Tetra 19016 Replacement Foam For FK3 Pre Filter

Tetra 19016 Replacement Foam For FK3 Pre FilterGreat Product to protect my bubble eyes from getting caught in the filter. I would buy this product again for this reason alone. It also provides additional mechanical filtration.

I ran into problems with our other filer when the fountain head broke on it and bought the FK3 filter/fountain kit with the replacement filter and haven't had any problems after 2 months of being installed.

This filter can be adapted (cut it shorter if need be) for most pond pump/filters that have a 1-inch center funnel. I was having the worst time trying to find one for the pump I bought 3 years ago...until I got this one. It works great. Thanks.

Exotic Environments Lighthouse Ruin Aquarium Ornament, 6-1/2-Inch by 6-Inch by 9-Inch

Exotic Environments Lighthouse Ruin Aquarium Ornament, 6-1/2-Inch by 6-Inch by 9-InchThis looks great inside my tank. The fish love swimming inside and all around the lighthouse. I am very pleased with the way it looks inside the tank.

I was extremely pleased with this product. It provides a lot of different sized openings for fish of any size to enter and hide. I have a 46 gallon bow front tank, and the size fits perfectly, allowing for room to put plants and other decorations. If you've got a smaller tank, obviously you'd be limited with how many decorations you'd be able to use in conjunction with this item.

Overall, a good purchase for the cost.

Marina Air Pump

Marina 75 Air PumpJust got this air pump and set it up in my Fluval Edge. I wanted an air pump from a reputable manufacturer and (most importantly) that was quiet as can be. This air pump by Hagen fits the bill, especially on the quiet arena. My other aquarium is using a Tetra Whisper 10 air pump. I thought that was as silent as they come, that is until now. But hearing this Hagen Marina 75 in action, my Tetra Whisper is far from being a "whisper" and more like a lawnmower by relative comparison. Okay, I'm exaggerating a bit, but honestly, the Marina 75 is quiet and puts the Tetra Whisper to shame.

This Marina 75 air pump is quiet. Not silent, but very quiet. Quieter than all the rest, and I've tried all the brands. It puts out enough air for a small tank. After I got this one, I tried the 100, and it puts out a good deal more air and is very nearly as quiet as the 75--surprisingly so. So if you've got more than 20 gallons, go for the 100. Haven't tried the 200 yet, but I've got one on order.

UPDATE Aug 2012: All of these Marina air pumps get noisier over time. I've also broken the nipple on every single pump I've owned when I've tried to remove the air line. The 200 is not quiet from the start. Even so, I buy one every so often because they are cheap and most of them start out quiet. I get the 100 because I want the air. Originally I gave this product 5 stars. Now just 3.

The quality is just not here material wise, the plastic nipples broke off 1st one after about 3 weeks the second after 5. they are recessed and had flexible airline attached, almost impossible to put any stress on them.

My guess is heat and poor quality plastic.

Both plastic nipples that the air hose attaches to broke off so now can't be used at all. I had purchased it about 6 months ago.

When this product first arrived, its performance blew my mind. It was silent and explosive, and my plants seemed to be thriving.

When the Amazon box first arrived, I took out the air pump, connected the airline, plugged it in and let it run. That was the last time I touched it.

Two weeks later, the air pump was still going strong but my plants were all dead. The two black nozzles where the (2 foot) airline connected were barely hanging on: snapped under the routine pressure of running 24/7.

From a previous (horrible) experience with an Aqua Culture air pump, I was already cautious about poor quality air pumps, so I made sure I connected the airline only once. There was no constant tugging or pulling on the plastic nozzles: I connected an airline once the first time it was plugged in.

The pump's longevity simply isn't there.

I uploaded a picture of the broken pump after 2 weeks:

They can refund my money, but they can't refund my dead plants.

Tap Water Filter

Tap Water FilterConceptually this is a good method of transforming hard water into "soft" water via an ion exchange resin located inside the column. Unfortunately, hard water (which exists where water is pulled from the ground, typically) reduces the usability to about 10 gallons of water. Further, the columns are difficult to swap out without producing periodic leaks, they are awkward to store when not in use and they cannot be regenerated at home necessitating the purchase of new columns very frequently.

It does not provide value for the cost.

So I have off the scale, hard municipal water... and this filter actually does a pretty good job on it. It produces water completely free of contaminates, chlorine, etc (using api test kit ofc), and does so at 10 gph with no runoff more efficient than most home RO machines, especially at the price. It's also extremely simple to hook up and use.

The problem is, I too only got an estimated 30-40 gallons out of the canister, which is well short of the advertised average of 50-150 gallons.

My tank is an open design 55 gallon, and I lose close to 5 gallons a week to evaporation. So I did some math.

