It also has a poly-floss type filter insert that can be rinsed off when dirty & replaced only when absolutely necessary. Also being clear with the bright yellow compartments it's easy to see inside for anything that you need to check on. I just rinse the bio-media & the poly-floss insert about once every 2 weeks & I'm good to go! Just be sure to rinse it in the aquarium water you're changing or in de-chlorinated water, you don't want to kill off the beneficial bacteria.
The compartment that would hold the carbon has a good enough sized area that you could easily put any other kind of media in it that you like. Purigen, zeolite or whatever. Just put it in one of those nylon media bags & you're all set.
All in all I'm very pleased with this filter & would buy one again without hesitation. This product was easy to assemble and seems to work well. It is a little loud, but I got used to the sound.

pH Meter SMS120 w/Alert

Truthfully, all I ever bother to do is look at the display to see where the pH is, I make sure the Co2 canister isn't empty, and take a peek at the bubble counter. If you use a timer to turn off the solenoid when the aquarium lights go off you'll have a fully automated Co2 system for your plants and it's a dream! I'm disabled and very limited in what I can do. Anything that makes life easier, even if only a little, helps a lot so I automate everything. I've found that calibrating my probe two to four times a year with the General Hydroponics Ph 4.01 & Ph 7.0 Calibration Solution Kit (also on Amazon) works perfectly. I just put a little of each solution in a couple of fresh ziplocks. It'll take ages to run out of solution and my PH probe stays accurate.
Make sure to keep the instructions, even if you just put it in a little bag and tape it to the back of the meter. You'll want to have it handy each time you calibrate.
I can't say this about most of my aquarium equipment, but if my pH meter ever dies I'll get another exact same one right away.Works great but looks nothing like the picture mine is beige in color and shaped differently but who cares the green is kinda ugly..i like the device, but it was upsetting not to have both testing solutions for calibration. it only comes with the ph 7 and is missing the ph 4 solution.

Bettas can live in small tanks without filtration and without aeration. However, without filtration their water MUST be changed regularly--not topped off as it evaporates, as evaporation doesn't remove fish waste or nitrates from the existing water. With a one gallon container (the approximate size of this bowl), owners can expect to replace the water once or twice a week, which is no big deal with a tabletop bowl but probably a bit inconvenient with a wall-mounted bowl.Goldfish, on the other hand, need large amounts of water with filtration and aeration. First, they are large fish--they grow up to a foot in length--and thus need a larger quantity of water to maintain them. Second, they are inefficient eaters and produce a lot of waste, and so filtration (and enough water to accomodate their waste) is a must. Third, they are cold water fish, and cold water holds more oxygen; no room-temperature bowl can provide enough. A single gallon will not keep a goldfish alive long, and will not keep it healthy.
As for other "easy-to-maintain" fish, I have my doubts. A fish may be hardy enough to survive a while in a tiny unfiltered tank, but hardy and healthy are not the same things. In addition, most of these fish will need at least one gallon PER fish, which puts schooling species at a distinct disadvantage.
Which brings me to the reviewer who keeps a betta and two African Dwarf Frogs in this bowl and only changes water once every two weeks. Despite the fish lasting 'a whole year' so far, the tank really is overcrowded and under-maintained. The proof is not that the fish and frogs have lasted a year, but whether they last their full lifespan--seven years for the betta, between ten and twenty years for the frogs.

Yet another item I have switched over to Amazon as my pricing just went up at our local fish store plus now that the tank is completed we only go back to the store to buy the replacements. This was $12.99 at my store for (3) pack!Read Best Reviews of Marineland Rite-Size Cartridge H, 3 Pack Here
$5 cheaper than the petstore, came quickly. I tried knock-off brands, but they were definitely inferior, so I went back to the Eclipse brand.Since the local pet shop does not sell this size any longer, ordering it online was fast and easy. I will continue to be purchasing this product unless my fish tank no longer exists.Aqua Background Aquarium Products brand - BUA Bankground WATER COLORS 48X30 BK

I would never force a betta to live in that small of a tank, let alone two.

note before my review: Yea ok, so everyone QQing over this needs to just think about it from a breeders standpoint...I jar my bettas in quart mason jars. The males anyways. I do not see how this is any different. The ONLY downside and I mean ONLY, is that the divider is not a solid color, preventing the males from seeing each other. Is this meant for keeping a betta forever and ever as a HOME? No...But as a breeding standpoint, it is fine. If you are stupid enough to think a breeder would have a gallon-per-male, you are wrong. It is more cost and space efficient for mason jars, beanie baby boxes, or these small acrylic breeders.So.........if you dont like it because it is "cruel", dont write a review. Reviews are only helpful if you point out flaws in construction, pricing, etc. Your opinion means jack from a consumer standpoint.
I rate this product a 4, and that is because the divider is NOT a solid color. Bi-weekly water changes are suggested and this setup is NOT suggested for long-term use.
