biOrb Silk Plant Pack Medium, Purple/Green, 2 Pack

biOrb Silk Plant Pack Medium, Purple/Green, 2 PackThese BiOrb plants are nicely sized for medium tanks. Both are are relatively the same size, (the purple one is larger, though, which is kinda ironic because the picture show the purple on smaller.) They are almost too tall for my 3.9 gal/15 L vertical tank. (I don't own a BiOrb.) I recommend this for 5 gallon tanks and up. Good quality, semi-unrealistic up close, though. When I first got them I was disappointed because they looked very fake, but after I rinsed them and put them in my tank they looked pretty good. My female Betta loves to hide in them, as she is a shy fish. The bases look a little awkward, unless you cover it with a lot of rocks or you've got lots of gravel.

Sometimes with these Biorb plants it's hard to figure out the sizes from the pictures. These medium silk plants are roughly the same size as each other even though the photo makes the purple one look smaller.

I have a small tank (3 gal) and these plants fit perfectly in it. It's only about 12in tall but they fit great and float around gracefully near the surface of the water. My betta really seems to like swimming through them and resting on the leaves. They look pretty realistic in the tank to boot. The colors aren't so bright that they look fake. I also like the anchors. They did a good job making them look realistic as well. My gravel covers most of the base but a small section of it shows so I'm glad they paid attention to that part too. It just looks like a rock.

Like others have mentioned, the picture is somewhat deceiving. The purplish plant is really basically the same size as the green one so if you're looking for two different length plants, you're going to be dissappointed.

Overall I really like these. They look great in the tank and my fish is a fan also. Can't do much better than that :)

I decided to buy some fake plants for my aquarium since most live plants have a hard time living in the water I have coming out of my tap. These plants were very vibrant in color which only gets better once they're in the tank. And I LOVE the weights on the bottom they stay in place and don't disturb the substrate very much since it's nicely rounded. I only hope they come out with other varieties of plants so I can buy more! If you want any for the background of your tank however I'd definitely recommend getting the largest size, as the medium wasn't as tall as I'd hoped.

They look absolutely stunning in my aquarium. I've had people ask if they were real. You can't tell at all they are fake plants. Highly recommend!

Hydor 50w Hydrokable Substrate Heater, 20' - for Aquariums 16-33 gal

Hydor 50w Hydrokable Substrate Heater, 20' - for Aquariums 16-33 galUPDATE:

The cable just stopped heating a few weeks ago. If they sent me a free replacement, I wouldn't take it, because it's not worth enough to pay me for the 10 or so hours it would take to lift 30 lbs of sand and all the landscaping out of my tank to replace this thing. *Sad*

OLD REVIEW:

The cable is heating my tank nicely, under a sand bed. I'm using it with a thermostat.

The installation was a bit alarming, because the suction cups only stayed on for 5 minutes at first. Then I reset them 3-5 times, and they stayed on long enough to cover the cable with the sand. I'm pretty sure they're stuck in place just fine under the sand, but I would not use them without substrate or with easily movable one.

Not sure if it's absolutely necessary, and a lot more expensive than the typical heater, but with the Hydor thermostat it works great !!

Buy Hydor 50w Hydrokable Substrate Heater, 20' - for Aquariums 16-33 gal Now

Product appears to work well, but I purchased it for a little 6 gallon tank that will be housing small jellyfish. When I received the cable I placed it into the tank and tested it out before I let it with my fish. The cable was much longer than what I personally needed for the small tank, and so there was much still outside of the tank. After about an hour the entire cable was extremely hot. Hot enough to not be able to touch, so I unplugged it, waited for it to cool, and took it out of the tank.

It may be a good cable for tanks in which you can place the entire cable in, but if you are looking for something to hide in a small tank like I was, not sure it is the product to use if you can't place the entire cable in it.

