API Nexx Filter
Just set this up 2 days ago with 1 extension filter. Using it on a 90 gallon freshwater tank. There are both good things and bad so far.The Good:
* Everything you need to set it up is included in the box.
* It's very quiet running, you have to really listen to hear the sound of the water movement.
* It has a strong current.
* Was easy to figure out how to take the media baskets out and fill the top section with our choice of media. (You will need mesh bags if you use anything with pieces under 1 1/2in long)
The Bad:
* If you don't put the filters on the bases just right, they will Leak.
* The directions on how to hook the filter up are pictorial only. And don't always make lots of sense. They're also hidden inside the longer box inside the main one.
* Some of the clamps they give you are pretty cheap feeling, so we may need to replace them at some point soon.
* The part of the filter that sits inside the tank, doesn't lock into the holder. We had to rubber-band it in place or the fish keep knocking it out/off. (We have large fish, so this may not be an issue you have.)
So far, I'm liking it, but it was very disconcerting to notice about 3 hours after setting it all up that the water level in the tank was lower than it had been. We checked to make sure the tank wasn't leaking, and then realized the leak was coming from the filters! They were locked in, when we lifted up on the handle, the entire unit came off the floor. However it must have been off by a little bit as water was streaming slowly between the base and the filter case. Unlocking it and rocking it back and forth while pressing down seemed to help. But ultimately we had to take it completely off a few times and put it back before it apparently locked down correctly. After that, no leaks. But you may wish to have a flashlight near you for a bit after putting this together to check for leaks just in case.
Over-all, it seems to be a good filter, and it's easy to take apart which is what we needed. You can use other kinds of media, not just what they recommend, but you'll need filter bags as the holes in the top of the compartments are fairly large and small particles may fall out and clog things up. To get into the media compartment, lift out the long media basket thing by the handle. Push in on the blue tabs on the sides, and pull, the top should pop off leaving you with the yellow basket attached to the long plastic bits the carbon slides over. The basket will come off those with a good tug, and then everything snaps back into place.
Pro:
Quite possibly this is the quietest filter system I've (n)ever heard. The air pump driving the tanks water feature is far louder than this canister system (and it's not all that bad.)
Had no issues with water leakage at all, anywhere in the system. Possible that I cheated a bit to avoid the problem mentioned by the previous reviewer. Used a small amount of divers pure silicone grease on all the "O" rings and mating gaskets during assembly.
Flow rate at default setting seems just about perfect for a 40Gal tank.
Con:
The dial on the water pump to adjust flow will not turn I've applied pretty much as much force as I think a plastic dial can take before breaking. No dice. No idea what the different settings might mean for water flow.
The suction cups for the pump mount don't hold the pump in place very well. I consider this a seriously lazy design flaw. There's no reason the manufacturer couldn't have gone with a clip in design of some sort. And I don't have large fish knocking it about . . . slowly over time that pump wants to wander out of the mount.
The media baskets are very limited the bottom part is nothing more than a hollow square cage/bracket to hold the four sided pre-charged filter packets. The top part is very tiny for ceramic or plastic bio-media. The included bio-media stars do not adequately load even that small space, you might need or want more.
I'm thinking of doing a slight mod to this thing to increase the bio-filtration, as well as the use of mesh bags to allow me to use bulk carbon or other filtration materials. If it goes well will try to remember to update this review.
Update: No mods required. API sells a pair of insert foam parts that go into the bottom of each canister. Look for "API NEXX FOAM 30 PPI." What's important to know about these is they should NOT be used at the same time as the pre-shaped filter cartridges and four sided caddies. It's not really clear from the instructions (although there is a single small picture that shows the swap) but you need to remove the caddy/cage plastic part from the top compartments before using the foam.
Foam goes into the very bottom of both compartments. Your bagged media goes on top of that, then the disk shaped compartment for the bio-stars on top of the bags, and finally the lids. On the truly horrible pictogram documentation look specifically at section C, 10b for the one and only reference to how this looks. Be very sure that the bagged media is lose enough to allow good water flow, and that it does not require you to tamp down the top baskets to put on the lids.
WARNING: If you try to use the foam inserts and fail to remove the four sided caddy this canister will NOT seal properly and may spray water from the top of the lids.I setup the filter a couple of days ago for my 20 gallon tank. I needed a filter that could expand capacity since I'm planning on moving my juvenile Axolotls to a large tank once they get a bit bigger. I also needed to hook up to an Aquarium Chiller: Aqua Euro USA Max Chill Aquarium Chiller.
The Good:
*Very intuitive and easy to setup, given the pictorial instructions.
*Included the correct sized tubing for use with my Chiller.
*Includes a little extra piping for extending the lead to the pump should you need to place it further down inside the tank.
*The pump is SUPER quiet, at least compared to my last filter that hangs on the back of the tank.
*Includes more than enough suction cups for the pipes and such.
*I noticed a couple of people complained about the pump not fitting properly into the clip that suction cups to the tank wall. The instructions are very unclear, but they show that the pump also is suction cupped to the clip itself, making a very secure hold for it.
*I LOVE the feature that allows you to change the filters without needing to turn off the pump, it just diverts the flow while you change the filter media!
The Bad:
*The pictorial instructions were a bit hard to follow at times
*Dosen't leave my tank "crystal clear" like it advertised, but that may be due to the phosphates in my planted aquarium.
*The pump's flow rate is NOT ADJUSTABLE. It has a knob for it, but its been glued to be fully open or something. The current is pretty strong which I need to avoid for my type of fish. Looks like I'll be investing in a spray bar or something...

