Elite Battery Operated Air Pump - Elite A790

Elite Battery Operated Air Pump - Elite A790I purchased this item before a fishing trip to keep bait alive... 2 (cheap) D cell batteries and 3 and a half days later, this thing has been running constantly and still hasn't died!!! Talk about wow! Now I wish I hadn't bought so many batteries! :)

Product came on time and I rate it a B+. I ordered this item for our 20 gallon fish tank that is in our backyard. Makes the fish happy because oxygen is supplied through the pump. Great for a bigger fish aquarium.

I have a small, desktop tank that uses an air pump to power the water filter. This device is perfect for if the power goes out to continue to provide the filtration and aeration to the tank. I would highly recommend it as a back up to anyone with an aquarium.

Aquatop GH75 Aquarium Submersible Glass Heater, 75-Watt

Aquatop GH75 Aquarium Submersible Glass Heater, 75-WattI bought two of these and one of them works GREAT!! The other was put into my 55 gallon tank but can barely keep it to the correct temperature. There are visible burn marks on the inside of the thermometer after only 3 days of use. My suggestion is to use this in smaller tanks or to buy two of them if you are planning on using them in anything bigger than 25 gallons.

For the price this heater does the job. I like the temp control. You can tweek the temp up and down with a slight turn. Does not say shatter proof glass.

This heater is working wonders in my 15h. It heats well and consistently -I have two thermometers and they confirm that the water temperature is right where it needs to be. It's easily adjustable by a turn knob on the top which can be kept above the water line so you can always get to it. My fish are very happy and healthy. =]

KollerCraft AQUARIUS AquaView 360 Aquarium Kit with LED Light - 2-Gallon

KollerCraft AQUARIUS AquaView 360 Aquarium Kit with LED Light - 2-GallonI really like this little tank. I've just finished setting it up and haven't any fish in it yet, but the tank itself is a little beauty! The lid is easy to remove if you put you finger back behind where the little cut-out for the air hose goes. However there is a little hole at the front of the lid that I think I can drop food in when I feed my little critters so I won't have to be removing the lid that much. I removed one of the perforated areas in the back of the lid (there are two of them) so the top of the little 25w heater can poke out. The color variations are a delight and I'm really pleased I went ahead and purchased this.

EDIT!!!! My tank has been set up now for almost a week. My beta is in there and happy, but, please do not buy this tank. The other reviews that mentioned the faulty light are correct. The light is now shorting out! There is water in the light. The light changes color on it's own, then the light will totally shut off, then back on, then different colors, then off again. Finally I just took the light out and will buy a new tank.

Please note, Amazon was great and tried to help with this situation. They offered a replacement, but I don't want the same tank. They offered a refund if I send the tank back, they have tried in every way possible to rectify this situation, so again, I'm happy I shop on Amazon. But please do not buy this tank, I believe it's dangerous. Water and electricity do not mix well!

The tank is just as advertised. My betta LOVES it! In his half gallon enclosure he was just sitting at the bottom all the time with his fins folded up. In this one, he's always on the move and strutting his stuff. Its really nice to look at and the different lighting modes are neat too. There's no filter so keep an eye on ammonia levels!

UPDATE: I am sorry to say I have to downgrade my initial review. I originally gave this 5 stars but now I cannot. The hood light is the worst design I have ever seen. Its is not remotely waterproof and after 2 months, not only did the nuts and bolts which hold it together rust and break apart, but water can easily get inside, just from minor spatting from the air bubbler. I noticed that the lights were flickering, so I took a look. The unit practically fell apart in my hand due to corroded bolts. There was water inside the bulb assembly. No gaskets or sealed electronics of any sort. Portions of the printed circuit board had its insulation burned away due to arcing. Being somewhat savvy, I was able to repair it, but then had to put a clear plastic condom over it to keep it dry. Just a terrible design.

I just want to share my method for keeping water out of the light. Use petroleum jelly on the seams of the plastic part of the light exposed to water. It's not an accident your lights start to do wierd things. water will get in there if you dont waterproof it. I have a three gallon and a two gallon on the way. They are cool little tanks.