Zilla 11897 Fresh Air Screen Cover, 12-Inch by 30-Inch

Zilla 11897 Fresh Air Screen Cover, 12-Inch by 30-InchWe got his to replace our first one. We adopted a 6 month old kitten, and when he saw the crickets roaming through our beardie's terrarium, he couldn't resist getting into it to catch them. So when we caught him in the terrarium with our beardie, we realized the heat lamp had burned the screen and welded it to the terrarium. We got a second screen, but realized that in order for us to handle our lizard, we needed to wait for the heat lamp to cool off for 10-15 minutes. If you're impatient like me, i would just the heat lamp down, and it inevitably caused it to burn out for a more-than-gentle handle. We then purchased a 2 sided screen. One side rests, so you don't need to move the heat lamps, and the other side opens so you have easy access to your critter. Again, this is a good screen, nice quality, but it won't work so well if you plan to handle a desert pet.

This product works great. Perfect fit, has holes on sides for mounting lighting or use without lighting. Provides good ventalation.

The screen itself seems like a good screen, It looks like exactly what I need. I would have given it 5 starts, but it arrived slightly damaged. There is about an inch-long line where it was bent up, as if it was put on top of the edge of something, and parts of that are broken. Lilly has climbed out of her tank and hidden herself in my apartment 4 times already so it is really frustrating that I had to exchange this, but I'm glad they ship the replacement out right away and it will be here in a couple days. Until then, my duct tape barrier will have to stay

DrTim's Aquatics One & Only Live Nitrifying Bacteria for Cycling Aquaria

DrTim's Aquatics One & Only Live Nitrifying Bacteria for Cycling Aquaria, Fresh Water, 2-OunceStarted 3 29 gallon tanks for a research project in biology.

Tank 1: Plain Water with ammonium chloride as ammonia source.

Tank 2: APIs Quick Start with ammonium chloride as ammonia source.

Tank 3: DrTim's One & Only with ammonium chloride as ammonia source.

Ammonium Chloride was purchased from Amazon (DrTim's Ammonium Chloride Solution for Fish-less Cycling). Each tank was prepared with a standard dechlorinator (It is important not to use any product that binds or "locks" ammonia, as it is required for the cycle to progress). Water was allowed to rest for 24 hours, filters and heaters running, temps set to 80.5F, 30 LBS of standard gravel in each tank. Each tank received an initial dose of ammonium chloride of 29 drops (one drop per gallon), which raised ammonia to ~2.0 PPM.

Caveats: If you use an API test kit, you will likely see about half the expected ammonia concentration. The test is not accurate at low levels, and does not measure the type of source used as well as other master kits. Be concise with the dosing and you are fine. You can use a Nutrifin NH3/NH4 test or other high grade ammonia detection kit that measures NH3 and NH4. Do not adjust water parameters or add water for several days. If you must adjust water parameters, do so slowly. Water should only be added if it has been allowed to rest after 24 hours once treated with dechlorinator.

Results at 6 days:

Tank 1: Barely detectable amount of ammonia reduction, zero nitrites, zero nitrates.

Tank 2: Some reduction in ammonia, zero nitrites, ~20PPM nitrates.

Tank 3: .50 PPM Ammonia, zero nitrites, 50 PPM nitrates

Tank 3 has had one water change already, and is ready for the second due to rising nitrates. It is processing enough ammonia at this point to equal ~11 inches worth of fish. Ammonia has been added to this tank daily to sustain the cycle, as fish were never going to be introduced. I will be adding fish to this tank however, and reducing ammonium chloride dosing. Decided to keep this tank.

Myth 1: There are many posts on the Internet about fish-less cycling. Many of which suggest the use of off-the-shelf ammonia that you find in your local grocery or hardware stores. While some of these sources might be safe, most are not. The ammonium chloride is cheap, and will cycle many, many tanks. Consumers are generally unaware of the fact that not all ingredients need to be listed on products not intended for human consumption. Therefore, they see water and ammonia listed on a label and assume there is no surfactant in the off-the-shelf product. This is simply not the case. Most of these products do in fact contain other ingredients that are not safe for fish, and will destroy the bacteria needed for the aquarium cycle. This can be seen in one of the other reviews. The result was, the tank did not cycle as anticipated. If you want good results and have gone to the expense of purchasing a bacterial additive, spend the extra couple of dollars and get a pure source of ammonia.