I have been running this filter for a year now on a 55 gallon tank. Works great! Make sure you turn the pump off while you change out the filter. Not a review, just wanted to pass long info on the flow control. Below is a recent message I received from API about it:"...unfortunately the max/min flow knob for the unit does not function in this filter. The unit will always run at max flow. The model pump for the filter is also used in another application in which the flow can be regulated however this feature is not available with the NEXX so it will always be on max flow."
That explains the goofy nature of the "control." If you've ever taken off the filter cover and looked at the knob, it's basically just a plug, with notches to hold it. Its only real function is to hold the impeller in place.

the filter media is flimsy, making it a bit more difficult to put in the filter than other models, and probably limiting the number of times you can wash it before having to replace the media cartridge.
not silent its not quite as loud as the bubblers (which really arn't loud either), but it hums a bit. in a silent room you will notice, if there is background noise already it wont be a big deal.

I really like this filter. It meets all my needs as far as adjustable flow rate, compact size and color (completely transparent). It is very quiet and seems reliable.The only issue I have with it is the connection between the intake extension tube and the intake assembly. The intake extension slips over the intake assy and this fit is made water-tight with a o-ring seated in a groove on the end of the intake assy. Upon first assembly, the o-ring snapped, allowing water to enter the intake at this connection and rendering the extension useless. I simply fixed the issue with some clear silicone sealant, but I felt it worth noting here.
I'd buy it again, I'd just be extremely careful with that tiny little o-ring.

I replaced a smaller HOB power filter with the Rapids Power filter in my 3 gal Betta tank. The the motor unit is set down inside the sealed, plastic filter body, not twisted in from the bottom so there's no o-ring to kink or leak. I dropped using the OEM filter cartridges for a custom cut (with scissors) multi-chemical asorbant mat that turns brown when exhausted (Poly Bio something or other). This filter has a clear body so it's easy to check on the pad's status. In addition to an array of aquariums ranging from 55 gallons and up we keep our Betta in an Aqueon 5 gallon Bow Front.When the bulb went out, I headed to the local pet store to pick up a replacement no dice, they don't carry them.
Then to both Petco and Petsmart again no dice they don't carry these but both suggested to try Home depot.
So off to Home Depot they carry this size bulb but the lowest wattage is 25 which would throw off far to much heat. I bought one anyway to give poor "Gill" a little much needed light.
But in twenty minutes the temperature, as expected began to rise.
I don't know why I didn't check Amazon to begin with after all we buy virtually everything else here. In fact out of my 120 reviews I would guess 40% are devoted to dog and aquarium supplies go figure.

