Seachem Ammonia Alert

Many people have had problems with this product. I sure didn't! It's important to note that this product can read 0ppm Ammonia, even while a salicylate test kit reflects plenty of ammonia. "Total ammonia" measures ammonium and "free" ammonia. The former isn't so bad, the latter is. More on this below, if you're really interested.

When my kids came home from a school carnival with 6 goldfish, I figured we'd wing it. A few days later we lost our first fish. Another few days, and another fish lost, and I bought the Seachem based on positive reviews I read elsewhere. At the same time, I had the water tested at Petsmart. The petsmart test said ammonia was high, and after letting the Seachem adjust overnight, it agreed. A few partial water changes later, and the level was dropping, but still not zero. I ordered an API test kit, and it reflected just what the seachem did. Finally, I got some filter media from a friend's tank, and the nitrifying bacteria got going properly. Ammonia dropped to zero, and the seachem reflected this too!

I had no luck with the "quick start" and other products that allegedly contain live bacteria. Only the filter media seemed successful in seeding the tank with the good bacteria.

All in all, the Seachem functioned perfectly, and it really helped as a visual indicator and daily reminder that things were not going well in the tank. I'm now quite confident that the seachem will indicate if ammonia levels rise again.

Now for the nitty-gritty: I believe so-called "ammonia remover" products bind ammonia into ammonium. While I tried these, I never saw a substantial drop in ammonia from it. My thinking is that these products attempt to reduce ammonia, but the problem is that ammonium breaks into ammonia at higher pH, and higher temperature. I'm not sure if there's anything you can do about that. I've read on the Internet that the salicylate test does not reflect "total ammonia" (a term that refers to ammonium + ammonia), but it really does both according to the API instructions and by looking at the chemistry, the test creates conditions to convert all ammonium to ammonia. It measure the total. The seachem measures purely free ammonia according to their site.

First off, remove the plastic covering the sensor disk! I saw one of these in a friend's aquarium where they hadn't done that so they assumed the "safe" readings they were getting meant their tank was doing great.. not so! I guess they figured it looked so simple they didn't need to read the instructions first, but that's a fairly obvious thing to overlook!

Second, this is the exact same sensor material used in Seachem MultiTest Ammonia Test Kit. That test only tests for harmful free ammonia (NH3), but to be honest the test is a bit of a pain with having to time the test.. I never liked pulling it out, having to deal with the tiny little disks in the container, and waiting 15 or 30 minutes for the results.. but this alert is already ready to read (the color scale is not the same however, because of the longer "exposure" time).

Third, kits like the API Ammonia Test Kit measure TOTAL ammonia (NH3 and NH4). If you have chloramines in your water you WILL have tend to have false positive readings because of the ammonium formed when you use dechlorinator on your water (such as Seachem Prime. It doesn't mean you water is dangerous, it simply means that the chloramine has been converted into ammonium, and the API test can't tell the difference. I've had my tap water test as high as 2ppm for "ammonia" with the API test right after a water change the Seachem test would show 0. The doesn't mean the Seachem test is wrong or inaccurate, it's just more specific just like this alert disk.

Because of the issue with chloramines in my tap water cycling a new tank is a frustrating experience trying to use the API kit. I would constantly see positive "ammonia" readings while I could see my nitrites had spiked and had gone to 0 and I was seeing increasing amounts of nitrates, but using these disks simplifies the process. A partial WC can be done as the disk starts to turn blue in a fish-in cycle (or if you are dosing ammonia for a fishless cycle, you can add ammonia a little at a time until the disk turns dark blue), and the effect can be seen quickly as the disk changes color from blue to green (or even almost yellow). I think it's one of the best products available when you can't rely on the total ammonia readings from the API kit.

I used the ammonia alert to cycle my new aquarium (29g planted) with raw ammonia. Ten drops was enough to get it to show green(alert). Once I started getting nitrites, I cut it back to five daily drops. The indicator would go from green to yellow in approx. eight hours. Once the aquarium cycled, it has stayed yellow despite gradual addition of fish population. This has been verified by numerous ammonia tests by my fish store whenever I bought more fish. One caveat on use: Be sure to remove the plastic strip on the back before putting in the water. It would be easy to overlook.

If your like me your tap water has ammonia in it already, when using a water conditioner the ammonia is turned into a less harmful version, however it still shows up on water tests. This little reader can tell the difference between that and "free" ammonia, which is the most harmful version. In fact, some of the negative reviews stating that their ammonia levels were off the chart when checked with a test kit probably are seeing the conditioned ammonia and not the harmful ammonia.