Myth 2: Some postings on the Internet suggest that these products use terrestrial strains of bacteria. All nitrifying bacteria need soil or other surface. Therefore, all can be considered terrestrial. They are commonly found on the bottom of lakes and streams. Our filters and substrate mimic this environment. While evidence in my experiment suggests that not all products are created equal, some products do work -and work exceptionally well.

Myth 3: The cycle will crash because it isn't the right bacteria. Fact: If the bacteria were unable to sustain, we would not see the substantial growth noted in tank 3. In order for the ammonia to be processes and nitrite to nitrate, a large colony has to exist. Once these bacteria undergo binary fission (how they multiply), there is no logical argument that would support this cycle failing. If you have an environment where they will multiply, that will continue until there is no food source. Any crashing would be the result of that food source not being adequate for the colony. Another possible source of crashing, high nitrates (more than 50-75 PPM) as this will kill the bacteria. It is also possible that once the cycle begins to establish, that the consumer adds too many fish before the colony is large enough to sustain.

If you opt for fish-less cycling, use a pure source of ammonia (ammonium chloride). If you opt for fish-in, make sure you do not use an ammonia binding product to dechlorinate the water. Let the water rest for a full 24 hours before you add fish and the product. You may test for ammonia/nitrite/nitrate -but only adjust your parameters if the results show >2.0PPM Ammonia or >50PPM Nitrate. Other than that, leave it alone for at least a week. If you do need to reduce any of the parameters via a water change (25%), fill your bucket the day before and add your standard dechlorinator to the water and let it rest for a complete 24 hours before adding to the tank. Keep your filters wet at all times (bacteria will die).

I consider this product a 5-star purchase. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

This stuff worked for me just as advertised. Levels set in quickly and stabilized. I put fish in quickly and had no problems at all.

I had something strange happen during a new tank set up. I used old gravel and it caused an ammonia spike. I did wash it and even used bleach but after farther testing with some left over it still released ammonia's into the water. I've been a fish keep for years and never had this happen before. I used One & Only and it helped a bunch. Still took a little while but worked great. Two days after setting up this tank my ammonia was off the chart. I ordered One & Only about 2 weeks after set up and in 2 weeks my tank was completely cycled.

The product was very helpful, it instantly cycled my 10 gallon fish tank within a week. Prior to that, I had waited for over a month to cycle my new tank, and as result of such waiting game, I was becoming very disenchanted with fish keeping. The trick was simple, add ammonia chloride as food source for the bottled nitrifying bacteria to eat. Also, make sure you don't add too many fishes all at once because you new tank bacterias may not break the high intensity of ammonia. Slowly, and gradually start adding fish in you tank. Live plants are also conducive, but I would rather opt for moss balls because it is helpful algae that keeps your water crystal clear.

I had doubts as to the ability of Dr Tim's (or any other products) claims. However, after my first use I'm a believer Five Stars. I was suddenly placed in a bind by my father-in-law brought over a peanut butter sized jar full of young guppies for my two year old daughter. She absolutely loved the fish and couldn't stop talking about them, so I had to get a tank together and fast. We rushed off to the store, and in no time had nearly $300 in tank and supplies for our FREE guppies. With great haste I assembled a 10 gallon tank, with lots of live plants and rock features. Even with an oversize filter running the water was too toxic, and would lead to the demise of the young guppies. A close friend, with a nice saltwater tank suggested Dr. Tim's One and Only. While guppies are a hardy fish I had to make the water safer. The very first treatment brought reduced the Nitrite and Nitrate levels from dangerously high to safe in 12 hours. Over the last week the levels have decreased further and seem to have stabilized at very low (and healthy) levels. Dr. Tim's One and Only is Magic! My tank is health and my daughter is happy.