Although the description would lead you to believe it is filtered, it is NOT and I may have killed my betta because I thought it was. The air pump does create a suction that pulls debris under the undergravel plate so it looks clean. The problem is that all that left over food and poop sit there, trapped under the aquarium bottom plate, polluting the water and increasing the nitrates to toxic levels. You can't suction it out easily, you have to pull everything out of the aquarium to do a full weekly water change. I didn't realize this until my fish very suddenly developed fin rot for no apparent reason. I had been doing 25% water changes biweekly but apparently I wasn't even touching the debris that had collected. Now, in trying to treat the fin rot by doing 100% daily water changes, I might have killed my fish by damaging his swim bladder trying to net him in this tank. It is round, which means a square net will not form to the sides to easily net the fish without damage or over-stressing him. It takes a lot of work to net him.

The tank looks cool and we read all reviews before purchasing but thought we would try it anyway. As mentioned in most every review, within the first week there was condensation on the inside of the lighting tube so it was only a matter of time before it shorted out. One review mentioned putting petroleum jelly on the seams of the light, so I dried out the light and did this. It seems to work wonders for keeping condensation out, but I've found that it needs to be wiped down and redone every few weeks.

Another problem is that the tank scratches really easily. After the first full water change, when I pulled everything out, there were scratches everywhere from smooth rounded marbles and paper towel.

Something else to consider if you have a betta, the current from the bubbler is really strong. I had to not only buy a valve for the air hose but also stuff a piece of aquarium sponge down the center tube to keep a somewhat smooth breathing surface for him. If we keep this tank, we are leaving the bottom plate and center tube and bubbler out of it. I will try to find a true filter to fit the inside to keep the water clean. It would be a neat tank if they fix some of the major problems, but there is no excuse for leading people to believe it's filtered. Knowing what I now know, I would not purchase it again.

Aquatop IPF-305 Aquarium Internal Filter

Aquatop IPF-305 Aquarium Internal FilterI ordered these filters to assist during my weekly cleaning of a turtle tank. My canister filter does a great job of keeping the water clear but during water changes and filter maintainence, the water becomes really cloudy and dirty when all the dirt and grime that settles on the rocks and sand is stirred around.

These filters are incredible! Firstly, they come with various adapters that make them useful in many aquarium situations AND the flow rate is adjustable. Secondly, and most importantly, they work great. I replaced the filter media supplied by Aquatop with a slightly more dense sponge material (the sponge included with the filter is too porous in my opinion) and they work perfectly. I could not believe that my turtle tank was crystal clear within 30 minutes of a water change. Usually, it takes 2-3 hours with my having to stir the water repeatedly so sediment can be suspended in the water and flow through the canister filter.

Needless to say I ordered 2 more of these, just to keep around. Excellent filter with excellent flow.

Poor quality. I know why it is 20 dollars and has only one review. The power was weak. Didn't stand up to my 40 gallons, even though it says up to 100

WaterWonders Cube Aquarium Kit - 1 1/2 GallonI had this tank with a betta and a gold mystery snail in it. Its very cheap and unfortunatly the LEDs arent bright at all. I will also say for the size of the tank the filter is rather large and not easy to hide behind decor without comprimising swimming room. If you are a serious fish enthusist who likes quality this isnt for you. It is cheap and it looks cheap. If its going to sit on your son/daughters desk its not a bad deal for the price. Tetra Pond Tubing

TetraPond Tubing, Corrugated, 1 Inch x 20 FeetUpdate after using for 18 months: This product works well at first then can develop pin-hole leaks in random places. It's easy to work with due to its high flexibility but difficult to seal with clamps due to the spiral reinforcement. That said, with enough fiddling you can cure the clamping problem but no amount of tweaking can stop the leaks from developing. I kept cutting out leaking parts but now I'll replace with vinyl tubing. I gave this product 5 stars 18 months ago and it's fine if you don't mind the constant maintenance. This is the exact same brand-name product you can buy in a store--same quality but about half the price at good old Amazon.

Flexibility is key for this product along with price. Both offer an excellent value, pleased with my purchase. Thank you!

