I am rating this 4 stars instead of because it didn't come with any instructions. I am a noob when it comes to Saltwater tanks. I bought some Nutri-Seawater from my LFS and when I tested it with this meter, it read 1.031. Surprised, I took the water and this unit back to the LFS. They tested the water with their meter (this exact model), and it read 1.028, still high but to be expected from Nutri-Seawater. The LFS guy explained the calibration process to me and calibrated my meter for me.In order to calibrate it, you test RO or distilled water, and use the screwdriver to set it to zero. The screw is under the little black cover in the middle. This IS NOT the refractometer you receive. Other reviews have said the same. What you get is Amazon's "Captive Purity Refractometer" sold by the same "sportswarehouse" company. If you order this refractometer you get the "Adjustable eyepiece, carrying case (soft), pipette and calibration screw driver included", as listed under the "Captive Purity" ad, not what's listed here. Bait and switch? Shame on you Amazon for allowing "sportswarehouse" to do this! I don't care if it works or not, I'm returning it on principle, it's not what's shown or advertised. (Prime = free shipping and returns)You drop some water on the end, look through the eyepiece, and twist until the line shows your specific gravity.I initially purchased a refractometer that used a brix scale, but after having problems with conversions from brix to SG I got this and gives extremely accurate SG readings. My fish and corals are doing great, and I can count on perfect water conditions now. Packaging was great, and shipping was super fast.very happy with this. sturdy construction and easy to read. mush faster to use and clean than either glass or swing arm hygrometer (and more accurate)
