing it onto the floor and shattering it. I was so pleased when I finally found this perfect replacement! The fit and the color are a perfect match to my aquarium! I LOVE IT!!

Lee's Protein Skimmer Counter Current, Medium

Lee's Protein Skimmer Counter Current, MediumDo not let the bad reviews fool you. Protein skimmers are not electronics gadgets or any advance technology, so why are the average skimmers on the market running for about 80-100 dollars? I read a few reviews about Lee's protein skimmer and the results were mixed. I nervously decided to give it a shot and when I received the product from "petsolutions" I realized the poor quality of the product. The piping and tubing does not fit tightly so it takes a while to get it right. I ran one aerator and split it into two lines but realized after a day that the skimmer did not produce anything. Then I experimented around and surprisingly I began to have bacterial/junk products in the collection cup.

HERE IS the SECRET-

your going to need to buy two aerators-

1) for the current going down

1) for the Lee's wooden bubbler

Then your going to need to turn on the down current line first and let that run for about a minute to create a down current.

Then you turn on the wooden bubbler line and create an upward current.

This will basically cause the downward current to meet with the upward "air pockets/bubbles" to meet and any molecules will be trapped within the aure bubbles and rise to the top of the canister and into the collection cup.

It will definetly take a few tries but BOTTOM LINE THE PRODUCT DOES SKIM!!

I have a 30 gallon tank with 2 clowns, 1 spiny box, 3 anemones and the only running on a hang on filter with the skimmer and my water quality is crystal clear.

I took a stupid risk with the skimmer and I actually got it to work and I hope the best of luck for others.

I was a little hesitant about buying it because there were mixed reviews about the item. It is easy to setup and once you follow the directions ON THE BOX it will remove the toxins from your water. I had it running for about 3 hours after receiving it and there was already brown mucky skimmate in the collection cup. The trick is to have the downflow on first before turning on the airstone so the bubbles mix more with the water. Also there is a line telling you where the bubbles are supposed to be, and where the water level is supposed to be. I highly recommend this product.

Very easy to set up, started working for me almost immediately, need to order a separate air pump, I only use one pump (Tetra whisper for 40 gal) for my Lees skimmer and it works great. Simple technology with almost no moving parts to worry about breaking. Would definitely recommend for a starter skimmer. I have it in a 45 gal tank and it does great!

Pieces are loosely assembled and took some effort to get the skimmer properly placed in tank since pieces did not fit tightly.

However, once in place in the tank and after some tinkering to get the bubble flow set properly the skimmer does a great job extracting waste from my salt tank. A good option for a low price

Top Fin Power Filters and Filtration Cartridges

Top Fin Power Filters and Filtration CartridgesIt is simple to use and the current flow allows air to circulate in the water. There is nothing special except it came with my tank.

Pros:

The filter does a good job at cleaning my 10 gallon aquarium and I have over 30 fish including my fry.

The filter pads are inexpensive

Cons:

Noise might be too high.

Lasted me for about 4 years. (It might be user error since the motor runs but it is not sucking up water).

ADA Aquarium Fish Tank Submersible LED Display Digital Thermometer

ADA Aquarium Fish Tank Submersible LED Display Digital ThermometerLEDS on face already burned out. Would not order again. Looks like poor manufacturing. Had high hopes for this new product.

I decided to go with this thermometer because I got tired of the battery operated one. This was a cheap and bright powered option. I took a chance on it since it was not reviewed and was really cheap. It does ship from China, so it takes a while, but for me it was worth the wait and worked perfectly for both of my aquariums. It does only display Celsius, but that is not a big deal to me.

Algae Magnet Cleaner

Algae Magnet CleanerI'm not sure what the deal is but when I used this the first time, it scratched the heck out of my tank. The scratches are tiny but definitely disrupts the finish on the tank. It does do a good job of cleaning the walls though. I think if I put some cheese cloth or something between the outside piece and the tank it would help with the scratches.

I bought this, used it as specified, and it left tiny acratches ALL over the inside of my aquarium. BUY A DIFFERENT CLEANER! This one will destroy your aquarium!

