Marina Hang-On Breeding Box, Large

Marina Hang-On Breeding Box, LargeI've been using this box for my young angelfish fry for a little over a week. The accompanying instructions were easy to follow. The parts fit together very well. One needs only an air pump and tubing to set it up. By adjusting the air flow with the supplied airline tube screw the outflow water stream can be adjusted down to slow dribble so the fry aren't sucked out. There are two sizes of grates for the outflow (I'm using the narrower slotted one for now). Even as slow as I currently have the water flow, the water temperature has been stable, and the water has stayed much cleaner than I expected it would. I am satisfied with this product.

It looks great but I have been unable to use it as of now because I did not realize that, for 1) the box does not allow for you to have a lid on your aquarium and I have to keep a lid on my aquarium at all times. And 2) The large box it too big to hang off the side of my 10 gal tank which is where I planned on putting and using it.

So over all the box looks like it will be a great breeder box if you keep in mind that it is too large for the side of a 10 gal and that you can not use a lid on the main aquarium when using the breeder box.

I bought this HO box to act as a mini refugium for my 10 gallon tank. I keep some fast growing plants in it I have had zero measurable nitrates since I got it. This box is designed to use a bubble lift to pull in water from the tank. This works ok but it creates a pretty loud gurgling noise and does not end up not moving much water. I like the noise and the water flow is adequate for my purposes but I don't think I would keep more than two or three small fish in it.

I would definitely NOT keep even one clown fish in this box unless it was hooked up to a powerhead. It would be easy to hook it up to a pump with some 1/2 inch tubing. This would really get the water moving. If you plan on using this as a breeding box I would strongly encourage you to be ready to do that.

The plastic is sturdy enough that I'm comfortable moving it around. It comes with a cover with a small hole in it held on by two very small slide clips. I lost one immediately but just using one is working well.

normally i keep a fry tank for moving fry into when they're first born, but it had a chemical imbalance that forced me to take the tank down a month ago. when my angelfish pair spawned last week, i thought i would let them try to raise the fry on their own for the first week to see what kind of parents they would make. i didn't want to set up the other fry tank because i assumed the parents were going to eat the fry and that would be it, but the parents turned out to be amazing caretakers!

the angels are in a community tank, so i put in a divider to keep the other fish away from the eggs. now the fry are starting to swim, and they can get around the divider and into the hungry mouths of the other inhabitants. this left me scrambling for a container to put the fry into. i quickly scanned amazon to see what kinds of options there were with prime shipping. this hang-on box struck me as the perfect tool, so i quickly ordered one up. prime shipping had it here in less than 48 hours.

this box is made for these situations, pure and simple. the fry are thriving in the same environment they were raised in for their first week of life, but are protected from all the other fish in a way that no net breeder can provide. i can control feeding much better than inside a larger tank. i don't have to worry about keeping another tank up and running between fry batches. and the tank is very customizable to fit most standard setups.

to keep the fry from slipping out the outflow, i used the included small grate cover and wrapped it in a wide sheer plastic ribbon. water flows through just fine, but the ribbon blocks the fry and any other particulate from entering into the main tank. the airflow pump is a bit noisy, but if you already own an aquarium, you're used to that.

this box is EXACTLY what i needed.

works great for my fry Would Recommend simple and ez to use. one thing i kept trying to find when buying was how far it hung off the tank i wanted to put it in back like a filter it hangs 4 inches so you will need 4 inches of clearance to hang it off the back of a tank against the wall
