EHEIM Jager Aquarium Thermostat Heater 150W

After my Marineland Stealth Aquarium water heater literally exploded in the tank due to a defect (never received recall notice issued back in April 2011), I purchased this as my second option primarily because my first option cost $90+ (for a titanium model with electronic chip). Fortunately, the aquarium tank glass did not crack and we didn't lose any fish due to the Marineland Stealth Aquarium water heater exploding.

This is one of the few remaining aquarium heaters on the market still made in Germany and not coming from elsewhere.

1. It works efficiently and accurately as it should, keeps the temperature within range constantly for worry free use.

3. Indicator light allows for a quick walk by scan for added worry free use.

4. Temperature control is easy to use and easy to read.

5. We have a second external thermometer on the opposite side of the tank and the temperature is always within range.

I only bought Marineland Stealth heaters before this one, and am glad I tried it. The Jager is more conspicuous than the Stealth, but I believe it is made to a higher quality. One of my Stealths broke, and another was recalled, so I decided to move on. The Jager is my favorite so far. I would have tried the Fluval heater with the microprocessor, but it was considerably more expensive. Overall, the Eheim looks good, has an orange indicator light that lets you know its on, is fully submersible, and can be calibrated if it becomes inaccurate. The suction cups stick rather well and the suction cup holder is actually pretty nice. Also something that led to get this one is that it heats more water per watt than other heaters, which saves power (the 150W will heat 75gal where I believe you would need 200W of another heater). Recommend and would buy again

**UPDATE 1-14-12: Faulty thermostat and bad customer service!

Okay so I originally thought this heater was great right? (Original review in Nov 2011) I used this product for several weeks after my initial review until I saw that my Fluval G filter was telling me that my water was getting too hot (84-ish degrees). I tested what the filter registered by using two other thermometers and they all read the same (so I knew it wasn't a thermometer issue). What could be happening? I then realized that I've always seen the orange indicator light of the Jager on, never off. Sooo, it just keeps heating even after reaching set temp. I tried the calibration. Did not help. Then I put 110F water in a bucket, put in the Jager and plugged it in. The orange light still came on! Amazon warranty was expired by this point, but Eheim offers a 3-yr warranty on the heater.

I contacted Eheim North America by email/comment on their site. They apparently have no phone number so you have to write them, which blows. Okay so I got a quick reply (the next day!) which I was happy about that just said to email them my proof of purchase and a shipping address so I did that the same day. This was on Dec 23 2011 and I have yet to hear back. I have since contacted them again weeks ago to see what the problem was and still no answer. A 3-yr warranty on the Jager is great, but if no one answers you it might as well be a 3 second warranty!!

TIP: Other people seem to love this heater but I have had a 100% failure rate (1/1). **MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THAT THE THERMOSTAT WORKS ON THIS WITHIN 30 DAYS SO YOU CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF AMAZON'S WARRANTY! You do not want to try to talk to Eheim Tech Support!

I cannot find their phone number, has anyone found it?

I'm still willing to give Eheim a shot, and will actually probably order another one of these. I'll also try contacting them again. Also, I will update again if I ever get a reply, otherwise, as much as this heater looks good, heats well, and has awesome temp dial and calibration, the thermostat is too important of a part for me to give this anything more than a 1 star rating. I hope you all have better luck.

I bought this heater about 6 months ago, and it does what it's supposed to do... Keeps a constant temperature in my tank, and it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. It's easy to set because the dial actually has numbers on it 80, 78, 76, etc, as opposed to just High and Low.

Marina Betta Kit Plastic Plant, Hairgrass

I bought this plant five months ago for my 5-gallon aquarium that houses 4 male fancy guppies. The hair grass is soft and waves in the current from the filter. The guppies swim down into it, around it, and through it with no hesitation. I've bought a number of other plastic plants, thinking a second plant would look nice. However, they've all been stiff and/or with sharp points and the guppies will have nothing to do with them. Those plants are now in the back of a cupboard awaiting the next garage sale and the Marina hair grass remains the only plant in the tank. The suction cup is strong and adheres to the glass bottom of my fish tank well enough that it would have to be pried loose if I wanted to remove it. The fronds are soft and non-harmful to the large tails and fins of the guppies. Now that I've compared this hair grass with other plastic plants, I feel fortunate to have found it. I recommend it without reservation.