Seachem Neutral Regulator 250gram

Seachem Neutral Regulator 250gramAs far as keeping the pH in your aquarium at 7.0 this product works great if used according to the directions. It claims to remove chlorine, chloramine and ammonia with some kind of "conditioning agents" and this may very well be true but if you rely on chemical means to remove ammonia as opposed to doing water changes you are minimally asking for stressed fishes if not sick or dead eventually. In any case, the downfall to this product is that it is made up of phosphate salts, which as you add this product to your tank it causes the phosphates (PO4) to build in concentration. High levels of PO4 in your aquarium is not what you want because it can and will cause algae blooms beyond your control. Ideally, PO4 levels in your tank should be zero to very low levels that can't be detected with colorimetric test kits. If you have algae problems in your tank I highly recommend investing in a PO4 test kit. You must do a water change to get rid of phosphates, don't rely on any product to remove PO4 unless you have a reef tank (salt water) and need to remove low levels!

As far as keeping your pH at neutral you would also make life much easier by investing in a pH pen (i.e. Waterproof pH Tester; ~$40-$100) and the calibration solutions for it. Use liquid pH down (API brand) and you can use store bought baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate; NaHCO3; Arm and Hammer brand fine...cheap too!) to bring your pH up; however, you may still want some liquid pH up too. The NaHCO3 will increase your pH and carbonate hardness (Alkalinity) helping to stabilize your pH as the phosphate buffers do in Seachem's Neutral Regulator WITHOUT the PO4! Turn your pH pen on and take the pH of your tank while you add pH up or down until you increase or decrease the pH by no more than 0.2 pH units. In other words, if your pH is 6.4 and you want to be at 6.9 increase it from 6.4 to 6.6 the first day. Then the next day go from 6.6 to 6.8 etc. My experience is that in the above example you'll find that the pH of 6.6 you set the day before will drop by the following day so just work your way up incrementally. This is because the organisms in your aquarium utilize the carbonate. Also get yourself a hardness test kit too (API brand) that gives you general and carbonate hardness and follow directions for adjusting to levels suitable for your fishes. Incidentally, Drs. Axelrod's and Burgess's fresh and marine atlases, respectively, provide this information for numerous fishes. I know this sounds complicated but the reality is this is the proper way to maintain a fish tank. It's a hobby and should be fun to do! Dedicate some time to caring for the water quality and you'll have much healthier, vibrant and happy fishes!

I purchased this product for my 20 gallon freshwater aquarium. My aquarium had been neglected for some time, and the nitrate levels were over 200ppm, GH over 400, and a KH that would hardly ready anything on the test strip. I added an incorrect buffer (too much baking soda) and shot my pH from 6.6 to 8.4, KH went to 300ppm. I need to get these numbers under control.

I did several water changes and my GH would only show a slight drop and my KH was not moving. My nitrate levels did decrease with better maintenance of the aquarium.

Over the course of 5 days I added 7 teaspoons of Seachem Neutral Regulator. The first day the water turned cloudy and this continued for 2 days. On the 3rd day, I added some AP Crystal Clear water clarifier, which caused the parcipitated calcium and magnesium to clump up and be captured by my HOB filter (AquaClear 50 with pre-filter sponge, biomax, matrix, and foam insert). Each day the pH started to decrease.

12-12-11

pH: 8.4.

Ammonia: 0ppm.

Nitrate: 60ppm.

Nitrite: 0ppm.

GH: 425ppm.

KH: 260ppm.

After adding Seachem Neutral Regulator from 12-16-11 to 12-21-11 (7 teaspoons total and no water changes):

pH: 7.6.

Ammonia: 0ppm.

Nitrate: 0ppm.

Nitrite: 0ppm.

GH: 120ppm.

KH: 120ppm.

Seachem Neutral Regulator softens water, neutralizes ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite.

20 gallon high tank, with undergravel filter, and an old penguin biowheel 100 (upgraded to AquaClear 50 on 11-25-2011). Aquarium has been operating for just under 5 years.

1mature angelfish.

4albino cory catfish.

3guppies.

4platies.

5ghost shrimp.

Several ramshorn snails.

The product does what it says it will do. Although I am currently only at a pH of 7.6, this product is trying to overcome a carbonate based buffer that wants to keep my pH at a high level (8.4). Seachem Neutral Regulator is a phosphate based buffer and had clearly done its job by reducing the pH, GH, and KH.

I would buy this product again and recommend it to others. Please keep in mind that a phosphate based buffer can cause algae growth if planted aquariums. My aquarium is planted, but with plants that do well in low light. Higher light levels can lead to unwanted algae growth (as indicated by the manufacturer).