Wonderful product! I couldn't find another one like it. It's small enough for my one gallon fish bowl. I have a single betta fish in the bowl. 1st it saves me time because now the fish bowl is lower maintence and i don't have to clean it near as often. DrTim's Aquatics One & Only Live Nitrifying Bacteria for Cycling Aquaria
Started 3 29 gallon tanks for a research project in biology.Tank 1: Plain Water with ammonium chloride as ammonia source.
Tank 2: APIs Quick Start with ammonium chloride as ammonia source.
Tank 3: DrTim's One & Only with ammonium chloride as ammonia source.
Ammonium Chloride was purchased from Amazon (DrTim's Ammonium Chloride Solution for Fish-less Cycling). Each tank was prepared with a standard dechlorinator (It is important not to use any product that binds or "locks" ammonia, as it is required for the cycle to progress). Water was allowed to rest for 24 hours, filters and heaters running, temps set to 80.5F, 30 LBS of standard gravel in each tank. Each tank received an initial dose of ammonium chloride of 29 drops (one drop per gallon), which raised ammonia to ~2.0 PPM.
Caveats: If you use an API test kit, you will likely see about half the expected ammonia concentration. The test is not accurate at low levels, and does not measure the type of source used as well as other master kits. Be concise with the dosing and you are fine. You can use a Nutrifin NH3/NH4 test or other high grade ammonia detection kit that measures NH3 and NH4. Do not adjust water parameters or add water for several days. If you must adjust water parameters, do so slowly. Water should only be added if it has been allowed to rest after 24 hours once treated with dechlorinator.
Results at 6 days:
Tank 1: Barely detectable amount of ammonia reduction, zero nitrites, zero nitrates.
Tank 2: Some reduction in ammonia, zero nitrites, ~20PPM nitrates.
Tank 3: .50 PPM Ammonia, zero nitrites, 50 PPM nitrates
Tank 3 has had one water change already, and is ready for the second due to rising nitrates. It is processing enough ammonia at this point to equal ~11 inches worth of fish. Ammonia has been added to this tank daily to sustain the cycle, as fish were never going to be introduced. I will be adding fish to this tank however, and reducing ammonium chloride dosing. Decided to keep this tank.
Myth 1: There are many posts on the Internet about fish-less cycling. Many of which suggest the use of off-the-shelf ammonia that you find in your local grocery or hardware stores. While some of these sources might be safe, most are not. The ammonium chloride is cheap, and will cycle many, many tanks. Consumers are generally unaware of the fact that not all ingredients need to be listed on products not intended for human consumption. Therefore, they see water and ammonia listed on a label and assume there is no surfactant in the off-the-shelf product. This is simply not the case. Most of these products do in fact contain other ingredients that are not safe for fish, and will destroy the bacteria needed for the aquarium cycle. This can be seen in one of the other reviews. The result was, the tank did not cycle as anticipated. If you want good results and have gone to the expense of purchasing a bacterial additive, spend the extra couple of dollars and get a pure source of ammonia.
Myth 2: Some postings on the Internet suggest that these products use terrestrial strains of bacteria. All nitrifying bacteria need soil or other surface. Therefore, all can be considered terrestrial. They are commonly found on the bottom of lakes and streams. Our filters and substrate mimic this environment. While evidence in my experiment suggests that not all products are created equal, some products do work -and work exceptionally well.
Myth 3: The cycle will crash because it isn't the right bacteria. Fact: If the bacteria were unable to sustain, we would not see the substantial growth noted in tank 3. In order for the ammonia to be processes and nitrite to nitrate, a large colony has to exist. Once these bacteria undergo binary fission (how they multiply), there is no logical argument that would support this cycle failing. If you have an environment where they will multiply, that will continue until there is no food source. Any crashing would be the result of that food source not being adequate for the colony. Another possible source of crashing, high nitrates (more than 50-75 PPM) as this will kill the bacteria. It is also possible that once the cycle begins to establish, that the consumer adds too many fish before the colony is large enough to sustain.
If you opt for fish-less cycling, use a pure source of ammonia (ammonium chloride). If you opt for fish-in, make sure you do not use an ammonia binding product to dechlorinate the water. Let the water rest for a full 24 hours before you add fish and the product. You may test for ammonia/nitrite/nitrate -but only adjust your parameters if the results show >2.0PPM Ammonia or >50PPM Nitrate. Other than that, leave it alone for at least a week. If you do need to reduce any of the parameters via a water change (25%), fill your bucket the day before and add your standard dechlorinator to the water and let it rest for a complete 24 hours before adding to the tank. Keep your filters wet at all times (bacteria will die).