I've sunk a small fortune in my Biorb, but now it looks like crap because I used this magnet. I was really careful, too, but somehow I picked up a tiny fragment of the lava rock that comes with the Biorb, and it etched deep grooves inside the tank. These gauges cannot be repaired. I'm sick about this. If you feel the need to use this algae cleaner, perhaps place a Biorb cleaning cloth between the magnet and the acrylic tank.

I was not very impressed with this algae cleaner. It looks great, almost a piece of artwork, but the edges don't really do a decent job of scraping the algae off the sides. The edging needs to be sharper to work.

Laguna Pond Float Valve

Laguna Pond Float ValveI like the simple design of this float valve. Found it relatively easy to set up on our pond. One problem was that the hole where the water comes out is very small, resulting in very low flow (would never keep up with the leakage rate of our old pond).

It was fairly easy for me to remedy this. Using a small screwdriver, I popped the float out from where it's hinged. Then I took a 1/16" drill bit and drilled out the hole from the upstream (pressure) side. This increased the flow greatly, and reassembly was (literally) a snap. If you try this, be aware that drilling a larger hole may cause the valve to not shut off properly (the larger the hole, the more force required to close it).

Can't really evaluate its durability as I just installed it.

The unit works as promised but its make of plastic and is fragile. I'm not sure of its long term viability. I'm using this device to control the water level in a fish pond. Note that the outlet is VERY small....and therefore the flow rate is restricted. If you're looking for something that will allow a garden hose flow then look elsewhere. I think this unit comes in a variety of sizes.

Valving action was sure and efficient during set-up and test. Shut-off function ceased in about 3 weeks.May have been too fragile for line pressure at water fountain (not measured). Haven't inspected since failure due to difficulty in disassembling fountain.

Although this is a plastic float valve (there are others out there made with durable brass parts), it functions quite well, and does just what the manufacturer claims it will do. Whether a plastic valve like this will hold up, only time will tell.

This product arrived on time and packaging was satisfactory. I used this hose with an aquarium pump and hose to fabricate a continuous fountain/water dish for our cat. This project works well and much better than any commercial product. We had to replace the cat water fountains and/or their internal parts on way too many occasions. This pump is plastic but tough and should last a long time.

SunSun JUP-23 13W UV Sterilizer Submersible Pump

SunSun JUP-23 13W UV Sterilizer Submersible PumpI have a 60 gallon fresh water tank and use a Marineland Magnum 350 Canister Filter to keep it clean. But I have always had a slight haze in my tank that I never seem to be able to get rid of no matter what I do. I installed this 13 watt UV Sterilizer and within 4 days of putting it in the tank my water is now crystal clear. This thing is amazing! And it is absolutely silent in operation. It has a water flow adjustment on it that I turned down to about half flow to allow the water more exposure time to the UV light. I don't know if that helped or not but I didn't need the amount of flow that it was putting out as the Magnum 350 already creates quite a current in the tank as it is. I wish I knew about these things years ago. The difference in water clarity is absolutely stunning. I can't stop staring at my tank now because it is so crystal clear. The fish even seem to be more active and appear to be healthier and happier. I highly recommend this to anyone with an aquarium. The only con is that it is quite large. I plan to get some tall plants to try to hide it a little better. Oh, it also didn't come with any directions which surprised me. But it's really simple to figure out and the illustration on the side of the box explains most of where everything is. Except it doesn't mention anything about the air adjustment valve on the top where an airline is attached to add bubbles to the water flow. Simply turn it counter-clockwise to increase the bubbles or clockwise to decrease or turn the bubbles off. I keep mine set to off. I find the bubbles noisy and I already have a good aerator in the tank anyway.

This is my second brand of uv I've owned. The last one was the 9w aquatop brand. This has a lower water rate than the 9w which for me is a good thing. The whole idea is to steralize not to be a power head. So, the stronger light + lower water flow rate from the unit in my opinion does a wonderful job. A little bulky in the back of the tank. I leave my on 24/7. But u less u have a bigger tank watch ur temperatures. All uv lights will raise temp slightly. More so the smaller the tank. All and all for 50$... Just buy it you will be happy.