I'm essentially going to copy my review for Acid Regulator in this space, because in my experience, the two products are linked I use them together.

Maybe I shouldn't be surprised as to how effective, after all Seachem is a company worth its salt, but I haven't had success with all of their products (Acid Buffer, PH Alert) but I have adored Prime, Flourish and now the "Regulator" series.

Anyway, when used in conjunction with Acid Regulator, the efficacy is amazing. In buffered water the results are extremely predictable. I keep Clown Loaches, Neon Tetras, Albino BN Plecs, and Cories, so soft, slightly acidic water is needed. Finally, a product that helps me get there, and stay there.

I brought the pH down from an enormous 8.0 to 6.8 over the course of 6 weeks (so as to not shock the fish). I have let it lie for 1 week since and the pH is stable. I had to do a little improvising... since my initial pH was so high, and my tap water so unbuffered, I needed more than the recommended dose. I had to add a small amount almost every day after the initial dose, and monitor the results closely with a pH liquid test. (For this I chose API's tests the pH tests are accurate). I would take 4 test tubes, and keep up to 4 previous measurements over the days, so I could see the subtle changes in pH. Trust me, you almost have to do this to tell the difference between, for example, 7.6 and 7.4 on the low pH scale.

Anyway, ever since achieving the target pH of 6.8, I don't need to add Regulator all the time anymore, just when doing a water change. I did one today, added the 1:1 dose of Neutral Reg to Acid Reg and guess what? My pH stayed exactly at 6.8. Awesome.

Ever since getting the pH to where it needed to be, my fish have thrived. They are active, lively, eating well, and growing.

Neutral Regulator works, and it WILL bring your pH to 7, and it WILL buffer your water, even if it softens it, and keep your pH stable.

I dock a star because it's expensive, and because it wasn't particularly intuitive how to use it for proper results. But it wasn't rocket science either, just basic science. :)

I bought this when I had just moved to a new place. I hadn't fully tested the water but I knew the pH was way too high. Unfortunately this regulator didn't really work but it was because my carbonate levels were out of control. If pH is your only issue then this stuff will probably be great for you. Just make sure you test your water first.

Exotic Environments Human Skull Aquarium Ornament, 5-Inch by 7-1/2-Inch by 6-Inch

Exotic Environments Human Skull Aquarium Ornament, 5-Inch by 7-1/2-Inch by 6-InchMaybe I missed the part of the product description that says it's made for an aquarium, but that's what the box it comes in says. It looks and feels like cheap plastic (which it is) and there's nothing realistic about it, unless looking at it from afar. It's smaller than I expected and when I opened the box it became immediately evident to me that the picture they are using here to sell it is heavily photoshoped to make it look better (in other words: false advertising).

::EDIT:: I need to mention that in the weeks following the above (original) review the seller changed two very important aspects of this product display.

1)They added the words "aquarium ornament" to the title. When I bought this the title was "Life Size Realistic Human Skull" not "Exotic Environments Human Skull Aquarium Ornament . . ."

2) They have replaced the picture with a much more realistic (to what you will get) picture. When I bought this and wrote the review the picture was very different and they had made it look very authentic to a real human skull.

I'm glad they have changed these two things, but it's sad that a customer had to call them out and reveal their false advertising in order for this to happen. Basically, the way this is displayed here now is much closer to what you will actually get.

When I opened the box my first thought was that it looked great but within one week the paint had began to peel. Needless to say that peeling paint isn't good for fish...

Red Sea Fish Pharm ARE50184 Deluxe Prizm Upgrade Kit Protein Skimmer for Aquarium