My betta is in love with this plant, & it does not rip his fins! I bought four of them and placed them all in my 10 gallon tank, and they seem to be doing well. One issue is that the suction cup and and actual plastic plant do detach from each other but can easily be out back together.

This plastic plant was actually stiffer than I had anticipated, however, it appears that my betta does not really mind. He enjoys swimming in and out of it. Not only that, the suction cup works extremely well. Over all, I will recommend this to anyone who desires a plastic plant in their thank.

My sweet Myles, the double-tail Betta, absolutely LOVES this plant! And it goes so perfectly in his 1 gallon bowl, offers color and variety

Laguna Aeration Kit for Ponds

This product works extraordinarily well!! Like one of the other reviewers, I typically kept a $250 pump going throughout the winter to keep my 4000 gallon pond from freezing over. Because I didn't filter the water during the winter, I had to continually clear out deris from the pump (a really, really big pain). I tried using the Laguana aeration kit this past winter. I thought I had nothing to loose for about $30.00. Wow!! What a pleasant surprise!! Not only did the aeration kit keep the pond surface from freezing (and the temperatures fell below freezing and dropped near zero on several occasions last winter in my neck of the woods--zone 6)but the algae that typically overwintered and thrived in my pond during the winter months DID NOT DO SO!! Algae was virtually non-existant the entire winter season!

I normally have to use TWO UV lights in my pond to control algae but this season I'm using only one. My trusty aeration kit has significantly reduced my algae problem and the aeration solution is the cheapest and most effective I have ever used! Nothing else in my pond set-up has changed and this is the first time in over a dozen years maintaining a pond that algae hasn't been a problem!!!)

I highly recommend this product!! But I do have one caveat: the instructions recommend a one-way valve (not included) to keep water from siphoning back into the pump if the power goes off. I was a tad annoyed that this item wasn't included in the kit but it cost only a couple of dollars at PetSmart and well worth the peace of mind.

I have a small plastic container near my pond that I use to protect the aeration

pump and my uv transformer. No problem drilling a hole for the power cord and airline (actually the hole was already there because of my uv clarifyer transformer needing protection).

I've recommended this product to all my friends with ponds. At Amazon's price of $30.00, I'm purchasing another for back-up.

This pump works great. It is larger than it appears in the pic. I'd say its about 9 inches long, and about 3.5 inches high. Maybe 4 inches thick. I have a 2200 gallon koi pond and this pump makes plenty of air for it. It produces a lot of bubbles. And if you have somewhere to put it, then you can't even hear it run. I just ran a long airline, and I never even hear this pump. It is also pretty power efficient. It doesn't come with an air stone though, for actually making the bubbles. You are going to need one of the larger airstones because this pump flows a lot more air than some of the smaller ones. I would recommend the big 5 inch circular one from petsmart or someplace like that. And you need to let the stone soak for a long time before using it, just like the package says. Or else it won't make bubbles near as well. Learned that from personal experience. All in all, this pump has served me very well. I would certainly not hesitate to buy another one. It has lasted fine in the freezing cold, and in the punishing texas heat.

Pros:

Can pump air to a decent depth. My pond is about 5 feet deep at it's lowest point and I had to weight the air-stone and drop it to about 4.5 feet or so. It kept pushing a respectable amount of bubbles at that depth, but much more that that and the output drops considerably.

Price. It's ability to pump at the depth I had it would have choked anything you could purchase at a local store at this price point. The depth will probably decrease it's usable life, but I had it running 24/7 for 4 months straight.

Air-stone and tubing is included. Nothing remarkable about the air-stone, but the tubing included with mine was much longer than the indicated 30" (inches? probably a typo, should be 30'), mine was closer to 25 feet. It's also the more expensive silicone tubing as opposed to the cheaper vinyl tubing that eventually gets hard and stiff.

The styrofoam float is a bit of an eyesore but it will keep the stone at whatever depth you need if you use it.