I had something strange happen during a new tank set up. I used old gravel and it caused an ammonia spike. I did wash it and even used bleach but after farther testing with some left over it still released ammonia's into the water. I've been a fish keep for years and never had this happen before. The product was very helpful, it instantly cycled my 10 gallon fish tank within a week. Prior to that, I had waited for over a month to cycle my new tank, and as result of such waiting game, I was becoming very disenchanted with fish keeping. The trick was simple, add ammonia chloride as food source for the bottled nitrifying bacteria to eat. I had doubts as to the ability of Dr Tim's (or any other products) claims. However, after my first use I'm a believer Five Stars. Cambridge Aquatics Automatic Fish Feeder
I have an aquarium set up in my classroom. I don't like going to work when I don't have to but the little fishies need to eat. Automatic feeder is the natural solution. I just set this one up and it works great. It attaches simply to the side of the tank and is easy to operate. It has an option for feeding twice per day (every 12hr) or once per day (every 24 hr). When you get it filled and set up you start the timer by clicking the "feed" button. I don't know what else you could ask for. The food reservoir is large enough for my needs. I will update this review later with more details on how long the food lasts and how durable the unit seems to be. As far as I can tell so far, it seems great.
The second button is labeled 12H and 24H. What exactly do they do? I haven't a clue. The dispenser does not start when this setting is changed from one position to the other.
The unit has been working, as evidenced by bits of food scattered next to the opening at the tank top, but I've not seen or heard it operate (on it's own) since I put batteries into it and installed it on the tank several months ago. Knowing the batteries might be getting old, I sought the instructions, so I could reset the unit when I replaced the batteries. I couldn't find the manual so I looked on the unit for a label indicating manufacturer and model number. Nothing!
I checked Amazon for automatic feeders and, judging by the picture, this is the unit. So I Googled "Cambridge Aquatics". Again NOTHING. You'd think the company has some kind of web presence a place to download owner's manuals perhaps? Not this company. After 15 minutes I gave up trying to locate instructions.
I'm not saying don't buy this unit. But if you do. DON'T LOSE THE INSTRUCTIONS.
You might try other mainstream offerings instead though.
Round Glass Fish Bowl
Caring for fish in a very small bowl like this one is stressful both for the fish and the fishkeeper.In a small bowl like this, the fish's waste will build up rapidly (espcially since there is no filter). This causes suffering (for example, eye and skin irritation), sickness, and even death. You can try to prevent this by changing the water frequently; however, frequent water changes are also stressful for the fish. (Not to mention a pain for the fishkeeper!)
In addition, the temperature of such a small volume of water will fluctuate rapidly; another source of stress for the fish. You cannot use a heater in a bowl this small.
In particular, this bowl is *not* ideal for goldfish and bettas.
Goldfish grow to be up to one foot long. Even when they are smaller, they produce a lot of waste. Goldfish need 10-20 gallons of water *each*, and they are schooling fish so you shouldn't have just one.
Bettas are tropical fish. They need a tank heated to 80F; there is no way to safely heat a tank smaller than 5 gallons.
If you'd like to care for a fish, please read some of the excellent websites out there and learn all you can. (Ignore manufacturers websites, since of course they will say their products are great, even crummy products like this one.) Get the largest tank you can afford. If you can't afford a large enough tank, please don't get the fish.