Red Sea Fish Pharm ARE50184 Deluxe Prizm Upgrade Kit Protein Skimmer for AquariumFirst I have a Fish only live rock marine aquarium. 30 gallon. Ive got a fluval 304 canister filter and the prism skimmer. I bought this skimmer attachment because I wanted to remove the "scum" film from the top of the water. The item says it's a surface skimmer. I think that is stretching the definition of a surface skimmer. It draws water from the top inch of the aqauarium but it would be very difficult to get it to "skim" the surface all the time without constant adjustment. The problem is the height adjustment is mechanical. You have to move a lever and adjust the height of the surface skimmer, so after adjusting the surface skimmer to get a slight "waterfall effect" so that it is "skimming" the surface all is good until water evaporates and now not enough water is falling into the surface skimmer cup to keep up with the pump. I would have to top off the water in the tank and re adjust the surface skimmer cup everyday to get a true "Surface skim". I guess I will adjust it when I have time once a week to get the scum off the surface and then lower it the rest of the time so it will not starve itself of water when evaporation happens. It would be really nice if it had some type of flotation on it that would let the skimmer cup constantly adjust to the water level. It would be a 6 star if that was the case. Other than the adjustment issue. It seems to be built good and it fit onto the skimmer with no problem. I'm going to keep it and use it. I was not impressed with the options for surface skimmer intakes for the canister filter. They all stuck to the side of the aquarium with suction cups and well I have good luck with suction cups for about a week.

Fluval G3 Tri-EX Cartridge

Fluval G3 Tri-EX CartridgeThis filter does what it says. Before using this, however, you should first run the Phosphate and the Nitrate filters for a day each. This brings the levels down to "manageable" levels without using up the Tri X. Remove them and store for later use in an emergency situation. The Tri X will then maintain the levels for a long time. Little Giant Rubber Trough-O-Matic® Stock Tank Float Valve TM825

Little Giant Rubber Trough-O-Matic® Stock Tank Float Valve TM825We bought one of these about 6 months ago and I spent a couple of dollars on PVC pipe and fittings to make it approximately the same gadget that is sold here on Amazon for $105.00 as a pool leveler. It has worked very well to keep our pool at the desired level. I hold the PVC frame down to the pool deck with a small concrete paver. If you do make your own pool leveler, spend a bit of time cutting your PVC lengths to match the level you want to maintain. This leveler has bracket slots through which heavy duty, UV resistant cable ties can be inserted and cinched down securely to the PVC pipe. I would then recommend locking down all cable tie, PVC and leveler contact points with cyanoacrylate(Crazy)glue for a very secure package. Note that this device is also available in a metal version. If you have kids or animals running around your pool, I'd recommend the metal one, as I could see where the plastic model might break at the hose attachment if it is knocked around too much. At any rate, a few minutes spent building a PVC pool bracket will save about $94...not bad. You can see photos of the $105 dollar version by Staypoolizer here:

http://www.amazon.com/IA851025-Staypoollizer-Premium-Automatic-Leveler/dp/B004CO5TI8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1354224141&sr=8-1&keywords=swimming+pool+leveler

As should be obvious, it is very easy to reproduce this simple PVC frame. In actual use, the leveler will match pool evaporation and maintain a precise level by adding very small amounts of water continuously. If you put your ear down to it, you will hear a slight hiss as it maintains an equilibrium of water.

Had this model in my little garden pond for a couple of years.

Very primitive assembly, was leaking very early on and the housing disintegrated quickly.

I purchased this for a automatic pool filler build. The valve it's self looks to be a fairly sturdy unit. It looks like the same float valve used on a similar item that sells for 114.00 elsewhere on Amazon. I made a right angle frame-holder with a tee at the end out of Schedule 40 3/4" PVC pipe. I then made a holder for the valve out of a 4 way cross piece with 2 shorter lengths of pipe also out of 3/4" PVC. I used a rat tail file to open up the vertical part of the cross piece until it would slide up & down on the down tube. I left the fit snug enough stay in place. I mounted the valve on the arms of the cross piece with 1/4" x 2" stainless steel bolts. It's not necessary but I added a 45 degree garden hose adapter to the top of the tank to reduce stress in this area and make it easier to hook up. I spent about 20 dollars for the parts including 5 dollars for the hose adapter. Build time was about an hour. If you need glue and primer for the PVC pipe figure on another 5-10 dollars. This means for a total cost of 35 to 45 dollars you can build an automatic pool filler that is comparable to a unit selling for over twice as much. I am attaching some photos of the one I built. I have an old in-ground pool with a fiberglass liner. It has a raised lip around it that required the use of a cinder block top stone but most folks probably won't have this problem.....

I purchased this to provide a ready to supply refill for a water trough in a pasture. It works as described. Seems well built although I would be interested in a metal one later.
