Aquarium Biochemical Sponge Filter Fish Tank Air Pump XY-2821

Aquarium Biochemical Sponge Filter Fish Tank Air Pump XY-2821So far the XY-281 seem's to be working just fine.I have it in my 10 Gallon community tank with my Male Betta (Fireball) and 3 pencil fish and 3 cherry barb's plus one miniature pleco.I also have a Aqua-tech 5-15 power filter running on this tank that just wasnt cutting it.Now just about 6 hours after installing the XY-281 in my tank it seems to have cleared up the water making it much clearer.

One more thing the quality of this filter cant be beat for $3.99 shipped.I might buy 2 or 3 more for my other tanks. Also this filter doesnt require an airstone which is great

Updated 02/17/2013.. I just ordered 2 more of these. They seem to work so well im gonna put one in my 5 gallon tank and remove the Aqua-tech 5-15 power filter that is knocking my female Betta all over the place

It is a sponge filter as well as sort of an air stone. It helps to keep the water clear and the bubbles it produces helps with aeration of the water. Excellent product.

Fish Bubble

Fish BubbleBeing the novice I was, when I was about 12 I "rescued" 2 bettas from a Pets Mart and put them both into separate, cheap, tiny little novelty tanks, and that's how they lived for about a year and a half until I bought my third one and put him into a 5 gallon tank. I instantly noticed the difference!

My 3rd Betta was flying all over the place, he was noticeably happier, responded faster (in a non-aggressive way) when I'd come near the tank, and he lived for a little more than 3 and a half years! My other two barely made it to 2 years. They were depressed, uninterested, slow to respond...everything you don't want your Betta to be. And once I moved them into larger 3 gallon tanks each, they perked up like none other!

Betta's need to be in 3-10 gallon tanks by themselves (5 or larger and you might be able to add compatible fish, though I wasn't willing to risk it). In the wild, they live in rice paddies which are thousands of gallons of swimming space and naturally aerated and filtered, and only live in "small puddles" for about 2 or 3 months (at most) out of the year during the dry season.

What's more, while Wild bettas may be able to take smaller conditions longer and survive better, the fancy bettas we see in the stores today are not nearly as durable or hardy and need more stimulation and space.

This "tank" has no filtration, has little space for the Betta, and isn't much better than the initial cup they come in. I'd use it for water plants; less cruel and easier to tend to, and it would look just as pretty!

For a Betta...no. It's just cruel to confine a fish, no matter how small, into that sort of an environment for extended periods of time.

No fish should live in a tank this small. There are many lower cost alternatives to "fish bowls" that in the long run will be less work and provide you and your fish a happy life together.

While I would never buy one of these for a live fish, making a planter out of one was an awesome idea. Originally I was going to hang it on a wall, but instead I have it hanging in a window and it looks great.

While these bowls are totally unsuitable for a live fish, there are many fun things you can do with them. Besides my planter idea, I'm considering getting a second and created an LED lamp, and I'm sure others have similar ideas for using such an inexpensive and remarkably sturdy thing.

my sons snail Gary lived in the bubble wall mounted fish tank for about 5 months then it apparently sprang a leak while we were away on vacation. no more Gary and a very upset Nathaniel (my son) so over all I'd say it was a flimsy piece of junk.

Want Fish Bubble Discount?

Betta Fish are tropical fish. They require a heated tank... tank, not bowl and a minimum of 3 gallons of water, 5 gallons even better. People sometimes say that these fish "don't do much", well it is probably because they are in an unheated environment. They are intelligent and can come to recognize their owner. This product is totally inadequate. Betta fish can live for years, but inside one of these half-bubble traps I can only imagine their life will be shortened. Yes, they are used to shallow water...... shallow water that covers a huge distance, not 4 inches. Please do not purchase this product, it really is inhumane for such a tropical fish. There are better products out there. I am disappointed in Amazon for marketing this junk quite frankly. It is not a fish tank, as the name suggests, it is a half a fish bowl. Soup is for bowls, tanks are for fish.