Hydor AQUA COLOR UL Aquarium LED Light - Red

Hydor AQUA COLOR UL Aquarium LED Light - RedGives a cool lighting effect but what I really like is the intense amount of bubbles it puts out. --Does take up a little tank space but in a 55 gal tank it's no problem for me. Aeration is important for oxygen content and fish health. So far this product has the others beat. Also, does not need a seperate pump so for the price and quality I rate this 5 stars and highly recommend!

OK, this was not the one in the picture but was the newer model instead. The older one generated a lot wider light beam compared to the current model. Not what I wanted so I returned. As with most anything these days the newer version is not as good as the older version.

We have a 55gal planted tank that we wanted to add some night lighting too in addition to the LED's in our hood. Our water was perfectly clear when I put these in. Unfortunately they were not really bright enough to have any affect. I would guess that 4 or 5 would be required to adequately light our tank. At that price we would be better off buying the LED light kit that comes with a hub and has lights that plug into that.

There is also the issue that 4 or 5 of these would require there own power strip and timer.

Laguna Pressure-Flo 3200 UVC Filter

Laguna Pressure-Flo 3200 UVC FilterI have owned this filter for about three years and run it 24/7. The difference it made in my pond clarity was like night and day. I can actually see my fish again!! The UV 25 watt lamp replacement is spendy and I go through at least one a year but it is well worth it. When the lamp burns out, my pond does not take long to tell me, as the clarity soon deteriates. I recently discovered the backwashing function did not seem to be effective any longer but finally figured out the foam filters which are scrubbed in the cleaning process shrink over time and no longer make contact with the scrubbing blades. Replacements are now on the way. Living in Montana, I am forced to move fish and filtration system into my garage in the winter but I have found this easy to do. Highly recommend this product to anyone who cares about keeping healthy, clear water in their pond!Laguna Pressure-Flo 3200 UVC Filter

I have a 700-800 gallon koi pond and I purchased this to replace my last filter that died after 5 years. This filter was cheaper, and did a far better job. This summer I had no problems with algae at all, the UV worked as advertised. Additionally, the filters are incredibly easy to clean using the backwash feature. Considering the ease of maintenance and overall performance of this system I would definitely purchase it again. As an added bonus this item was HUNDREDS of dollars cheaper then at the local aquaculture store. Be sure to read specs many manufacturers seem to change the names of some identical products.

Buy Laguna Pressure-Flo 3200 UVC Filter Now

I brought the Laguna Pressure-Flo 3200 UVC along with the Laguna Max-Flo 2900 Electric Waterfall and Pump because I thought I was getting the best. I spent $500 for both. And because I spent that kind of money, we hired a electrician to run electric underground and mounted outlets by the pond. It took over a month to get this done and find the right flexible hose to connect both. Before I even got a chance to plug them into the outlet, I went to connect the intake hose to the filter and it cracked!!! I plugged them both into the electric outlet and water was shooting out!!! $350!!! I was desperate. I put Gorilla Glue and eventually bought a can of rubber spray to seal the crack. I called Hagen, who manufactures the Laguna products, to complain about the poor quality of their product. (If you look at the picture of the filter you'll see how thin the side intake area is compared to the outtake area and the area that dispenses the waste. Oh no, you can't see it because it is on the right side.) Their reply was "We do not cover that. Do you want to make a formal complaint?" He gave me an email address.

I was able to find a replace lid from a company online for $40, but I'm trying to make due with what I have. It looks ugly. Unfortunately, in the last four days I've went in the back yard to find an empty pond. The hose keeps coming off the filter. I connected the hoses to the attachments that came with filter. First time I had electrical tape to try and secure it. Second time I had a clamp screwed in tight. It still came off!!! My husband helped me put an additional clamp on both using an power drill to make sure they are secure. I'm so paranoid. I keep looking out the window to see if there is water in the pond. Fortunately, the pump is still working!!!