Cons:

In my opinion it is pretty loud at its highest setting. Not so loud that it is completely nerve-wracking (I've had smaller indoor aquarium air pumps that were louder after a while), but it's definitely not what I would consider quiet. You will notice it if you don't have a pretty vigorous waterfall or other background sounds.

If you were thinking about using it inside the home, it could probably run quite a few air-stones at the depths of your average indoor aquarium; however, the sound would be unacceptable to me in the house. I never tried to build a sound dampening box for it, so that may be a viable option.

Summary:

I used this in the hottest part of the summer to get additional movement and aeration in my pond because my bottom drain is not aerated. I think it's a little too loud for the area I have to put it in (near a seating area), so I'll probably relegate it to the far end of the patio and use it in a quarantine tank or try my hand at some hydroponics.

I think it's definitely worth the asking price, but obviously you'll need to spend much more if you need it to be quiet and run at deeper depths.

Bought this to keep my pond oxygenated through the winter. Planning on housing the pump in a plastic tub with lid to keep it dry and feeding the aeration tube into the pond. Hope the fish and frogs are happy (and alive) as they hibernate!

For years I would keep my pond pump running during the late fall and winter months, which meant that I had the clean the filter each week, a real pain in cold weather. I came across this product tht claimed it would provide aireation for the fish during these times of the year. This is my second one, the first lasted through two fall and winter seasons, but the power supply had lost some power. This is an excellent product and it should last me for another year or so. One thing it is important to know, you do not have to run this unit from inside your house or garage (as suggested in the instructions). Just get a plactic box (e.g. Rubbermaid) with a top, cut a hole for the air line to the pond and one for the electical cord and two holes on each side for ventalation. This keeps the unit dry and it has worked without fail 24/7 in below freezing temparatures. AT $49 or so, it is a real bargain.

Pros: This light is the perfect size for my 3 gallon tank.

Cons: Doesn't work with light timer; bulb is not replaceable once it burns out; bulb only lasted about 4 months.

I am posting this review to let people know that there is no moonlight "adaptor". It uses a combination of blue and white LEDs. I was under the impression that I would be able to switch between the two lights, but that is not the case. There are only two settings, on and off.

I use it on a 29 gallon terrarium. The light reaches to all points of the tank that aren't blocked by something. It is strong enough to create shadows where tank decorations are in the way.

The clamp is not wide enough to fit on the rim of my tank. Included is a small piece of black plastic thingy that you can screw onto a surface and then clamp your light to it. I didn't want to screw anything into my tank, so I used gorilla glue to attach it to the outside top rim of my tank.

I am torn between a 3 and 4 star rating, because I AM able to see my terrarium at night. But the description about an adaptor is incorrect. Hence the 3 stars.

Great little light for my guppy bowl which is a 2 gallon giant brandy snifter. Few other lights had an option to accomodate so thin an edge. My aquarium plants are now thriving. The moonlight blue daylight combination enhanced the fish colors. One down side it the need to manually turn in off and on. I would prefer if it worked on a timer. But the fish have trained nicely to the light, that feeding time is at hand. Smooth transaction and prompt delivery.

I was also under the impression that there would be an adaptor to switch from white to blue LEDs for day or night lighting. Not the case! The blue & white lights come out looking very moonlight-ish to me.

The light is also much tinier than I expected. It only lights up about half of my 33 gal tank, so I wouldn't recommend it for tanks bigger than 15 gal. It fits up to 1/4" rim, so make sure you measure before purchasing! 1/4" inch is a TIGHT fit, so think about your positioning because it will be difficult to reposition afterwards.

If I had read the comment about the light bulb not being replaceable, I would have never bought this product. 30$ for four months of use is definitely not worth it. Next time I'm buying a regular desk lamp!

Exotic Environments Forgotten Ruins Aquarium Ornament

Since this is a PRODUCT review, I decided to rate it based on the product, itself. It's a very nice item, and would have looked even better in my daughter's little fish tank. I guess the reason I did not give it five stars is because the manufacturer has to take a little blame for a product that breaks so easily during shipment.