Lee`s Aquarium Tank Divider 40 Breeder 17X16

Lee`s Aquarium Tank Divider 40 Breeder 17X16Works quite well. The fish, however, remain the fish... if they are aggressive, they still attack, only now it's the divider. Works well to isolate brooding females.

Works in a pinch, but the support brackets make it impossible to close the hood, and for a secure fit, you must clear all gravel and refill once in place. Works great for a tempory fix, just not perminent.

Hydor 50w Hydrokable Substrate Heater, 20' - for Aquariums 16-33 gal

Hydor 50w Hydrokable Substrate Heater, 20' - for Aquariums 16-33 galUPDATE:

The cable just stopped heating a few weeks ago. If they sent me a free replacement, I wouldn't take it, because it's not worth enough to pay me for the 10 or so hours it would take to lift 30 lbs of sand and all the landscaping out of my tank to replace this thing. *Sad*

OLD REVIEW:

The cable is heating my tank nicely, under a sand bed. I'm using it with a thermostat.

The installation was a bit alarming, because the suction cups only stayed on for 5 minutes at first. Then I reset them 3-5 times, and they stayed on long enough to cover the cable with the sand. I'm pretty sure they're stuck in place just fine under the sand, but I would not use them without substrate or with easily movable one.

Not sure if it's absolutely necessary, and a lot more expensive than the typical heater, but with the Hydor thermostat it works great !!

Buy Hydor 50w Hydrokable Substrate Heater, 20' - for Aquariums 16-33 gal Now

Product appears to work well, but I purchased it for a little 6 gallon tank that will be housing small jellyfish. When I received the cable I placed it into the tank and tested it out before I let it with my fish. The cable was much longer than what I personally needed for the small tank, and so there was much still outside of the tank. After about an hour the entire cable was extremely hot. Hot enough to not be able to touch, so I unplugged it, waited for it to cool, and took it out of the tank.

It may be a good cable for tanks in which you can place the entire cable in, but if you are looking for something to hide in a small tank like I was, not sure it is the product to use if you can't place the entire cable in it.

Deep Blue Deluxe Aquarium Hood 24in

Deep Blue Deluxe Aquarium Hood 24inI bought this and it took what felt like forever to get to me. If I remember right it was one day late.

Upon receiving this, I noticed that the lid hinge was broken (which I figured I could just super glue), and the Blue LED Moonlight wouldn't work (which was the whole reason why I bought this.)

I contacted the sellers, Ozbo, by email and it took like 3 days to get an email back. after about two more days they apologized and said that I could just discard the broken one and they would send me a replacement, which they did. it took about another 2 weeks to get it, but I got it and it's NOT broken and appears to be working fine.

Even though the process of getting this item was a pain, I still think it's worth it. I really enjoy this product.

This is perfect for my 55 gal terrarium which houses fire belly toads and newts. Although I cant use the lid I just use the light and place it on my screen top. I tried with the lid but too high with the humidity. The lid part would be perfect for a regular aquarium setup. I love the nightlight. My frogs must think its the moon. Since they are more active at night ...I can actually see them moving around and "barking" with the nightlight on. I love this light!

Aquarium Fish Tank Biochemical Double Sponge Water Filter Air Pump Black

Aquarium Fish Tank Biochemical Double Sponge Water Filter Air Pump BlackSo... see how it says the dimensions are 4.72"/2.36"? That's the size of ONE sponge LOL. It's not clear so I thought it was the size of the entire filter. So you can imagine how large the entire thing is, around 6" wide, and 7" tall. I'm not disappointed though, as this gives me more filtration area. However, it would be good if the total size was mentioned so people won't buy this for a 2.5G and have it take up the entire tank.

The spout is able to be lengthened as with other sponge filters, and all parts are easily removeable for service and replacement. I will be modifying the "T" connection so only a single sponge will be used, as this takes up the entire side of a 10g tank. Other besides that, this product works as intended, and is the cheapest one out there.

Arrived faster then i thought it was going to.

Cleaned the water faster then other sponge filters that sit on the floor.