Would I recommend this filter to anyone??? NO!!! I almost have my mind made up that if it disconnects again to just buy a skimmer or just connect the pump to a waterfall attachment and count the loss. We shall see. By the way, when it is connected the pond is nice and clear. But just the problem of worrying about it leaking where it cracked and the hose disconnecting is too much!!

Signed,

Very Disappointed

July 22, 2013

Update Well, the Gorilla Glue and rubber spray finally gave way. Fortunately, I had ordered the replacement lid from Amazon for $29. Thank you Amazon!!! Was able to transfer everything over to the new lid. I was shock on how the flow of the waterfall is so much stronger now. I finally go my pond the way I want it. No thanks to Laguna!!!

After 6 months or so the filter foam elements shrink and the cleaning blades become ineffective. Also somehow mud bypasses the foam elements and settles in the bottom. In order to get it working, filter elements are to be replaced and filter cleaned on a regular basis. This is expensive and time consuming. I am replacing it with a filter but without foam elements, and the biospheres can be back washed.

We purchased this UVC filter thinking we were getting one of the best on the market. It did a great job of reducing the algae in our koi pond within a few days. Things went great until we put it away for the winter. We VERY carefully disassembled everything and packed it away with cushioning. In the spring, we carefully inspected and reassembled everything. Once it was running, we quickly realized the UVC light wasn't working as the algae was getting the best of the pond. I ordered a new replacement bulb thinking it was regular maintenance and per the owner's manual.

The algae got worse, so I took the thing apart again. The bulb was clearly blown--black smudges near the connectors. I ordered a new bulb and consulted the owner's manual. I did the wet test as per the book and found there was water inside the quartz sleeve, which obviously blew the bulb. Now I have to find someplace to get it fixed, or I can buy a new head assembly for eighty bucks.

Boo! I wish I'd bought a different style of UVC light, which was all we really needed.

Fluval EBI Nano Shrimp Habitat, 7.9-gallon

Fluval EBI Nano Shrimp Habitat, 7.9-gallonVery nice tank. Setup was easy, somewhat customizable, well packed. I use it as a desktop light as well since the provided mini lamp has a full spectrum bulb-easy on the eyes.

First thing I did, inspect the glass for damage... small blemishes, but easily passes QC. Submersible filter flawed for shrimp, baby shrimp can easily get sucked in and pureed, I've even caught medium sized juvvie shrimp in the media chamber (largest foam chamber). Easy fix for experienced aquarist-stuff the first chamber with filter floss. I removed the largest piece of foam from the media chamber, and replaced it with bio-max. Water is extremely cloudy and murky on the first day because of soil substrate, pristine water by the 3rd day because of the polishing power of the filter floss.

Great buy.

People are harsh. I wanted a rimless nano.I looked at getting just a rimless tank but the price was the same as this tank that came with stuff.

I have been keeping fish for 13 years I have had many tanks and lots of old filters laying around. When you are hooked on this hobby to tend to accumulate lots of fish stuff.

I bought this tank becaue the price and I love the size and look. The tanks is good not flimsy. It looks great. I love the little net and the food and shrimp stuff. The substrate I like but not sure how it will hold up. I have read many mix things about this Fluval substrate. I am going to use it but I have back up Akadama if this stuff does not hold up. It does look great but is soft and light. I used flora max as my base substrate. I hope this light last I really like it.

The background .... What were they thinking putting styrofoam in a fish tank as the back ground. When I saw how poorly stuck on it was I took it off. If you want to keep the back ground take it off and silicone it back on your self. They only put sticky dots 4 on top 4 middle and 4 bottom. It was pretty weak and popped off really easy. it took up too much space anyways. So I put the background behind the tank out of the water. It looks good.

Personally I love Fluval filters and aqua clear filters that are made by the same company. I know Fluval aquariums are very popular in Europe so I had to try one myself. The tank alone is worth the money the other stuff is just a bonus. this tank was the perfect size for what I wanted.