The first time I received this item, one of the back corners on the bottom was completely broken off. I decided to do an exchange. When the second one arrived, the OTHER back corner was completely shattered. These failed transactions are a combination of poor packaging (Amazon), careless handling (USPS), and bad construction (manufacturer).

I will not be taking a third chance on this product, and I really regret that my daughter will not get to enjoy it in her fish tank. If you're willing to risk the chance that it might arrive intact, I would probably recommend the product because I think that, compared to pet stores, the price of this item is very good. But if you don't have to patience to deal with products arriving damaged, I recommend going to your local pet shop and spending the extra $5 or $10 for a comparable item.

I had no problems with the castle. It was not damaged in any way. I was a little worried that it would be too big for my tank, but it fits wonderfully. The holes aren't big enough for fish that are bigger than bettas, so if that's what you're looking for, this isn't it. Overall I think it's a great addition to my tank and the fish seem to like it too.

U.P. Aqua Cichlid Stone (medium)

I bought the small and medium size for my 15 gallon column cichlid tank. I rinsed them and put them in and the fish love them.

I think this is a very nice Cichlid stone although from the picture, it appeared there was only one hole in the stone. The one I received has a hole in both the back and front and although the Cichlids seem to enjoy it, it does not offer the smaller Cichlids the protection they would like as another Cichlid can chase them out of the stone from the other end. I would have liked to have known the stone had two holes. I would also like to know the actual size of the stone because I felt this stone was on the smaller size yet it was labeled medium in the advertisement. The larger Cichlids that are in the tank are not able to get into the stone.

I don't know much about fish tank lights, it was a gift for my boyfriend, it met all his specifications and was a SUPER great deal compared to the other retailers we were looking for. I love the look it give my tank...very organic and zen like. Pretty easy to clean..tiny fish love to hide in it...so be careful when you do clean...would recomend a small bowl with water so the can come out of hiding before cleaning

They look good in the tank but I am disappointed that the large one is not weighted, although it does have holes in it so that it can fit around the bubble tube. I was just intending for it to sit on the side and not centered on the bubble tube---i guess i could put some rocks in the middle of it to get it to stay down. The larger one also seems to fall apart pretty easy. The green parts can be snapped back into place but it gets a little annoying when you have to do that if you take the bubble tube out.

Even those these were plastic they're pretty good! Got these for my mom for mother's day (her hobby is fish) so it was a great gift in my opinion without spending a lot of money on the real thing! Though I wish I could have gotten more floaters. It was one floater and two bottom sitters. I really like watching the big one float and spin. It's cool!

API Safe and Easy Aquarium Spray, 8-Ounce

Most specifically I find when using this product to clean something slanted or vertical it is best to drape a paper towel on whatever it is and spray the paper towel through to it. Let it "soak" as directed on the bottle for a few minutes, then make sure you wipe it off with a *wet* paper towel/cloth/what-have-you as directed on the bottle. When I use it this way it works wonders on the hard water 'crust' on the glass canopy, light cover, filter cover, miscellaneous. I love this product!

I did find that when I didn't follow those exact instructions (i.e., surface was not in contact with solution while the 3 minutes was going on, it was left there long enough to evaporate or drip off, or I wiped the solution off with a dry paper towel/cloth) it was singularly unimpressive. But hey, that's what directions are for. ^_^

After using this product twice I would have to say that it does not work. You are supposed to leave the solution on for 3 minutes before washing items and I did this the 1st time, the 2nd time I left the solution on longer and I still have hard water stains and salt build up. I honestly get a better clean from using dishsoap.

I prefer to use only cleaning products that are natural, so that I am much less likely to contaminate my fish tanks when going back & forth between the two. I even use other natural cleaners such as Method brand throughout my home so that we are not putting our pet's health in jeopardy throughout day-to-day living.

Bought this to be able to keep the glass on my turtle tank cleaner. It works to a certain degree but not anywhere near as well as I had hoped. I clean the filters and tank every Sunday so it's not like water has a chance to build up for long. We're also on very well filtered creek water so there are no chemicals, chlorine or anything else in our water. It is crystal clear. I had high hopes but it's only so-so.