HYDRO-SPONGE FILTER V HS950 (125GAL)

HYDRO-SPONGE FILTER V HS950Most aquarium filters now use a motor to force water through some kind of filter pad which must be replaced at intervals. However, before there were reliably sealed electric motors, most home aquariums moved water using the "airlift" principle, in which a rising column of bubbles pulled water through the filtering material. This is an elegant and just about failsafe method. Debris in the tank cannot ever jam the external air pump which feeds the filter, and if electricity is interrupted, the filter cannot lose siphon, it simply starts bubbling again when power is restored to the air pump. Many fish love to play in the rising stream of bubbles.

Hydro Sponge filters, first marketed in the 1990's, are a more recent application of the airlift. Hydro Sponge V is intended for tanks up to 120 gallons. Made of dense, strong plastic with a weighted base which holds the sponge up away from the aquarium bottom, they dismantle easily for cleaning of the sponge. The pores within the sponge provides an enormous surface area for colonization by beneficial bacteria providing very thorough biological filtration. They can be powered by an air pump with or without an airstone (using an airstone will give finer bubbles and make less noise), or with an electric powerhead for those with larger tanks or who simply feel the need for more energetic water circulation.

It is difficult to imagine such a simple device working well. Surprisingly, they are excellent, and can be used as the only filter in the tank for many applications. I've used them on tanks sized from 10 gallons up to 75 gallons, always with good results. The local fish store where I shop has an expensive trickle filter for their dozens of tanks, and every single freshwater tank also has a Hyrdo Sponge or similar sponge filter as well. Apparantly the sponge is doing something which the trickle filter doesn't?

Maintainence is as simple as the filter. When you perform your periodic aquarium water change, (20% every week) save some of the old water in a bucket. Separate the top and bottom parts of the filter and remove the sponge from the tank. Squeeze it out in the bucket. See all the stuff which the sponge removed from the water? Reinstall the sponge and refill your tank. Go have dinner with the money you saved not purchasing replacement filter cartridges.

In sum, a clever and elegantly simple device which works very well.

I use this in my 90 gal discus tank

I have 2 of these to supplement my eheim 2028

My water is clear and the readings are perfect

I assumed these would be just a backup in the biofiltration dept.

Apparently, they do a large amount of mechanical filtration, as well.

I have one in each back corner and large amounts of debris settle back there.

Perfect for the frequent Siphoning discii :) require.

The reason these filters are so good is that they are safe for fish fry. I have never had a baby get stuck on it. But with other filters this can happen all to easy. A great filter for baby tanks for any type of fish.

I've used power filters for almost 40 years, and last year I replaced my Ehiem with two of these filters in a 55 gallon tank. Never again do you need an expensive filter, nor do you have to buy new pads or worry about a leak (my biggest worry with the Ehiem).

These Hydro are as good, or better than any power filter, and easier. Every few months, I rinse out the filter, and that's it! Just make sure you use tank water when cleaning filter, so you do not kill the good bacteria.

It's great for fry as well.

The only problem is that they are UGLY and take up a lot of space. I could have bought the smaller size, and I'm sure it would work just as well. I wish they would make them in green. They are so cheap, I would throw away the black ones and buy the green....

Want HYDRO-SPONGE FILTER V HS950 (125GAL) Discount?

can't really tell how well it works, when i lift the tube above the water level of the tank it doesn't seem to push water out of the tube when in theory it really should. strange.

however stuff does get stuck to it, especially at the top of the sponge so there must be suction, and it should be more than enough for the bacteria to get water movement.

I was extremely pleased with this product. It provides a lot of different sized openings for fish of any size to enter and hide. I have a 46 gallon bow front tank, and the size fits perfectly, allowing for room to put plants and other decorations. 1300 GPH Powerhead Aquarium Pump Wave Maker

1300 GPH Powerhead Aquarium Pump Wave MakerI have one on a 54 gallon corner aquarium and it can really move some water around, WOW! I only wish there was some way to reduce the amount of flow on these. I have it pointed a little above level to create surface agitation and it still moves the sand on the bottom of the tank creating dunes in the sand. My tank is 22" deep. In order to actually use it I took out the propeller and trimmed it down to a more reasonable flow rate, it was not too hard just make sure its equal on both sides. great product for the price.

