Aquarius OT1001 Betta Treasures 1-Gallon Coral Aquarium

Aquarius OT1001 Betta Treasures 1-Gallon Coral AquariumI had to return this item 2 times b/c the switch was broken each time. I got a refund since I wasn't going to be disappointed a third time. The item was supposed to be an Easter gift for my 18 month old son. Never again. We went to pet smart instead, which is what we should have done in the first place. This was a cool aquarium but a poor product...

There is no way to turn the light off, there is a socket for a plug but no adapter and the PLASTIC bowl has scratches all the way around it. I would give five bucks for this at a yard sale but at this point I want my money back and you can send this POS back to China. If you order one and it arrives with the word refund written under the top flap of the box you have been sent the one that I am sending back and I suggest you just send it back rather than trying to figure out how to repackage it. If it had a switch for the light I could overlook the scratched cheap plastic bowl but as it is, no such luck.

Lee's 10-Inch Tube, w/Cleaning Claw

Lee's 10-Inch Tube, w/Cleaning ClawI have the Lee's gravel vac. Which I love. It comes with this tube on the end. I needed to replace my 10in. tube. I thought this was the same exact thing. Mine has the cleaning claw to protect the fish, but mine was removeable. This one is NOT removeable. It's is attached and that is a drawback as far as I am concerned. I do not always want that on the end, and I was disappointed to find when it came that I couldnt take the cleaning claw off. I assumed it woudl be detachable since mine was, but I guess I shouldn't have assumed.

Cliffs and Caves Replica Aquarium Rocks

Cliffs and Caves Replica Aquarium RocksThe actual product was...um...not what I expected. It was green and very unatural looking. Kinda like a childs toy. I put it in my tank anyway and have it hidden behind some live plants but I wouldn't recommend this if you want something natural. Shipping was the quickest ever however. A+++ to seller.

I thought the color would be more natural looking but it has a greenish tint to it, but it still looks ok in the tank, just wanted a natural look, not a toy look.

First of all, we waited for awhile for this item to ship. Once we finally received it and opened the package, we were very disappointed. The plastic is rough with extremely sharp edges. We cannot use it for our fish aquarium at all for risk of injury. The item comes in several pieces and reminds me more of a cheap dollar store child's toy. Definitely not worth the 26 dollar price we paid, or the time we wasted waiting for it. We are now waiting for the seller to accept our request to have it returned.

These units are reminiscent of childhood and plastic dinosaurs and in no way look like the natural image that the company shows on the box. While this unit (and the small and large ones) are cheesy in one respect, they are useful for amphibians like small newts or African dwarf frogs that need to rest on their way up to the surface to breathe. It allows me to have a higher water level in their tank, which keeps the water cleaner for longer, while not stressing the amphibians out. They get a five because of the utility. I use them with fish too. My female bettas dive for refuge from one another when they have spats. However, amphibians like it best.

Hydro II Sponge Pro Filter - Up to 20 gallons

Hydro II Sponge Pro Filter - Up to 20 gallonsMost aquarium filters now use a motor to force water through some kind of filter pad which must be replaced at intervals. However, before there were reliably sealed electric motors, most home aquariums moved water using the "airlift" principle, in which a rising column of bubbles pulled water through the filtering material. This is an elegant and just about failsafe method. Debris in the tank cannot ever jam the external air pump which feeds the filter, and if electricity is interrupted, the filter cannot lose siphon, it simply starts bubbling again when power is restored to the air pump. Many fish love to play in the rising stream of bubbles.

Hydro Sponge filters, first marketed in the 1990's, are a more recent application of the airlift. Hydro Sponge II is intended for aquariums up to 20 gallons. Made of dense, strong plastic with a weighted base which holds the sponge up away from the aquarium bottom, they dismantle easily for cleaning of the sponge. The pores within the sponge provides an enormous surface area for colonization by beneficial bacteria providing very thorough biological filtration. They can be powered by an air pump with or without an airstone (using an airstone will give finer bubbles and make less noise), or with an electric powerhead for those with larger tanks or who simply feel the need for more energetic water movement.

It is difficult to imagine such a simple device working well. Surprisingly, they are excellent, and can be used as the only filter in the tank for many applications. I've used them on tanks sized from 10 gallons up to 75 gallons, always with good results. The local fish store where I shop has an expensive trickle filter for their dozens of tanks, and every single freshwater tank also has a Hyrdo Sponge or similar sponge filter as well. Apparantly the sponge is doing something which the trickle filter doesn't?