Aquarium Products Pro Crystal Clear Instant Aquarium Water Clarifier (3/4 oz., Treats 400 Gallons)

Aquarium Products Pro Crystal Clear Instant Aquarium Water ClarifierAfter several weeks of trying cleaning, water changes and just about every kind of water clarification treatment, I found AP Crystal Clear. I figured the price wasn't too bad, so what harm could it do? The worst that could happen is that I'd be out $2 or whatever, so I gave it a go... I have to say, this stuff is a MIRACLE! Within 30 minutes the water in my fish tank began noticeably clearing and within an hour or so my entire 5 gal. tank was looking brand new again! I have never been so pleased with a fish product in my life, but this stuff is AMAZING! Would definitely recommend this to anyone with a cloudy water problem!

Hello,

I was using Seachem Neutral Regulator (NR) to bring my pH of 8.4 down to something closer to 7.0. I had added an incorrect amount of alkaline buffer to bring up a crashing 20 gallon freshwater aquarium and shot my pH up to 8.4. Doing water changes did very little to reduce the pH has my GH and KH were very high. Seachem NR precipitates calcium and magnesium to help soften the water and also buffers the pH. In doing so, the aquarium water will turn cloudy from all the calcium being precipitated out. I do not have a water polishing filter pad to remove the very fine particles of calcium. I purchased the AP Crystal Clear product in hopes that it would allow the particles of calcium to clump into larger particles that my filter could handle.

I am happy to report that after 12 hours my water as just about cleared up and I do not see much of the calcium particles in the water. My HOB pre-filter sponge has captured a good amount of the calcium after adding the AP Crystal Clear as well as the main foam filter.

The product worked well for me and I am happy with it.

Of all the tank water clearers I have used, I have found this one works the best. However make sure you read the directions. You see it tells you to use one drop per gallon but, to use two drops per gallon if the water is very cloudy. I have found using more than one drop per gallon works better without any effects on my fish, crab, pleco, frogs or snails (although the snails do close up when the drops are near them.) All in all, I buy this every few weeks to use along side weekly cleanings for my 20 gallon tank.

A lot of people say these types of thermometers aren't accurate. I disagree highly, I have several standard tube types that read the same temperature as this excellent unit. Plus unlike those where I have to take a moment to figure out the temperature, this one is clear at a glance. Unlike some other similar models, this one can be moved to other tanks or different spots on the same tanks. Very glad I purchased this, will buy this model again if needed!

This item is very accurate and easy to read. I am very happy with it. I also like the fact that it can easily be removed and repositioned if needed. I placed it at the bottom right side of my 35 gallon high line and 10 gallon tanks opposite the heater and it is, ... Spot On !

Penn Plax Floating Aquarium Thermometer

Penn Plax Floating Aquarium ThermometerThis thermometer is excellent. It gives the correct temperature and its small so it doesnt take up too much space in the aquarium tank. I own a turtle, and when he is swimming he scrapes the sides of the tank. Sometimes he bumps into the thermometer, and it falls down. So that is why i didnt give this 5 stars because the suction cup isnt too strong.

Bought this along with a heater for my 5 gallon frog tank. The thermometer got here over a week after the heater came, even though i ordered at the same time. And now I am not sure it's working. I felt the water before the heater very cold. I felt the water 24 hours later after the heater much warmer. The thermometer never changed. If it were to work, it's small, grips to the side of the tank very easily.

Want Penn Plax Floating Aquarium Thermometer Discount?

I purchased one of these to try with my strip temperature gauges on my 90 gallon saltwater reef system. Thankfully it was a cheap mistake.

The thermometer doesn't like to stick to the glass (which I cleaned very carefully to make sure there were no lingering algae deposits) and is easily knocked off by invertebrates and other creatures in your tank. Then you have to fish it out and stick it back up on the glass again.

It reads poorly compared to most strips; I compared it with them side by side to see if one was easier to read than the other. It also reads slower than strip thermometers (I tested it in an empty quarantine tank by raising the internal water temperature and the outside temperature strip registered the change faster).

I left it in the quarantine tank with normal reef salinity and gravity for a week and found it clouded. This is concerning if you are keeping coral as it could be leaking or subject to breaking in the tank. Not to be dissuaded that it might be one bad thermometer I purchased another and it suffered the same fate within the same time frame (it lasted a whole day longer).