I use two of these in my 46 gallon mixed reef. They alternate every 90 minutes and I know there are no dead spots in my tank! I actually had to position them in such a way that my live rock would diffuse some of the flow because it was moving too much of my sand bed. Great powerhead and you cant beat the price.

Aquarius Aq15005 Aquarius 5 Rounded 5-Gallon Aquarium Kit

Aquarius Aq15005 Aquarius 5 Rounded 5-Gallon Aquarium KitI have three of these for breeding ornamental shrimp. Got them for a great deal with a local fish store went under a little while ago. I notice there is no review, so here is my opinion.....

The tank:

The "Panaview" idea is a bit false. Because of the hard curve on the corners, it can be very difficult to see what is happening at the edges of the tank, a few inches from the acrylic. That said, for the most part, the flat front leads to clear views of what is inside, and if my shrimp are close to the wall, I can see them whether they are behind the curve or not.

The lid fits into a pair of hinges, but doesn't actually snap in. Makes it very easy to open, leave open, close, and best of all, remove easily for water changes and prevent it from overbalancing backward when aquarium is empty.

The one drawback to the lid is that there is enough room to hook the little hook for holding the filter over the back, and that's about it, unless you're going to do some modifying. Honestly, getting the cord for the heater I use through is a snug fit. This is good for, say, crabs, crayfish, and stronger shrimp that may attempt to go on 'walkabout', but it doesn't allow a lot of space to add additional items such as a sponge filter, airstone, etc. Without the filter in place, I can *just* fit a single airline and the heater cord through the hole. On the one single tank that I use all three, I have simply drilled an additional hole in the lid for the airline. Easy breezy--if you have a drill. That said, I don't anticipate most people attempting to add additional stuff beyond perhaps a filter. Keep in mind, I use it for invertebrates that can climb out--I have dwarf crays in one, and mini-crabs in with my cherry shrimp. If you have nothing that you're worried about getting out, there is a cut-out option for a HOB (hang on back) filter and heater (don't use an HOB heater on this, please! But they will leave large holes, and they don't, honestly, look very easy to remove. The tabs that hold the cutouts in place look quite strong. I have never attempted to remove them, and I can't imagine that I ever will. For my purposes, if I need an extra airline fed in, I'm just going to drill a tight fitting hole, which I suspect is less work anyway.

The lighting:

Their is a bank of nine white LED lights, and nine blue ones. They can be set to have either the white, the blue, or both in place. The light level is enough for lower light plants, such as java moss, java fern, dwarf lily, or most hygrophilia, but if you're thinking of making a nano or pico tank, you'll need to work on the lighting. (If you don't know what I'm talking about there, it's honestly not a concern....though....look it up, as it's a very fun hobby! XD)

I don't think that this tank is terribly aesthetic without the lid it comes with, as it has a lip similar to that on the critter keepers....I honestly don't know how to explain it, but basically, it's a hollow lip that I can fit my fingertips under. Looks better hidden.

The Filter;

I admit to not using this in any of my tanks, but for one. It is a submerged filter, with an open top, and decent sized intake vents. The water flow is also surprisingly strong from it. All said, it would be perfect for a betta (providing it's still hale and healthy...a weak or very old betta may get sucked up against the intake), or other smaller fish. Not so good with my mini-shrimp and other inverts that I keep in here. The entire design is quite open, and shrimp climbing in for the delicious detritus on the insert only to be sucked through the impeller is an all too realistic reality. Not to say that I haven't found use for these, however!!! I keep them in my tank of pre-aged, pre-cycled water that I use for tank changes, and use them for quiet and decent water movement to prevent stagnation. Generally, I've been using them more as a micro-powerhead than a filter. XD I've been pleased, as so far, they all continue to move water rapidly and well, but then, they also aren't really contending with any serious bioload--just that of a few cory's that tool around and help the water I use for water changes in my more delicate tanks age and get it matched perfectly, chemistry wise.