The kit has everything you need to get started on your shrimp tank, water conditioner/ dechlorinator, mineral supplement, and light. only thing that's just ok is the thermometer and the fact it doesn't come with a heater but that's ok i pick one up for $12 bucks. I'm very happy with my purchase!! :)

***Note, My review is for this tank as a terrarium. The only two things I used were the tank and the light. I threw away the pump and the foam backing as well as the net, thermometer, etc.***

I used this tank to set up a terrarium. The tank is very nice looking. The rounded corners were exactly what I wanted. The light is much brighter than I expected. I'm going to make a hood so it doesn't flood the room with light. As a grow light though it seems to be working well. In the short time since I set it up I seem to see some growth in one of my plants and its not leggy (long stems with few leaves indicative of a plant not getting enough light). The tank isn't getting much in the way of natural sunlight so I believe any growth would be due to the grow light.

As a tank for a terrarium, I highly recommend this.

All pieces were delivered in great condition. Others are saying the back pops off, but I belive they have since increased the ammount of adhesive they use and I've had no problems with it after 1 month.

The substrate it comes with is of good quality, but I bought another bag to increase the depth for my plants.

Filter works well, but I would recommend adding biological filteration to it as well as it only comes with a sponge insert. Also, the filter does create a slight hum, which may bother an light sleepers who wish to keep it in their room.

All around a great purchase for the price you get it at.

UPDATE:

Last night I woke up to find half of the tank water on the floor. The bottom seal had begun to leak. Im sure this is not a common thing as no one else has written about having any issues with it, but I'm still very disappointed that this happened.

IVS Portal 4" Aquarium Viewer

IVS Portal 4' Aquarium ViewerPros:

Nice to see the details with the portal viewer

It can be used to clean some algae off the tank

Seems to be well built

Cons:

Not that great as cleaning magnet

Has a limited range to view close ups, but I've read they're working on or already have another lens to view objects further from the original lens.

Summary:

I got the portal viewer to see close ups of SPS coral in my tank and that's exactly what this does. The range of view is somewhere around 16" for a nice clear image. Any further and it gets blurry. A little over priced for what it does, but it does it's job. Great way to inspect coral for any pests.

We love the portal and use it all the time to look at things in our saltwater reef tank. It is also helpful in finding pests like glass anemones. We don't use it as a glass cleaner and prefer our other tools for that. A definite "must have" for enjoying your reef tank.

HDE Digital Timer Aquarium Automatic Food Portion Fish Feeder

HDE Digital Timer Aquarium Automatic Food Portion Fish Feederhave had this feeder for around 4 months. it is wonderful! i have a crazy schedule and depend on this to feed my fish. my only disappointment is how easy it is to change the feed adjuster. barely bump it and it changes the amount of food that is dropped. i finally got it set to where i wanted it and taped it down so i dont have to reset each time i remove the feeder to clean tank and refill.

I left for a 2 week trip and it worked great. When we got home I was worried about dead fish and frogs and they were all alive. The 2 things I don't like is you have to leave the tip of the aquarium lid open. But for an inexpensive way to make sure your fish are fed it works. It did not come with instructions on how to work it and that was frustrating but luckily we could get online to look. I would recommend this product if you don't have expensive fish and if you did I would recommend looking else where. We have a 10 gallon tank and they were set up to be fed twice a day.

Not worth the shipping costs to send it back for a refund. Go to a local pet store and buy one off the shelf.

I have been using this product for more than a month and it is awesome. The fishes are healthy and I dont have to worry that my fishes will be hungry. One thing that is kinda hard is to set up the feeding time. However, once you have read the instruction manual, it will be clear.