Maintainence is as simple as the filter. When you perform your periodic aquarium water change, (20% every week) save some of the old water in a bucket. Separate the top and bottom parts of the filter and remove the sponge from the tank. Squeeze it out in the bucket. See all the stuff which the sponge removed from the water? Reinstall the sponge and refill your tank. Go have dinner with the money you saved not purchasing replacement filter cartridges.

In sum, a clever and elegantly simple device which works very well.

I cannot understand why this product is so difficult to find in local big-box pet supply stores, except that it keeps you from returning to purchase replacement filters on a monthly basis, which incidentally can become quite expensive over time. A great money saving filter that works better than more expensive "power-filter" units you can buy off the shelf.

If you do a little online research you may find that the combination of this type of filter with a "power head" aerator will not only keep your aquarium cleaner and help your fish stay healthier, but it will also save you time and money as a result of its simple design. By merely rinsing the filter periodically, you will keep your aquarium cleaner without all the hassles of draining your aquarium regularly or buying replacement charcoal filter bags as is the case with popular "power filters" found in most big-box stores.

I have a small 10 gallon tank that I retrofitted with some 1 1/4" hose to make the Hydro II sponge filter (20 gal) fit properly. I should have bought the 10 gallon version that is not quite as tall. Now my tank stays cleaner, longer, and I am pleased not to have to drain my aquarium every ten days because of "power-filter" clogs or failure.

I have this hooked up as a prefilter to a bio wheel 100 HOB on a 10g FW tank that I'm cycling. It's great because I've noticed even thought the water was clear when i put it in it's not full of food that my cycling minnows can feed off of. There is lil to no flow restriction. I hope is stays that way. May change after time and buildup of bacteria and waste/food particles. Best part is that it's wash and go and saves my HOB's filter from getting clogged due to the sponges huge surface area.

I use these on my fry and grow out tanks. They work excellent and highly recommend them. I use the airstone inside for quieter operation.

I use this sponge filter as a secondary filter for my 10G hospital/breeding tank. I use it with a Hagen AquaClear Power Filter Mini 20 (100) The Aquaclear is turned off from time to time(new fry) but the sponge filter is constantly on. I use the sponge filter with and airstone and I have no problems. Now, I can't speak on how this operates as an "only filter" but for secondary needs it's great.

Exotic Environment Gila Monster Skull Aquarium Ornament, Small, 4-1/2-Inch by 3-Inch by 2-1/4-Inch

Exotic Environment Gila Monster Skull Aquarium Ornament, Small, 4-1/2-Inch by 3-Inch by 2-1/4-InchI put this in my fishtank a few days ago thinking it would make a nice little shrimp cave. The shrimp seem to like it okay but my betta loves it! He likes to swim through the eye holes and then just plop down in the center and stick his head out of the mouth. It's like a little doghouse for him :)

It's a nice quality tank ornament. The size indicated in the title is accurate. It's heavy enough to stay put without burying it in gravel. Also, although there are a lot of "teeth" on it the manufacturer has done a good job of ensuring they are all rounded and dull (so as not to snag any fins). And I love the way it looks in the tank! It also has lots of little dents in the top which I have read is good for trapping beneficial bacteria (and catching lots of little leftover food particles for the shrimp to eat). Not sure if it will get covered in algae though, I'll have to wait and see. Even if it does, I think that might just add to the look of it.

Overall I'm very happy with this purchase. It looks cool and makes my tank inhabitants happy. Can't ask for much more than that.

I have a very small (3gal) fresh water desktop aquarium and was having a hard time finding deco for my frogs to hide in that wasn't 'corny', I wanted a natural looking hiding place but everything was WAY too big! This little skull is perfect (and cool) my African Dwarf Frogs love crawling in and out of it's mouth. Good hiding place for little fish that big fish can't fit into.

When I first seen this item, I was not sure on buying it. I then just went around and bought it. After a few days after the purchase I thought this is so ugly, and I didn't want it anymore. I didn't even know which kind of animal it was. But when it got here the skull is actually kind of cute! It provides a nice area where your fish, shrimp or crayfish can hide. It actually fits in perfectly. I love this item now, and I would never return it.

Hydor ETH 200 In-Line External Heater 200w 5/8" hose - Original Eth 201

Hydor ETH 200 In-Line External Heater 200w 5/8' hose - Original Eth 201I have a tall 29 gallon that had a typical submersible "stick" heater in it. The problem inconsistent heat. No matter where you put that stick, the temperature in the tank will vary as you get further away from the stick, and will vary a lot from top to bottom. I had to set it to 82 degrees to get an average of 76, and the furthest corner was usually closer to 72.... that's a HUGE variance which is bad for the fish.