That's about it to this tank. Not a super high tech little setup, but if you're planning on keeping a few smaller, cool water fish (ie: white clouds), it'll work. Better yet, get yourself a sponge filter, a heater, and some shrimp! Not that I'm biased or anything. LOL

A random side note NOT related to this product, but very much related to fish keeping:

If you decide to keep A FEW small, tropical fish and pick up a heater....pick up a good one. Read the reviews. Heaters can kill your fish very quickly if they fail, not to mention cheap ones present a fire hazard. I state this because I once had a cheap hang on back heater literally melt through the wall of one of these tanks when it failed, to much loss of life, very sadly.. You get what you pay for!

I was really pleasantly surprised when I unpacked and set up this aquarium. Very easy! It's just the right size for smaller fish and looks great on a desk...or anywhere! The filter works very well and the lighting is nice. Highly recommend.

Update Aug. 30: Still highly pleased with the tank. Everything still works and the water is staying nice & clean with the included filter. Very happy!

Update: Oct. 24, 2012: Still really like the aquarium, but the on/off switch for the lights stopped working...the lights will only stay on...I have unplugged the light, which is fine as I have African-clawed frogs in the aquarium and they don't need extra lighting.

We decided to get a few fish and a small tank for our son for his 10th birthday and it has been everything we haoped it would for him and this tank has helped make it a great gift. The tank is small enough to fit on a dresser top, has a lighted cover, very clear plastic for viewing, and comes with a little filter so you have a wider option of fish you can house.

The first few weeks I had been complaining that the included filter was underpowered and didn't seem to be doing a good job keeping the tank clean, but I have since learned that the rocks I chose were the key problem and were effetively locking the gunk down in the bottom and it wasn't the filter's fault at all. I was using the larger decor rocks that are upwards of .75" each. Advice to those buying this tank, use the typical small rocks that come in the 2.5# bags and lok look large chunk kitty litter, that will be more accomodating with this filter.

I love the tank. It's a perfect fit to go right on top of my dresser. The lights look really good as well. There was a small crack where the lights are, but nothing worth fussing over. It still works perfectly fine. The filter was working great while I had it running, unfortunately it's too strong for my poor little beta fish. Betta's don't like currents as it is, so I think I'm going to switch over to a sponge filter. But besides that the product id great with an unbeatable price! (:

Exotic Environments Log Cavern with Plants Aquarium Ornament

Exotic Environments Log Cavern with Plants Aquarium OrnamentThis is a very attractive decoration. It's fits quite well with room to spare even in one of my 3 gallon Eclipse aquarium. Eclipse 3 Gallon Acrylic Aquarium System. The artificial foliage is in balance with the hollow log. I often find my Betta asleep in the log at night. The Otto cats love it too.

I did find one or two sharp edges inside the log that might cause an abrasion, but they are easily smoothed. Now, you don't have to worry about trying to anchor down artificial plants or trying to grow live plants that your fish keep uprooting.

In general, I am very pleased with this product. A few of the plants look a little less realistic than I would've liked, but not enough to detract from the rating, mainly because if you're buying this thing, you're accepting the fact that you're gonna have fake plants.

The log itself is painted with a very high attention to detail and looks great. The rock/sand base also looks great. The inside of the log isn't quite as nice, but it'll be dark anyway in a lighted tank and so you'll probably barely see it.

I suppose cleaning the gravel under the log could be an issue (it has an open bottom, which I like); not really a problem if you have cleaner shrimp.

The main reason why this decoration gets 5 stars despite a few flaws is that it's an excellent hiding place for fish and other aquarium inhabitants (such as shrimp). The 2 plants strategically placed at each opening of the log make sure big fish can't get in, but more importantly they make your smaller inhabitants feel secure (even if there aren't actually any big fish to be afraid of, as in my tank). Whether or not your fish or shrimp actually "need" a hiding spot, having one as good as this will make them significantly less stressed and more happy.

Considering the shipping, it's a reasonable price as well.

NOTE: There could be a few strands/strings of glue hanging off of it when you buy it new, make sure you pull these off before putting it in your tank.