Stunning little tank, with quality glass body & glass lid. Filter is literally noiseless and comes with bio-media. filter compartments can be filled with other material as needed. LED light produces a nice slightly cool blue-ish tone. My betta fish originally lived in an one-gallon plastic hexagon tank TOM Mini Hex 1gal Aquarium Kit with UGF, Air Pump without using the air pump. I change water twice a week, but he was still sick. He had rotted and split fin (got worse everyday), body was pale and eyes were dull. I went to an aquarium store, the owner gave me some Thailand herb for the fish, and told me that the fish needs to have warm water (like 78-80F)... However, even the smallest tank heater requires at least 2 gallon of water. That's why I decided to buy this tank. This tank comes with built-in filtration system, bio-balls, ceramic rings, glass lid and LED lighting. The set up is pretty simple. The only thing is that the water flow is a bit too strong for betta fish. I use a piece of plastic sheet, fold it and slide into where the water comes out to redirect the water flow, my betta is very happy and energetic now. Glass tank looks much better than plastic one. I put some plants too, and the water seems very clean all the time (compare to my old setup). You may consider adding filter foam to remove the dust and debris or also adding a nitrate remover pad to eliminate brown algae.

This filter is great.Plastic is sturdy construction.
It is dead quiet. The first few days there was a slight rattle with the impeller but that went away and never came back. It is in my bedroom and it is so quiet that I can barely hear the minutest of hums in the dead quiet of the night. Like I have to concentrate to hear it. During the day I literally have to put my ear a few inches from the glass to hear it ticking over.
Adjustment of the water flow is easy and doesn't cause the unit to make more noise like the Hydor Ekip did. The flow control however is also not continuous, but rather in a 3 discrete levels.
I like the fact that it comes with 3 output attachments; Spray bar, top v-spout, and standard center pipe.
I will say that the cleaning of the filter requires a bit of delicate handy-work as the flow control tab (hard to explain but you will understand when you buy it) is delicately wrapped around the sponge. As long as you are careful you won't break anything.
The electrical cord is about 1.6 meters long.
The spraybar dampens the current nicely in a small tank. I have a 5.5g nano and it keeps the water moving but does not 'blow stuff around'. With the spraybar attached the unit is 6 3/4 inches wide and 6 1/4 inches tall.
The suction cups are very strong, in fact, maybe too strong, as I have to really pull them off hard to get them to cooperate.
It has a good quality sponge whose grain is not too fine or too thick. It takes a good couple weeks before I start to notice dirt in the sponge (which you can see because the filter case is clear), and my water stays very clear. When I squeeze out the sponge carefully (in water from the tank so as not to kill the bacteria) I can get it looking brand new again easily. Also, the current around the sponge intake is not too strong, I think baby shrimps would have no trouble steering clear of the being sucked up into the intake. Besides, the sponge grain is too fine to allow them in.
The carbon section of the filter is ridiculously small, maybe 7 cubic centimeters. Instead of bothering with carbon I just leave the original carbon in there as an extra biological filter medium.
This is a great mini filter. I would highly recommend it.t

I initially had a Tetra Whisper In-tank Filter 3i for my 2.5 gallon tank and it did absolutely nothing. It barely cleaned the tank and the bottom of the filter always had to be at least an inch away from the rocks. This got annoying every time I moved the plants around or when the rocks moved during water changes. Since I've added the TOM Aquarium Mini Internal Filter, I've kept the Tetra Whisper since it holds some of the good bacteria. I plan to retire the Tetra once the TOM has gathered enough good bacteria.

