Fluval Carbon, 100-gram Nylon Bags - 3-Pack

Fluval Carbon, 100-gram Nylon Bags - 3-PackThese are pretty nice. You get three small bags of carbon. I should have figured out how much 330G was because they are kind of small for the Fluval FX5. I put two in my filter and I could still fit two more if I wanted. Next time I am going to buy the filter bags and just fill them up with carbon. This is cheaper then you will find at local pet stores, but I think I should be able to get more for my money if I fill my own filter bag.

I was looking at purchasing carbon in a bulk container and inserting it into a re-usable medai bag. However, after crunching some numbers, it is actually cheaper to purchase this three-pack than it is to purchase carbon in bulk.

I only use it in tanks that I need to clear medication out, or have inserted some wood that is releasing tannins and making the water dingy. In an ongoing bassis, my filters don't include carbon. However, I like having some on hand just in case. These prepackaged bags are handy and great to use when needed.

EHEIM Classic External Canister Filter with Media

EHEIM Classic 250 External Canister Filter รข?? 2213OK, there just simply isn't a better filter on the market. With the intake on the bottom and the exhaust on the top, there is simply no place for water to bypass the media and hence the filtration is far more efficient. Some people complain that the filter is quite difficult to clean. However, the manual shows an easy way to do this. I have kept mine without cleaning for 3 months or and my heavily planted fresh water aquarium has been doing great. The media is reusable and reusable and reusable. Get my point? :-)

They are extremely efficient. A bit more expensive that the rest of canister filters out in the market. But in the long run, these are better since they last longer and the rarely break down.

Worried about the filtration on your aquarium??? Get one of these silent/efficient/reliable guys.

I have been using my Eheim 2213 for 19 years now, and have never had to replace any parts, until now. It is an incredible filter, that keeps everything in the tank clear and fresh. The only complaint I have has already been fixed. The double shutoff connections that they've added will make cleaning it so much easier. 19 years ago, they didn't have these, but I may buy some extras. I've heard that the only downfall for Eheim is ordering replacement parts. The only thing needing replacement is the suction cups that hold the parts in place inside of the tank. Everything else is wonderful!

I would definitely recommend this to others. Especially with a good price for a canister filter.

This is the best and only filter I will ever own for my tank. It is very cost effective. I used to run the Bio-wheel and or the Whisper type filters. I found those filters to not last long and would have to change filters every 2 weeks. With this filter, changes are at about 3 month intervals however, I still recommend you do your normal water changes. The filter is extremely quite and is easy to set up.

I bought my 2211-37 in late August 2010 and have it filtering a 16 gallon aquarium with one 5 inch goldfish (2 inches body, 3 inches tail). I'm guessing it can probably support 3 or 4 inches of goldfish not counting tail. (Goldfish are very messy, and a power filter on this tank cannot keep up.) The 2211 keeps up just fine--the water is crystal clear, and the ammonia and nitrite are zero. The pump is silent. It came with all the filter media, piping and quick disconnect couplers for both the intake and outflow--everything you need. My outflow coupler arrived cracked, and Fancy Pants Pets replaced it no charge. There is no internal canister to hold the media like in the 2213. The media sets directly in the can with a separator plate at the bottom to provide some space at the intake before the water flows through the bio media. The bio cylinders and bio balls are separated by the coarse filter pad. The fine filter pad and charcoal pad sit atop the bio balls, and a separator plate goes in on top to keep stuff out of the pump at the top. Cleaning is very easy and quick. There is no primer, so to prime the first time, you need to suck on the outflow. After that, you can prime the filter by leaving the intake filled with water at the coupling, opening the outflow coupler, then opening the intake coupler. The spray bar puts out quite a bit of flow (79 gph), I'd guess about 2/3 of what the 2213 does, so that's a lot of flow for a small tank like this, but not too much for my goldfish--she loves it. The pipes on the 2213 are both 12 mm, but on the 2211 the return pipe is only 9 mm while the intake is 12 mm. The height of the unit is 11.75 inches, but the return pipe climbs up a 1/4 inch higher, and you're going to want at least 12.5 inches to clear the unit. The canister is 4 inches across and a 5 inch square base is provided for the canister to rest in for added stability. This is an excellent filter for tanks 20 gallons and less (Eheim says up to 40 gallons, but if you've got goldfish in more than 20 gallons, you're going to want more filter). Max install height is 5 feet 10 inches. The 2211 is definitely worth the money over the hang on the back filters, which have much less bio filter capability and don't run silent like this one. The 2211 is also more suitable for small tanks than the 2213 is, which has a bit too much flow for under 20 gallons.

July 2011 UPDATE: I've had this filter on this tank for almost a year now. In that time I've had to clean it 4 times--it needs cleaning more often than the larger Eheim filters due to the smaller diameter. The good news is it's pretty easy to clean. (You know it needs cleaning when you see reduced outflow during a water change. I take care when cleaning my canister filters to keep the bio media submersed in tank water during the cleaning so as to keep the bacteria alive.) I have kept three different goldfish in the tank during the past year (one at a time). After the 5 inch veil tale above, a 6 inch fantail which kept his tank pretty clean for a goldfish, and more recently a 5 inch pearlscale which leaves more food and poop in the tank. The Eheim has kept the tank crystal clear and the water quality perfect all the time and given me no trouble. The 2211 is even quieter than when it was new, which is pretty close to silent. This is a great little filter for small tanks, and I'm very happy with it.

The Eheim 2217 canister filter is a great workhorse. It provides mechanical, biological, and chemical filtration in a compact and nearly silent package. Like all external canister filters, it's best if you have an enclosed cabinet in your tank stand where it can be kept out of sight.