IMO this is well worth it in your aquarium.

Save your money and just go with the regular water testing strips. It's not only cheaper, but it also works. The label says that it takes a few days for it to adjust and give out accurate readings, but I've had it since last week and it still reads "alarm". I, panicked, kept constantly changing 25% of the water and after a few days of this with no change in the reading I decided to bring out my strips and use those. Sure enough my water quality wasn't lacking and is just fine. So I wouldn't trust this product. It would be nice if it was effective but it hasn't been proven anything to me.

Seascape Double Sided Aquarium Background - 24 in. High - (Sold by foot)

I wanted the blue side. Unfortunately the black side is darker so when you light the aquarium, the darker side shows through. So, if you like the black ground with the branches (which camoflages black filters and themometers nicely, it's fine.

The only benefit I see to having the blue ground also, then, is that when you wrap it around the sides like I did, from the side of the aquarium, you see the blue instead of plain paper.

Unless you plan on not lighting your aquarium, don't plan on being able to use the blue ground.

Most are made by Marineland,I have had three of these and everyone has bleed through showing print lines as well as dark spots that spread all over. I blocked out the back with black construction paper and it still bleed through. All I have is an Aquarium floresint bulb that is 48 inches long. I don't believe quality control was checked, on this product. I'm having problems with the company. Dry tanks small tank this is fine but for 40 or above nothing last have tried 3 different backgrounds 6 pictures that all were defective. Some would make it a week even two then dark spots, then it gets worse. Save your receipts an contact Marineland. Just wanted to let others know.

Aqueon LED Aquarium Light Fixture, 36-Inch

Bought this on a whim when my Coralife lighting died after 2 years, unfortunately I bought the wrong size locally. I still plugged it in and put it on my 65 gallon tank to see if it was worth ordering the right size boy was it ever! I am excited about the new light, even though it hasn't arrived yet. I had to go buy a Marineland LED Single bright in the meantime and the difference between the two is astounding! The aqueon, especially with it's changeable lights, is well worth it!

Edit: Correct size arrived, the light output is AMAZING! Don't waste your time on Marineland LED fixtures! This is more bang for the same cost, and you can change the LED strips yourself which you can't do with marineland!

I should note that I have 2 light strips in it currently, it comes with one and supports 3, so be aware of this. The initial light output is still more amazing than marinelands which has no support for extra lights. Be sure to pick up 2 more tubes of lights if you want the max light output, but you wont be disappointed with the initial light output.

It took 3 shipments but once were able to install this light we loved it (the first two arrived damaged but thanks to Amazon's easy return/replacement process we were finally able to get a good one!)!

It is very bright on the standard setting, and shines a softer bluish light for the night-light setting. It fits perfectly on our aquarium and shines a very clear/white light it isn't yellowish or "dingy" looking like some other aquarium lights can be.

The operation is simple enough that our 10 & 5 year old are both able to turn it on/off but it is not so flimsy that it can be accidentally turned on/off.

We now have very happy fish!

No problems with the set up. I have a 125 gal aquarium that is 72in long so I purchased two lights. As usual LEDs produce a brilliant white light that shows all the details. I have been interested in LED lighting for my aquariums for some time. Most are more expensiove than I would like. This one from Aqueon was just right for my budget. But beyond cost, it provides plenty of light in a pleasing color for my 65 gal aquarium and the the moonglow lights are a special treat. I am an aquarist with 5 large (>40 gallon) tanks with live plants. I grew weary of dealing with annual bulb changes and electric bills. I began researching LED lights as an alternative. The general principle is that they work well but are expensive. Then I found this light. It represents Aqueon's foray into the "moderately priced" LED market. A great priceyou get the fixture and one white bulb, but you can order two more to increase light intensity or enhance color. There was little or no information available on which bulb was correct for plants, or indeed if any of them were, but I decided to take a chance and ordered one, with two bulbs from a different supplier so I could have a "high-light" tank. This is where the fun began.

First, the fixture is actually quite nice and the single white bulb DOES allow plants to grow. They are growing slowly, but to be fair the tank is young and it sometimes takes a while for new plants to develop root systems before they take off and you spend every saturday morning trimming, and then every saturday afternoon running bags to whatever pet store wants them in exchange for credit that when you consider the gas you burned allows you to lose only slightly less money than you would have. Nice quality for the money, which is typical of Aqueon products. Not top of the line, but they work and a are a good choice if you make less than 250K a year. And the night lights are beyond cute and my corys seem to love them.