My girlfriend and I picked up a betta around Christmas time which we promptly named Frank. Frank was a dull fish, he did not move around very much in his 3 x 3 cube. He kind of just floated in the same spot, occasionally attacking a passerby's finger. It was a mere few days before we became severely depressed by Frank and decided that he needed a life intervention to spruce up his funky mood. We traveled many moons through mist covered forests to the mystical shop of Walmart where we purchased a 1.5gal tank with a heating lamp. After the brutally quick transition from cup of water to gallon + paradise Frank was alive! He was happily swimming throughout his new home and flashing his brilliant colors for all to see!. The only problem? his water would become cloudy in two days...and I am not exaggerating. Whoever suggested that bettas do not need a large environment, heated water and a good filtration systems should be forced to live in a 4 ft x 4 ft unlit closet with no bathroom in a house in Alaska with no heat. seriously, you may be able to survive in this tiny filthy closet but would you ever be remotely happy? No, I think not, and neither was Frank in his tiny little cup of water.So began the quest for a good filtration system. This led to many dead ends, and returned purchases. It turns out that Frank does not like moving water...at all. This little guy will literally attack moving water. The Walmart filters that said they would be good for "small tanks" blew him around like a fart caught in the wind. He would get so troubled by this that he began attacking the nozzle head. I was stuck without an idea left, I was sure Frank was doomed to a life of swimming in his own fecal matter and algae overgrowth. Until one day when the clouds parted and a ray of sunshine kissed my troubled mind.
The TOM Aquarium Mini Internal Filter popped up in my amazon search results. After a few days of waiting (filter arrived ahead of schedule, go amazon!) the filter was installed and churning out a gentle stream of water. Frank loves this filter. The sprayer bar is the best invention of the 21st century. The water it it cranks out it gentle enough that Frank swims by it regularly, I am actually beginning to think that he like the sensation. The filter is absolutely dead silent. I kid you not, no noise what so ever. We have had it on for about 1.5 weeks and the water is crystal clear. Just like other reviews have stated the suction cups are like a jacked up octopus tentacle, good luck trying to get these suckers off lol. The one trick is to slide the filter up and out of the tank...voila...easy removal. I would 100% buy this filter again, you should buy it too. It will totally work for you tiny tank. Our little Frank is happy and clean, which is really all that matters!

I've had this in a 2.5 gallon betta tank for about a month and it's been great so far.I encountered the same problem with the suction cups being too strong and solved it by taking off the two cups on the bottom of the media cartridge. Now the cartridge pops right out of the impeller assembly with no fuss.
The little cartridge of carbon can be pried open and new carbon put in but as the other reviewer said there's so little space it's not really worth it.
I also want to note that the amazon description states it's good for up to 10 gallons but the packaging and instruction manual say 5 gallons

I just got it tonight so this is just off the last hour or so but I'm not to impressed right now. I am using this for a 1 gallon Betta tank and once again it seems just a little to strong a current even on the lowest setting. I had been going off other reviews that said it worked great for exactly such conditions. I will have to see though if things even out with time. I have another tank that I need to figure something out for still.Update:
Ok I've now had this filter for a couple of weeks now and I do like it a lot actually I tried the other attachment head for it and that made a lot of difference in how strong of a current it puts out. I even bought a second one for my other Betta tank. Now just to figure out the replacement filter part. They do have them on amazon but not with prime shipping and the shipping costs more then the replacement. I'm thinking I may try and just replace the carbon and the sponge.

I'm happy with this for the money. The quality of the lamination is as good as anything I've seen in the stores. I would give it more stars if it was a bit more vivid in it's coloring. Penn Plax Battleship Aquarium Fish Tank Decoration
I am a naval/history buff. When I saw this product I had to have it for my fish tank. It is fairly historically accurate and looks great in the tank. Have had several people comment on it possitively and I wish my tank was bigger to get more ships like this one. The holes in the ship are not made for larger fish but my neons, tetra's and emerald catfish go in and out with ease.
The only downside: I wish there was a whole set of modern warships like this one sold on Amazon.

I put this in my 40 gallon tank. I drilled a few very mini holes in the top of the stack, and stuck a small air stone inside the body. My husband came home and just loved it. I have the sunken ship background and a huge rock collection with the plants. Let's just say we have some very happy loaches,flying foxes,and misc. other fishies. Four Thumbs up from this family!

I use about a teaspoon in over a hundred gallons every month or so and my algae problems have completely dissapeared. There are people who to supplement this with barley, I say humbug. I tried this out last year. I have a large 10,000 gal. koi pond in my yard with lots of overhanging trees. When we bought the house, the pond had been neglected for seveal years.