40 gallons produced (1 canister) / 5 gallons per week = roughly 8 weeks of use, for $22 plus shipping

40 gallons x .50 cents at the RO machine down the street = $20 (minus hauling all that water up 2 flights op stairs every other week)

After a close race, the machine loses by a narrow margin. But only because the canisters cost too much. If they were to drop the price a bit, I might pick some up for the convenience alone. As for now, I'll pretend to be content lugging water cans around all the time. Guess it's good exercise.

I got 10 years out of my old DI filter, running off water for many salt tanks in a way that didn't waste water the way my old RO unit did. But eventually, the fitting cracked, and I am just thrilled they are still being manufactured. Great, efficient, yes cartridges are pricey but on a decent water supply they last a while, and takes little storage space.

Used this filter a few times and it worked well until it suddenly started to cause the filtered water to smell something akin to a strong chemical cat urine odor. I had added some water to a fish tank and the tank smelled rank. As a result, I had to change out the tank and add clean unfiltered water. I think the fish are okay. I will throw the unit away as it also is causing the entire room to smell awful. Total waste of money and I hope I didn't harm the fish by using this product.

Lee's Triple-Flow Corner Filter, Large

Lee's Triple-Flow Corner Filter, LargeThere's a local fish shop in Lewiston, Maine I visit about every 2-3 weeks or so. The owner is a gentleman I'd guess to be about 70 years old who says he's been in the business for 40 years. I'd estimate he's got well over 100 tanks running in his store. Compared to the other pet stores in the area (Petco & Petsmart types), his tanks are crystal clear. Yesterday, I stopped by and struck up a conversation with him. He started asking questions about my tank (75 gallon freshwater) and my filtration system. When I told him I was running an Emperor 400 HOB filter, he promptly told me it was no good. I asked if I should go with a canister filter. He told me those are "crap". He recommended that I install a couple large Lee's corner filters. He pointed out that he uses them in all his tanks, and credits the filters with keeping the tanks so clear. He claimed that he's sold 15,000 of them during his career. He emphasized how inexpensive they are to buy and operate, and that they require very little maintenance. He suggested changing out the carbon and polyester fiber about every 6 months...but also stated that he's got filters he hasn't touched in 3 years. For about $30, he set me up with 2 large filters, and enough carbon and polyester fiber to last at least a few years.

On the way home, I got to thinking about my little aging air pump, so I stopped at Walmart and picked up a more powerful Tetra Whisper Air Pump with dual air outlets for about $20. Less than an hour after I got home, both filters were up and running. Like some of the other reviewers stated, the quality of the plastic is disappointing...I'm giving this item a 4 star rating (rather than 5 stars) because of this fact. The unit seems quite fragile and I imagine it wouldn't take much to break it. However, I'm already liking these filters. I like the fact that they are clear, enabling you to see them at work. When I got up the next morning (about 12 hours after installation) I could see a noticeable difference in the water clarity.

For me, the true test will be how they perform over time. But for now, I'm impressed.

This filter does the job as expected. I am not so found of the attachable base on the bottom. It make the filter sit crooked in my gravel. I also would change the air tube. I like using an aeration stone, added oxygen in tank, but the little tabs that hold the tubing in place are fragile. The sloping lid makes it hard to keep the poly filter material in place while placing the filter into the tank. Otherwise, this is the kind of filter I was looking for to place in my 10 gallon tank.

I received it today. The boxes were perfect / no damage. I open the box and the item is broken into pieces. No instructions whatsoever. I didnt know they could make plastic so thin and cheap. Dont buy this piece of china junk. Spend a little more and buy a name brand.

works well, very economical. After replacing my third h.o.b. filter in the last 8 mos. I wanted something reliable. I had to run a small power head to help with flow and thwart algae growth that had increased due to the poor hob filter performance.

Mardel Maracyn-Two Powder Packets Water Treament (Freshwater), 24ct

Mardel Maracyn-Two Powder Packets Water Treament, 24ctMaracyn 2 is a synthetic form of the tetracycline class of antibiotics and is more broad spectrum than others. This is a very effective antibiotic which can be combined with Maracyn or used by itself. It is one of the best antibiotics that can be purchased for fish disease. It is also very safe so overdosing shouldn't cause any issues. One thing to note is that this product like all tetracycline type antibiotics become dangerous after they have expired. Once the expiration date passes it must be disposed of.

This medication is especially effective for septicemia and fin/tail rot. It can also be used to treat popeye and dropsy. Another benefit of this antibiotic is that it acts as an anti-inflammatory, helping to reduce redness and swelling.

Make sure you remove any carbon/chemical media from your aquarium filter when using this. If you keep this media in, it will absorb the medication and potentially cause antibiotic resistance. Also make sure you treat for the stated time. Like any antibiotic, not following the proper dosage and timings can make it ineffective and again lead to resistance as only some bacteria are destroyed while the others that survive mutate and proliferate.