Now for the nightmare. The first bulbs arrived from a different supplier and were poorly packed and smashed to bits. The supplier was helpful and responsive, although I waited two weeks for their shipment to come in. The second replacement shipment arrived in a giant tube that was so large and so padded that they could have included an Ohio-class nuclear submarine in with the bulbs. These too were smashed beyond recognition. Clearly, the bulbs had been damaged prior to shipping.

I canceled the order and requested a refund. I am sure they are working on it. More googling revealed a rumor that Petsmart had purchased Aqueon. I liked Petsmart, except for the one time when we were there someone dumped a pit bull mix puppy in the parking lot and the manager begged for all customers to help catch it, and my daughter was the one it ran to and then it became one of those "oh s***, we now have a puppy" moments. To their credit they gave us a free vet checkup, food, and some toys for taking it home. And the pupply did turn out to be a great dog except for her eardrum splitting bark and a tail like a scythe that could clear a table full of stuff in a nanosecond. And she had prickly fur too. And she ruled the house for the next 14 years. But I digress. I figured that if Petsmart had in fact purchased Aqueon, then they were the logical people to call to find a bulb for the fixture that they were now manufacturing. Alas, a mumbling voice on the phone informed me that my 36 inch fixture had been discontinued. Back to the internet where a second bulb is now on order from a different supplier. I hope that I get one in time before the entire line is discontinued. If indeed that is true.

Aqueondecide what you are manufacturing and what you are not. Communicate this with suppliers. Find out why the bulbs are so impossible to find, why the supply is so minimal, and who is smashing them to bits. Do some research so people with just fish, fish with plants, and marine folks can make the correct choice without guessing. Include two bulbs with the fixture even if you have to raise the price a bit. Or make it an option. Research manufacturing specific bulbs with specific spectrums for different applications. Solve the bulb problem, and you will sell a zillion of these because they have the potential to be the only decently priced LED fixture on the market. And one that is of very nice quality for the price.

I purchased this because I have several items in my 55 gallon fish tank that I wanted running at the same time. This one is by far better than the other model I had gotten awhile back. I always felt that one had air leaks. I love that I can adjust them so I have the proper air flow coming out of those that need more and those that need less. I do however think I may need to go to a larger air pump now as I don't think mine has enough power for all 4 but I had questioned that before hand.

For multi vavles...this is a pain...better to get the valves that just has a lever....this product works okay...but if you spend 10's of dollars on the aquarium....spend another dollar on a better valve....since you use it everyday when feeding you fish....the company is great...fast efficient....but the need to get the all metal valves.

i was disappointed in this product. it came with a small crack in the top of the glass not leaking water but it is noticeable. a few days after i revived this product in the mail i went into a local pet store to surprisingly find it for $32.50 that angered me. and to find out that this product did not come with a heater (in the description) witch costs around 1825 dollars around my location big bummer. over all the product works just fine just a few disappointments so don't get your hopes up!

This is my very first aquarium and, for a starter aquarium, I am very happy with it... but as I learn the ropes, this kit leaves me wanting a bit more of quality from my tank.

My goal is to build a sophisticated looking tank, and the silicone sealant in the corners of the tank are so so obvious that it defeats my goal. However, for a kid's room or for beginners? Would be great!

The lighting is very strong and that is good for people who want to heavily plant their tank, but not so good for people who don't. You may have to replace it with a weaker bulb if you don't plan to plant your tank.

The filter is garbage. The media cartridge is just this flimsy cotton pouch filled with carbon, the filter was crap and the media cartridge was crappier. I couldn't even sell it off for $5 on craigslist so I threw it out and bought a Fluval C2 which is probably one of the best hang on back filters you can get for your tank nowadays.

With the fluval filter, aqueon full spectrum lighting, my plants and fish are flourishing and it is so awesome to see. My next tank will be something more expensive, but this was definitely a good cheap choice for me being my first tank and I liked it more than the other brands as far as a starter tank goes.

Tetra Cube Aquarium Kit, 3-Gallon

The Tetra Cube Aquarium Kit is a great starter aquarium. The tank is essentially a cube made of lightweight but good quality plastic that looks great and is just the right size to be noticeable without taking up too much space. The only downside to the aquarium is that the included in tank filter is really not effective. The filter essentially uses the included air pump to push bubbles through an intake which also forces water into the filter and then through a filter cartridge. The design is simple but the end result is only basic filtration. Fortunately the notched lid easily accommodates the Azoo Mignon external filter AZOO Mignon Filter 60 which works very well to keep the tank clean without the costly filter cartridge replacements.