I'm giving this a two star review because it may work in fresh water and be effective there but I wouldn't suggest it for a saltwater system. If you don't like thermometer strips you might as well spend the money on an expensive electronic reader that will also run a few of your tests for you.

Jardin Aquarium Fish Tank Ponds Ceramic Air Stone Diffusers, 40mm Diameter

Jardin Aquarium Fish Tank Ponds Ceramic Air Stone Diffusers, 40mm DiameterLove this product although there may not be any quality control associated with their production... 2 out of the 4 stones I ordered did not come in working order. Although the issue was an extremely quick fix. The nipple attachments on these are glued on with an epoxy. Unfortunately, if the epoxy is not applied perfectly it can prevent the airflow from the nipple to the stone. If this happens to you... don't freak out its an EASY FIX! All you have to do is find a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the nipple and drill into the center of the stone for about a 1/4 inch past resistance and the stone will work perfectly.

With a bit of pre-shipment product testing this product would be fine.... otherwise its an easy fix with a bit and a drill! Hope this helps and enjoy!

This air stone really surprised me. I hooked this up to my rena air pump for my 50 gallon tank and omg, the fine bubble output was amazing! A couple of weeks later my fairly new tank suffered a bacterial bloom. Bacterial blooms consume tremendous amounts of oxygen from the water but this little diffuser stone ended up being a life saver. While I did water change after water change in an effort to save my poor gasphing fish from sure death this stone (with air pump turned up full blast) put out enough bubbles to replace the oxygen and get my fish through the night. Heavy water circulation and this air stone did the trick not one fish lost. Cute shape and size is just right too. Would highly recommend.

Malaysian Driftwood, Large

Malaysian Driftwood, LargeThe driftwood is large. Like others who have bought this item, the piece that I received was more beautiful than the one that is pictured. It is a new piece which will leak Tannis into the the water causing the water to turn a brownish color. Some people do not like this, however, it is a natural process and in many cases helps your fish, depending on where they come from. Some fish require a "Black Water" effect which Tannis does provide. It does cause the water to become a little acidic. Mostly, it depends on if your tank was balanced or not. (A truly balanced tank should be at a neutral pH due to acidic and alkaline processes balancing each other out. Example: Nitrification by bacteria causes the water lower in pH; while photosynthesis from plants and algae causes an increase in pH.)

Because it is a new piece of driftwood, you may experience a period in which matter begins to decompose and fungus will grow. Fungus is one of nature's cleaners. It may be unsightly for a little while. Again, this is a natural process that will take care of itself in time. If you don't like the fungus at all, get tank mate(s) that like to eat the stuff. I recommend adding a few guppies to your tank, feeder or fancy will do. Just be aware that they are live bearers and have a 28 day birthing cycle. The babies can lead to overstocking, however, if you do not wish to care for them, they will be quickly eaten up by your other fish.

All in all, I am very happy with this piece of driftwood.

**If you have a shorter tank like a 20 gallon long, be sure to email the seller and ask questions about dimensions. Otherwise you might end up with a piece of driftwood that is too tall for you tank.**

I received this item very quickly. It is about 18 inches long and 12 inches at its widest. The one I received does not look like the one in the picture. I prefer the one I got over the one in the picture. It is made from a very good quality piece of wood. It is dense and light brown in color with several holes and protruding edges. This piece of driftwood looks natural except for the part that was cut from the main piece. The cut offers and unique look into the dark, dense, and almost petrified interior of this piece. I took off one star because this was literally put into a box with no packaging, thankfully it is a very sturdy piece of wood.

Buy Malaysian Driftwood, Large Now

I ordered this item knowing that the product I received would not be identical to the one in the picture. I absolutely love the piece I received! I soaked it in hot water for about an hour to remove some of the tannins and placed it in my tank during a water change. My tiger barbs and various loach species absolutely love dancing around the driftwood. They weave above and below the branches and seem so much happier with a more natural piece of aquarium decor.

The price is exceptional for the item received and I would recommend it to anyone!