Also just a tip, add some Aquarium Salt to the aquarium while treating for disease as this will help in healing, as well as help prevent advantageous parasites from complicating things further. Do not use regular table salt as it contains iodine! Aquarium salt is cheap, available on Amazon and it will last you forever.

*****

Update:

Just thought I would add some more info to this post as this is really the only available antibiotic for fish diseases on Amazon.

This antibiotic is effective in freshwater but not really in salt water aquarium's. Hard water will also reduce the effectiveness of this antibiotic as it is absorbed by dissolved calcium in the water.

Although this antibiotic can be used to treat dropsy, it can be especially taxing on the kidney's. Because dropsy is caused by the kidneys failing to remove water/fluids from the inside of the fish, it can make things much worse. Kanamycin is the best for this disease.

I have had pretty good success with mixing this antibiotic with fish food rather than treating the aquarium water. If you have a large aquarium, or don't have access to another tank, this method may be more economical and even more effective.

To treat this way you have to 1st be sure your sick fish are still eating!

-Take a small cup and throw in some pelleted fish food. Add some hot water, just a bit more than what would be necessary to cover all the food, then mix in half a packet of the Maracyn-2.

-Leave it for 1-2 hours to allow the food to soak up the solution. You should also swirl the contents a few times.

-Dispose of the leftover solution and place the treated pellets in the aquarium. Make sure your fish are eating them!

-If you choose to go this route, you should feed the fish these medicated pellets daily, and continue to do so a few days after the disease appears to have been cured.

You may want to try soaking the pelleted fish food you have in some tap water 1st to make sure they wont just completely dissolve in the water.

"New Life Spectrum THERA A" is a fish food available on Amazon which by itself, help's with fish diseases. I have found that these pellets do not breakup and are able to absorb quite a bit of the solution. It is available in numerous pellet sizes. Be sure to get the Thera A version.

If anyone has questions about this or treating fish diseases, leave a comment. I have had to learn quite a bit about fish diseases over the years as I attempted to extend the life of a fish that had Tuberculosis.

Maracyn-Two works very well. It actually cured dropsy in one of my fancy goldfish about 2 years ago. You should keep it on hand ready to use, because you have to act fast (if it is dropsy). It also works well on fin rot and I have used it 3 or 4 times for that. You don't have to be in a big hurry if it is fin rot.

I don't use a hospital tank. I treat the whole 30 gallon tank with this stuff. It does not seem to hurt the beneficial bacteria that get rid of ammonia. It also does not bother the other fish in the tank that are not sick. Doesn't faze them a bit, although you would think so, since it does make the water look a little yellow and cloudy. I can't think of a worse thing to do to a sick fish than to take it out of its home and into a hospital tank. Besides, it takes a month to get a new tank up and running (cycled). Just treat the whole home tank. Will take a lot of packets of this stuff, so the little 8 packet box won't do much good. Get the 24 packets. Don't be afraid to use this stuff. It won't hurt anything.

The directions are pretty good. Read them all, not just on the box, but inside. The diagnostic chart inside is very good. The only thing I thought was vague in the instructions was what to do if you want to do 2 5-day treatments back to back. I think the best advise is to stop after the first 5-day treatment and do the water change and put carbon in, for 3 days. Then after that 3-day "rest" period do the second 5-day treatment. But you probably won't need it. If you do, another approach would be to try a different med, like Maracyn Plus maybe. These Mardel meds are the real deal.

Note this Maracyn-Two is for freshwater. I think there is a separate product for salt water.

By the way, I would not use potted plants in the aquarium. The little bit of dirt on the root ball will have lots of foreign bacteria that your fish have never encountered before. Dropsy bacteria are in dirt. My fish that had dropsy, it started 4 days after I put a potted plant in the aquarium.

Compared to the cost at pet stores this is a great buy! If I were to by this same product at Petsmart today it would cost $25.19, where amazon is $12.54

I've used this for many years with lots of success. The only thing I haven't found a medicine for is clenched fins, however I have found that salt baths a few times a day with this medicine in there water really helps with many sicknesses.

I am extremely impressed with this product. Now, I'm not master fish keeper, but I noticed right away when my little red betta wasn't being himself. He would float at the top of his tank almost looking dead, and he was developing cottony white patches on his little bum and tail fin. I did some research and found he had a fungal infection. This product was recommended at my local fish store, so I gave it a try.

He lives in a very small tank so I only put a tiny pinch in his water after doing a full water change. The next day, his white patches are almost COMPLETELY gone, and he's swimming around like he used to, eating enthusiastically, and has the life put right back in him.

This stuff is a life-saver! I'm impressed with how quickly it worked, and relieved I don't have to worry about my little guy any more.