The Lid is pre-notched so it is easy to hang an external filter (such as the Azoo Mignon)

The lid easily falls into the tank when you try to remove it.

The LED light is not adjustable.

The included pump is rather low quality and known to fail after 1-2 years use.

This tank is a cut above others in the size and price range. It looks nice, not so much like a childs toy, and the lid has pre-cut sections that allow for a different or additional filter, which you may want to consider.

The included filter is a Whisper 3i, a tiny air driven internal. It actually functions fairly well as a low maintenance mechanical and bio-filter if you replace the floss/carbon "cartridge" with a permanent piece of sponge that is simply rinsed out in tank water regularly. The filter must be situated with the outflow at or above the surface. The hidged top to the filter may or may not stay on, it isn't needed so chuck it if it comes off or you will constantly find it floating in the tank. The included air pump is sufficient to run the filter, but is not strongeven adding certain types of check valves may be too much for it. Plan on situating it above the water level. There is space cut out of the plastic lid that allows for a small HOB if you want more filtration.

The tank itself is a lightweight cube on a black plastic base. The small size limits your choice of inhabitants, but a single male Betta will do well. Two or three male guppies can be gorgeous. Female guppies get larger and if you do mix sexes the males will constantly harass the females and the tank is a bit small to allow them to hide or evade the attention. A couple dwarf frogs, a dwarf crayfish, or ornamental shrimp are other options. Small fish such as tetras or danios need to be in groups and are highly reactive making them better suited to larger tanks. There is ample room for a small heater for a Betta or other tropical. The acrylic/styrene scratches very easily so algae removal or gravel vacs need to be performed with great care. Gravel is optional, most consider it essential but in most cases it is not. Bare bottom tanks are easier to maintain and can be beautifully decorated with bogwood, plants, rock, and/or dried oak or Indian almond leaves.

The LED light fixture is just OK. It isn't particularly bright, and doesn't bring out a fish's colors very well. For even low light plants it isn't really bright enough, but very few small tank kits have good lighting.

All in all this is a good buy. For the price you get a nice looking little tank, plenty big enough for a Betta. Ignore internet experts declaring "Bettas need a minimum of 5 gallons" ... it's unsubstantiated nonsense, and merely someones personal opinion, or someone regurgitating someones elses personal opinion. Common sense should tell any sane person that keeping a live fish in a neon colored 4 inch plastic box is moronic even if it does say "for Bettas" on the package. This tank is perfectly suitable however.

I purchased this tank for my beautiful half moon betta Samuri, his gold mystery snail pal, & his newest pal as of yesterday an african dwarf frog. I had him in a 1.5 gallon & just really felt he needed more room. I researched every 2.5, 3, & 3.5 gallon on the market I could find. I was going to purchase the aqueon mini bow 2.5. I have the 5 galllon with 6 guppies and a mystery snail all living together & i love it! But after reading customer reviews on the 2.5 gallon version i quickly changed my mind. The mini bow 2.5 light is directly over the filter cartridge, which A) caused extreme algea blooms very quickly rendering the filter cartridge useless in only a weeks time & B) since the light is directly over the filter the whole tank is not properly lit up. Way too much of a design flaw more me. Then I was leaning toward the fluval spec 3, but its $70, & only 2.5 gallons. I just couldnt justify that kind of money for just 2.5 gallons. I was weary about this tank because i feel tetra products are cheap. It is cheaply made, but it looks very nice. The LEDs are suprisingly bright! The "whisper" filter is decent so far. More of a dull hum, with a soft like rain effect from the bubbles. I set it up about 24 hours ago. My betta has been happily swimming around, & the african dwarf frog is lazily sleeping on the mystery snail (lol). The betta likes the bubbles from the filter. Idk if i will keep the filter i havent decided yet. All depends on how often i have to change the catridge. The tank looks 3 gallons (sometimes it says 3 gallons, but it will only hold 2.5). The black base is cheap but doesnt look too bad at all. The lid is pretty thin. Im just going to be extra careful too not drop it, im sure it would crack easily. Overall I am very pleased with this purchase, and so are my pets!

For the price, I wasn't expecting the sun and the moon, and after reading other reviews I went in expecting the filter to be pretty sub-par. I had been shopping around for a more ideal aquarium for my betta that was in a shape I liked in a 3 gallon range, and didn't see many options.