Bigger than what I replaced but more is better than less and it cost less than smaller similar units -Hopping for a green free pond this year

Updated,

Installed on after redoing my pond and did not use right away but after the pond was setup for a month turned on the Clarifier and in about another 3 weeks my pond was completely green. Talked to local pond supplier and said something is wrong or glass may be dirty from use so I took it apart and the tube was broken and one pin was broke off inside the unit and one other was bent over and had green corrosion on them. The green lite was on making it look like it was working.

Emaile the vendor on a Sunday and they got back to me the next day and I sent them photos of the failed unit. They replied the next day and said they are sending out another unit because I was getting green water and you normally have to send the failed unit back to exchange for another but I had a bad situation now in the pond.

Recieved the replacement unit 2 days later WOW I was surprised and installed it the same day and when I turned on this unit the green lite was much brighter than the previous unit so this one is working perfectly.

3 Days later I now have clear water again. All I can say these guys are great they handled everything to my satisfaction and then some.

We had a now-discontinued model of a Laguna UV sterilizer for our koi pond for years. It worked like a charm at keeping our water very clear. Our pond receives direct sunlight throughout the day and, without the UV light, the water would green pretty quickly. Also, the smaller koi fish that we stocked the pond with many years ago are now 24"+ and the ever-increasing fish waste helps to feed an even higher algae content. Our original Laguna UV sterilizer stopped working a year ago and, since it was discontinued, we replaced it with a smaller version of this Laguna model. It turned out to be a complete waste of money. It was labeled to take care of ponds up to 3000 gallons (the same as our previous Laguna model), but it simply didn't do the job. Our pond spent a year in a periodic green haze.

I decided to upsize it, and went with this same type model for ponds up to 5000 gallons. So glad that we did. Springtime warming always produces the worst of the pea-soup-green water...the warmer weather is allowing more algae to grow, but the beneficial bacteria are not yet at their peak efficiency to deal with the fish waste that causes the algae acceleration. But, within a few days of installing this new 55-watt UV sterilizer, our water is crystal clear. It's SO nice to be able to see our gorgeous fish again!

As with the others, this Laguna model is easy to install. At approximately 4' in length, it's longer than the other ones we've installed. It can be mounted either horizontally or vertically using simple circular mounting brackets (included). We mounted ours horizontally on the lower edge of our decking (inconspicuously behind landscaping). The unit comes with 2 click-fit connectors for attaching to other connectors. Since this was replacing a like-model Laguna, our hosing from the in-pond pump to the sterilizer, as well as the hosing from the sterilizer to our bio-filter, still worked fine with this one. If this is a first time installation of a UV sterilizer, you will have to figure out your hosing and connector needs based on the other components of your pond's mechanical system.

The Laguna UV sterilizers have small LED lights that are supposed to tell you whether or not the unit is working. It was difficult to tell with our first 2 models. The LED light was so faint that you could only tell if it was on during total darkness. The LED on this new one is much better...plenty bright even in daytime. The sterilizer comes with a 32 foot power cord which makes it more convenient for distant placement. The Maximum Flow Rate is supposed to be 1300 GPH.

I do have a small piece of advice for those not previously acquainted with UV sterilizers. Unless you live in a region that is warm year-round (and where you need the UV light operating all year), remove the unit before winter and store it carefully until the following spring. The lightbulb replacements for these units are quite expensive ($60-80). We were replacing the bulbs annually until we finally wised up and brought the unit in over the winter. We can usually go 2-3 years before replacing bulbs now.

**UPDATE: Less than five weeks after installing, this UV sterilizer stopped working. This has been a learning experience for us to never buy a large-sized product that doesn't include return shipping. Even though the third-party seller accepted it as a return due to its early total malfunction, the lowest shipping cost to return the unit was nearly $70. Never again.

Tetra Pond UV Clarifiers Replacement Bulbs

Tetra UV bulb, 5-WattBought this to replace my bulb in koui pound. Went out after 2weeks. Not sure if it's the bulb or other problemsc not came loose in large box.box was beat up. Live in Hawaii. Better packaging would have helped. Good. Best price by far. The bad. Might have priced myself into stupid as its no longer working. Get what you pay for

Anticipated to get a store grade product under the brand of Tetra at such high price. However, it is a 3rd grade product that I have received and of course it is "Made in China". The light emission is poor, so does the result for killing algae in the pond. At this grade level, there are many others out there selling at much cheaper price. It is a total waste of money to get this at this price.

