Most "experts" agree that sponge filters are a great filtration option for fry tanks. I use this (with a Whisper 20 air pump) for a 10 gallon fry tank that has 35 cichlids in it. I've not lost a single fish and they've grown from 1/8" to an inch in a month. I'll be transferring them to a larger tank with a hang-on-back filter, but for my tiny new babies, I will only use this sponge filter. Having two sponges is great for when you need to borrow some bacteria to start another tank. Granted, there is no mechanical filtration---it won't remove particles from the water; but that's not a problem with a bare-bottom tank. Just goes to show, sometimes low tech is the way to go.

I use these as my only filtration in a 20 gallon tank housing a number of young apistos. I also use it as suplimental filtration (to a Fluval 306) in my 55 gallon although I believe if you had a couple of them in a planted 55 you could do without the canister filter altogether.

I have this and a small hang on the back filter in my fry tank (hang on the back gets turned off when fry are present) and this filters as much or more than the power filter. the head is adjustable so you can easily raise or lower it so that the discharge is at the water line, and the part with the sponges can be rotated to be in whatever position meets your needs (i like having them down, gives the most length)

It's not as bulky as some of the bigger sponges. It has more sex appeal than some of the huge ones.