I was a little concerned getting the tank shipped and possibly cracking, but it arrived perfectly fine. It was in a box in a box :)

I just got it set up and I am pleased so far. I like the sizeits just right for me! I feel much happier having my betta in a 3 gal tank rather than a 1 gal, and I think he agrees. I really like the cube shape, and that the edges are rounded. Feeling it, you can tell its cheap plastic, but the look of it is nice, particularly in the dark with the light on. It looks like a glass tank. I imagine the main difficulty will be in treating it gently to keep it scratch-free.

I was also able to carry it from the kitchen to my room with it mostly full though its a little heavy. The bottom base is also cheap plastic which is not flat across the bottom which makes carrying a little awkward, but it held up fine.

The light seems quite nice, I appreciate there is a on/off switch on it (my other tank came with a light that did not have one.)

The filter works ok as far as I can tellthere was nothing in the way of pictures or instructions, but it was only a few pieces and I figured it out. I wasn't sure how high it needed to be placed compared to the water line, I may fiddle with that more later. The current seems like it may be a little strong but just around where the water dumps in, but I can see if I can modify that or just get a different filterit seems like there are other good options that aren't very expensive. I have no idea which way you are supposed to face the filter, or if that even matters. I'm guessing probably not.

As for noise, it makes a soft buzz and some light water/bubble noise. It does bubble up at the back which can kind of push against the lid making a clacking noise as it moves up and down. It seems like you can kind of feel out an ideal height to minimize noise and current. I have mine placed so the spout is around 3/4 inch above the water line.

Several people had commented it is easy to drop the lid in the bowl. I've been careful so far and have not had a problem. I actually kinda like how tightly the lid rests against the top. I also really like that there is a small feeding hole, and at the back sections cut out for the light and filter, so you shouldn't have to take the lid off very often. The filter area is big enough you can substitute most any small filter if you prefer a different one. I think the lid is a great shape to be practical, and tries to be an unobtrusive as possible. I don't like the tanks that have the huge hood on them.

I would recommend people consider this setup primarily for the tank and light, which I think its still a decent deal price-wise.

I'm considering looking into adding a ghost shrimp or mystery snail now that I have a little more space.

UPDATE:

I've had the tank about 5 days now.

After some messing with the filter, the current still seems stronger than the betta likes. I've seen him swim under it, and it pushes him down. He seemed kind of restless too, or rests on plants oddly. Someone at the pet store just suggested to tie a knot in the tubeI ended up kinking it and tieing it with a twist-tie, and that has worked wonderfully. I've cut the output rate by about half. I would say just be careful not to cut it back too much, or if the water level goes down it will stop coming out at all.

As for the filter's effectiveness, I don't really know if its doing much or not, but at least its aerating the water. With my tank setup there shouldn't be a really high level of waste.

I may still go with a better filter in the long run, the one recommended by another post seems really good and not expensive, but this one seems sufficient for now.

My tank now also has a ghost shrimp and a blue mystery snail. There was some dissent with the betta at first, but now they seem to be getting along for the most part. I was surprised, the ghost shrimp really held his ownI picked a fairly large one, but figured if the betta wanted to he could still take him apart. The betta has been poking at him occasionally, but no harm done. I added some more plants which really helped since the ghost shrimp hides unseen by the betta most of the time.

I would recommend these companions for the tankit is really too small to consider other fish. Depending on your betta's personality and level of aggression, it may not get along with the shrimp, but it may so you just have to try with the knowledge the shrimp may not make it. I wouldn't want more than 1-2 shrimp in there so he's not feeling stressed seeing them all the time. So I'd say don't go overboard.

You also shouldn't get more than 1 snail for this size tank.

If you do decide to add companions, particularly with the shrimp make sure there is enough plants and other places for him to hide so he doesn't constantly have to contend with the betta. If you want to ensure the best care for the snail, do something to make sure there is good enough calcium levels for him. This can be as simple as putting in a cuttlefish bone, some seashells, or adding some calcium supplement to the water.

I actually took a bit of screen and cut it to fit on the bottom of the lid to prevent possible snail escape. I don't know how necessary this is since it'd probably be hard for him to get up past the filter and there isn't that much open area on the lid, but I figure better safe than sorry.

The tank is a little cloudy now, but I was experimenting with foods for the shrimp and snail, and they weren't eating the algae wafer right away. I know generally they eat scraps, but there's not much scrap with just one betta if its food he likes.

My betta seems a lot more active now than he was in the old 1 gal bowl. While larger tanks are always preferable, this seems like a great size if you don't want to go too big.