Finally a break from the sky-high prices of uv bulbs for our pond clarifier. This is the first time we have ordered online, and were thrilled to find it at a reasonable price. I don't know why retailers have to charge so much? But my beef with Amazon is how it came packaged... in a bubble wrap envelope. The bulb box was squished, but thankfully the bulb itself was not broken. CDs and books come in a hard cardboard shell. Wouldn't you think a fragile light bulb should be shipped this way too? Please change how you ship, Amazon!

Carib Sea ACS00370 South Sea Base Rock for Aquarium, 40-Pound

Carib Sea ACS00370 South Sea Base Rock for Aquarium, 40-PoundI used a box of this in my new reef tank. I seeded it with some live rock and now its got some color and looks great. After a couple of months you can barely tell what was dead rock and what was live rock. My nitrates have been zero for 6 months too! I've I ever set up another tank I'm getting a few more boxes of this stuff. My only complaint is that they pack it with foam peanuts, and they get stuck in the live rock nooks and crannies. I would always find little bits of foam in my tank for a few months after I put it in my tank. Very annoying.

Good value .. lots of charactor, great for any reef to add more base w/o spending a fortune on all live rock... Mixed 90 lbs with 20 lbs of live rock from LFS and should be developed in 6-8 weeks.. Very nice

Finnex 50-Watt Hang-On Digital Controller Aquarium Heater, Titanium Tube, 10 to 20-Gallon

Finnex 50-Watt Hang-On Digital Controller Aquarium Heater, Titanium Tube, 10 to 20-GallonActually, I'd give this 4.5 stars.

Keeps my 10 gallon tank within 1-2 degrees as advertised and seems sturdy enough to last a long time.

What I did not know from the product description and pictures on Amazon is that this unit also has a separate wired temperature sensor which also needs to be placed into the tank along with the heating element (but located far enough away from it so as not to be reading too high). So you actually have 3 pieces of equipment all connected together.

Also, the two suction cups on the heating element, while clinging to the glass with ease, tend to slide around with the gentlest of pressure. If you want to place your heating element just right you will have to be very careful not to move the cords or disturb anything that touches it.

Pros:

Solidly built

Keeps temp to within 2 degrees

No glass parts to crack

Separate sensor placed away from heater gives a more accurate reading

Digital readout of current temperature

High temperature safety shut-off feature

Cons:

Separate sensor is just another thing that will take up space in a small tank (albiet it is small itself)

Suction cups on heater slide on glass easily if disturbed

Main cord to heating element could be a bit longer

So far, this heater has been stable holding temps on my Eheim Aquastyle 9 tank (rimless design). Setting seems easy enough.

My only concern is that in my application the cable that goes into the tank for the heating unit itself is fairly thick and causes the glass lid for my particular tank to not sit flat. I've lost a couple of shrimp that climbed over the edge due to this. I'm in the process of creating a new top cover that will have a notch for the heater cable so that the cover can sit closer to the edge of the glass and hopefully avoid any more escapee issues.

I think the product could be slightly improved by using a flat power cable like the heater that I upgraded from used.

My situation is probably not common, so for most tanks this seems like a very good product.

its been workin great and very easy to use, heater element is shorter than expected, I know it only comes with a 6 month warranty so we see if it lasts past the mark

I really like this heater. Its very short so it will fit in most hob filters and be out of sight.

I also like that it has a digital programmable read out, which makes it much easier to read and set the temp.

If you need a small submersible heater this is it. :>)

This worked great -for as long as it worked. Suddenly after 6 months, it burned out: The middle of the heating element is now black. Since it has only a 180 day warranty, we were out of luck. the manufacturer offered to replace component parts of it for a fee -but we would have to ship the unit back to them and we couldn't leave the tank without a heater. So we replaced it with a $10 heater that has a two-year warranty, so that heater could go out three times in a year and we'd still come out comparitively ahead. I'm extremely disappointed in this unit and manufacturer.