This heats ALL your water every drop passes through this heater (about 6 times an hour if you have adequate flow through your filter).

I put this in my output line, set it to 78, and within 1 hour got a reading of EXACTLY 78, no matter where I put the thermometer in the tank. I will never go back to stick heaters again.

HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!!!

Bought this heater for use w/ a Fluval 305 canister filter on a 45gal corner pentagram community tank. The old glass tube heater's thermostat seemed to stop working (maybe because I let the water level drop a bit low), and I came across this inline model while looking for a replacement.

First off, the heater is much larger than I expected. It was too long to install above the filter yet below the tank in my stand (while keeping the required vertical positioning), so I had to move the tank away from the wall in order to install it in-line on the return hose behind the tank. Since it's also pretty fat (much thicker than the hoses themselves), the tank now sits a few inches from the wall instead of almost right up against it. The Fluval 305 filter also uses the ribbed hoses, which I found out after purchasing the heater are not 5/8ths, but 3/4" themselves. A few posts on the net said connecting the ribbed hoses directly to the heater would result in leaks. I ended up buying a couple of the rubber Fluval hose ends, which just push on to the ends of the cut ribbed hose, and so far, no leaks.

Once installed, the heater seems to work well, but the temp setting on the dial doesn't match the 2 thermometers in the tank. The thermometers both read ~2 degrees higher than the dial. As long as this remains consisant, this isn't a big deal. The ambient temp in the house will be as low as 65, but the heater doesn't seem to have any trouble maintaining the tank at 78.

It is nice to be able to not have a glass tube heater showing in the tank, though. Makes for a cleaner looking setup.

My first fish was a little crazy and used to swim frantically around the tank banging into the walls. Turns out he smashed the glass heater and the rest (along with the fish) is history. Went to the "in-line" heater version after that and this heater works great. Use it in a 30 gallon, acrylic tank.

I bought one of these to use with a Fluval 306 canister filter and 50 gallon tank. Connecting it to the filter was not straight forward since Fluval uses ribbed hoses. I ended up using a clear 5/8" PVC hose from the filter to the intake of the heater and then used the rubber connector and the ribbed hose on the discharge to the tank. So far in nearly 6 months of use this has worked flawlessly with no leaks.

I can't say enough about how well the heater works as far as controlling the tank temperature. I have a digital thermometer and it never fluctuates more than +/.1 degrees no matter what the room temperature is. You do hear a slight click when the the heater turns on or off which means they use a mechanical relay to control the voltage to the heating element. I like this as most heaters use a solid state relay (think transistor) which is usually the reason heaters fail in the "on" state and fry the tank, SSR's almost always fail "on".

If you have a canister filter you can't go wrong with one of these heaters.

I have this installed on the output of a Fluval 206 canister filter. Keeps the turtle water at 80 degrees effortlessly. The outside of the unit does not get very warm, so it is not a problem having it rest against the aquarium background. The tank is a 55 gallon with about 40 gallons of water in it. I took about a foot of the black flexible Fluval tubing and put a rubber end on it with silicone, then covered that with heat shrink tubing. It attaches firmly to the compression fitting. I had a clip that slides over the tank rim, so attached the heater to that with a cable tie. It is very lightweight. Love it!

Exotic Environments Oriental Vase Aquarium Ornament

Exotic Environments Oriental Vase Aquarium OrnamentThis ornament has been in use for a few months now. I has shown no signs of wear or fading. It was a great addition to my 55 gallon goldfish aquarium

I sort of figured that the quality of this item was only going to be mediocre because other companies were selling this for 3-4 times the price. It is marked hand painted, but I think it must have been a toddler who painted it. The lines that would guide the "painters" that are embedded into the actual vase are very clear, but the paint itself looks like it was just slapped on, and doesn't come anywhere near being in the lines. I have even considered for aesthetic purposes buying an aquarium safe paint set in similar colors so I can redo it myself it is that bad. The only up side is that my fish really loves the multiple holes to swim in and out of. My advice, if you care how the item looks, spend a little extra and buy the more expensive one. May sound like a harsh review, but for someone who likes to actually look in their fish tank, it really takes away from the whole aquarium scene, and distracts me from looking at my beautiful fish because it stands out so much. Wish I would've spent a little more myself...may still do that, depending on the cost of the paint it may be cheaper. Either way, it won't be staying in the tank as it is.