The instruction manual leaves a little to be desired. The illustrations are small and it's not always obvious which image goes which which instruction. However, once you sort out the various filter elements (coarse and fine filter pads, activated carbon pad, ceramic coarse mechanical filter material, and biological filter substrate) it's straightforward to get set up.

The filter comes with intake and outflow tubing as well as quick-disconnect valves for ease of cleaning. The filter stack must be mostly disassembled when replacing the filter pads, but it is neither complex nor overly time-consuming. The results speak for themselves: clear water, stable conditions, thriving fish. I'm very glad I bought the Eheim.

TOM Aquarium Surface Skimmer-canister and power filters

TOM Aquarium Surface Skimmer-canister and power filtersThis surface skimmer takes some fiddling to get working properly.

In short, this will replace your filters normal intake tube, so right there is where most of your (potential) issues will come into play. For me the tube on this was the exact same size as the intake of my canister filter, which means I couldn't hook it up. I ended up taking the tube into a nearby Lowe's and searching for plastic (not metal) fittings that would work with it to get it hooked up.

The clear plastic part you can see in the photos is the float, after installing you'll need to lift that part out of the water so that the underside has air in it. You then gently lower it onto the water and the trapped air will make it float. The piece of plastic that sticks up the center is how you adjust how much suction there is, twist it until the float is skimming the water, but not strong enough to pull it completely under.

This will create noise, but with some tweaking you can minimize it.

I had never heard of the brand "TOM" before, but based on the pictures this one is exactly the same as the one offered by Hagen.

Caution: I maintain fully planted tanks, which includes floating plants. Unfortunately, floating plants will very easily clog this up. I somewhat expected that, but thought I'd try it anyways. I may keep trying at a later time with a very minimal amount of surface skimming to see if there can be a balance.

I too was having problems with the nasty film on top of my water. I have 2 eheims, 2217 and 2228. I hooked this up to my 2228 intake. Eheim offers a surface extractor for $40. The TOM was only around $11 so I thought I'd try it first. It is awesome. Just as advertised. The flex hose is removable and the little L fitting can be slid on in place of the flex hose. I hooked directly up to my U tube intake. I did this by removing the strainer on the end of the U tube and cut a little piece of eheim tubing (about 2", but it may vary for you) in order to fit the skimmer to the U tube. Great product. My surface is now crystal clear. As soon as I hooked it up, you could see the film being sucked right in. It's hard to tell, but the clear plastic strainer on the TOM moves freely and separate from the black portion. It floats on the surface. Twisting the black stick that goes down through the center of the strainer moves a stopper at the bottom and it's used to regulate the flow entering either the bottom of the device (as a regular intake would work) or the top of the device (clear strainer at the top). There is a fine balance and takes a little time to get the flow right, but not too bad. Very happy with purchase.

This skimmer is on my 90 gallon HEAVILY planted aquarium; and I bought it to get rid of the film on top of the water. The skimmer comes with almost no directions; you just have to figure it out which isn't too hard.

By design, the clear piece with the inverted castle top floats, and by design (and depending on your filter flow rate) it shouldn't require much tweaking. I do not believe the device was intended for the size of filter I'm running so the concept of "float balance" as designed doesn't exactly work flawlessly for me. However, I'm using it far beyond it's intended capability bracket and therefore it does require a bit of tweaking and daily attention due to my high light an evaporation rate but I've negated that by using a rubber band to somewhat restrict the floating upper part of the device which has worked well.

BUT Overall this product is good. Could be better with simple engineering changes but whatever.... If you're semi-intelligent, have less than a 100 gallon aquarium and run less than 200 watts of compact fluorescent light you should be pleased. I gave it 5 stars because; although not perfect, it functions extremely well for the price.

I do not have any film on the top of the water any more!

I have this TOM skimmer hooked up to a Rena XP4 running full blast; and it isn't a straight connection with the parts from the box. You must take a piece of your Rena filter tubing and use it to connect the "bendy" part of the TOM skimmer to connect it to the Rena intake. I used a 1 inch piece, no big deal but I was curious when I bought mine so I thought you should know....

Little to no directions on how to actually use this. It appears this same exact item is made for other companies under different names. I found a PDF 'manual' by searching for 'Hagen surface skimmer PDF'. A big part of the correct functionality of this device that I could not figure out was, a pocket of air must remain under the top portion for it to correctly float. It's a little tricky to get setup but once done, makes sense and is easily adjustable. The only time I really have to adjust it is when I feed the fish. I dial it all the way up so it's not surface skimming and is only pulling from the bottom. I then feed the fish and dial it back down so its clearing the crud off the top.

I'm using this surface skimmer attached to an Aquaclear 10 HOB filter to remove surface scum in my marine tank. (I don't run a protein skimmer.) I had to cut the elbow adapter to make it fit into the Aquaclear intake but that was a 2 minute job. It takes a bit of fiddling to adjust it so the water flows in without making a lot of gurgling noise but once adjusted it works pretty good. The teeth are small so your fish and inverts don't get sucked in the filter.

Cons: Sometimes the floating arm will sink below the water's surface when large snails climb up on it. My snails enjoy the gunk that accumulates in the intake. The elbow adapter and flex hose didn't fit my filter, I had to cut to fit. Easy enough but it would have been better if there were some other adapter options.

Gave it 4 stars because it does take some work to figure out how to adjust the inner screw so the intake floats. Instructions are pretty much garbage. It definitely gets the scum off the top of the water. I wrote this review as I'm purchasing two more for my other tanks.