U.P. Aqua Co2 Indicator

U.P. Aqua Co2 IndicatorThis is kind of a hard product to get wrong, considering how simple it is, so I wasn't surprised when it worked. The hardest part was mixing the proper kH reference solution to fill it with. This wasn't hard (baking soda and water), but it would have been nice if the included instructions described the process, rather than adding the indicator solution to a sample of tank water. Using 4 dkH reference solution will give you more accurate results than tank water, and is pretty easy to do if you have a kH test kit (like this one API KH (CARBONATE HARDNESS) TEST KIT. )

After adding the reference solution and indicator, I flipped it over and put it in the tank. It remained green. Hmm. Does it work? I turned off my co2 system for 24 hours. It turned blue. So far so good. Ever the scientist, I then cranked the system up. After a few hours, the indicator turned a yellowish-green. I backed off, pointed a powerhead at the surface to off-gas some of the extra co2. It turned back to green. Looks good to me.

Does what you'd expect. The only minor flaw I could find is that the suction cup will only stay put for about a week, slowly allowing air back in. I find myself squishing it back flat weekly, worried that it'll fall off.

Buy U.P. Aqua Co2 Indicator Now

I was a little hesitant purchasing this....but it's simplicity is surprising and it seems to work as described. The instructions are a little sparse but in reality there's really not that much to say. Add the fluid...place in aquarium....compare the color to the included color chart.

This is the first co2 indicator I have bought. It is made of plastic, but does the job. You could say it is better than glass because it's less fragile. I believe the indicator works, it changes color as I increase my co2 with the U.P. Aqua atomizer. The one issue I had was putting the fluid in the clear cap then attaching the base, but then you have to flip the unit over to get it facing the right way, but some of the fluid came out of the opening, which can be expected, I guess. Maybe I need more practice. Overall does what it was supposed to do.

Yet another failure on my end for making this purchase, o ring wasn't tight enough to clear plastic cover and the solution slowly started to seep out and into my tank had to take it out not even 24 hours after I received it was hoping it would have worked because its not that big and doesn't look that bad either. 12 Steps to Cycle a Fish Tank

Nobody wants to have unhappy, unhealthy fish in their aquariums. To ensure your fish are as relaxed and disease-free as can be, you will have to cycle your fish tank. Follow these steps to create the best environment possible for your fish.

Steps

Part One: Purchasing Your Cycling Fish

  1. Understand the nitrogen cycle of a new fish tank. The nitrogen cycle, also known as the nitration cycle, is the process that breaks toxic nitrogen waste products into less harmful components. During the cycle, your aquarium will develop beneficial bacteria that are necessary for your fish to live healthy, happy lives.
    • To go more in depth, your fish produce ammonia that can be harmful if it reaches high levels. Your aquarium will produce Nitrosomonas bacteria that will process ammonia and turn it into nitrite, another harmful substance. Luckily, cycling your aquarium causes Nitrobacter and other bacteria to grow that turn nitrite into nitrate--which is relatively harmless.
  2. Select hardy types of fish for your cycling aquarium. You should buy a variety of fish that you plan to have in your aquarium later on. These fish need to be hardy in order to survive the cycling process. Your local pet shop will be able to give you more direction on the types of fish you should buy for your specific tank.
    • For an aquarium made up of small community fish, Zebra Danios or White Clouds are good fish to start off with.
    • Barb fish, such as Tiger Barbs or Cherry Barbs, work well in a slightly aggressive tank.
    • Do not use goldfish, particularly Feeder goldfish for a cycling process. Goldfish become more susceptible to disease when they are kept in cycled tropical water.
  3. Buy a limited number of fish. The number of fish will depend on the size of your aquarium and the type of fish that you buy. Buying a lot of fish will produce a large amount of waste, and could potentially cause some water problems during the cycling process.
    • A general rule to follow is that for a 10 to 20 gallon tank, two to three small schooling fish should be purchased for the cycling process.
  4. Place your fish in your tank. During the cycle, feed your fish carefully, making sure to only feed them what they need. Excess food that goes uneaten will decay and foul your tank's water.
    • You can also perform a fishless cycle by adding ammonia chloride manually into the water. If you are afraid that you have purchased fish that will not be sturdy enough to survive a cycle, you can opt to add ammonia manually. If you choose to cycle your tank this way, know that you will have to monitor your chemical balances more closely so that you add the right amount of ammonia each day.
