CaribSea Arag-Alive 20-Pound Special Grade Reef Sand, Bahamas Oolite

CaribSea Arag-Alive 20-Pound Special Grade Reef Sand, Bahamas OoliteThis sand is a beautiful white color, but is VERY FINE. If you want that, then this is great. It does look beautiful once it settles, and is great for sand sifting animals.

Even with a very gentle flow the sand gets swept around the tank or worse kicked up into the water column, turning the whole the whole tank milky white.

this "sand" is so fine that it continually clouds up your tank. Not at all what I thought I was ordering. Most saltwater aquarium sand I have used in the past was much courser and did not cloud up aquarium every time a fish kicked it up.

this "sand" is so fine that it continually clouds up your tank... washed it off and put it in tank, instantly the tank is cloudy. next morning, a lot better, but still a little dirty/cloudy to it. stirred it up, emptied the cloudy water out of 3/4 of the 55 gallon tank, filled with clear water and still does the same time... like I said, I think the sand is just so fine that it floats around in the water and gives it a cloudy appearance.

Want CaribSea Arag-Alive 20-Pound Special Grade Reef Sand, Bahamas Oolite Discount?

When I ordered sand, I was expecting there to be no water or moisture involved. But behold a mid-size bag full of sand and water. It is a little misleading because it does state 20 pounds (lbs), however I feel part of it is the water. I let the sand dry out for a week and then used the sand to fill up my sandbags for photography. If I had kids, this sound would be fun to play with and you can basically make sand castle or whatever you imagination may bring. However, this fine grade, smooth, soft to touch sand is great for weights, but will never buy again.

Power-Glo Fluorescent Bulb

Power-Glo Fluorescent Bulb, 40 Watt, 48 InchesBulbs had great prices and were packed VERY well. The description indicates T10, but the bulb is actually a T8 bulb. Allpet provided me with fantastic customer service. They called me back the same day after they physically checked the product to verify it was a T8. The type of bulb is important to know to see if its compatible with your hood. 2 of these bulbs were used in my 55g fresh water cichlid tank.

The color spectrum of this bulb is exactly what I was looking for to brighten the aquarium.

Local pet stores have limited selection of the many types of bulbs. Online I could get the exact bulb I wanted, for a delivered price below pet stores. My initial concern was possible damage of the 48" bulb, but it arrived extremely well packed. I was very happy with the transaction.

It is my opinion that this is the only bulb that gives my aquarium a pleasing natural hue, not to mention my fish seem to appreciate and thrive in its light spectrum. This item was hard to find until I came here to Amazon.com. Thank You Amazon.com for having this product available !!! I should purchase another one while they are still available.

Hydor Automatic Fish Feeder -Battery Powered, with Air Connection - Original EkoMixo

Hydor Automatic Fish Feeder -Battery Powered, with Air Connection - Original EkoMixoThis is my first automatic feeder. I've been using it continuously for ten months without any problems. When I go out of town, I have no worries about my fish.

The good:

it has worked reliably for me

it holds weeks worth of flakes

I haven't had problems with moisture, even without using the air input

adjustable feeding quantity

1 to 3 feedings/day

low battery warning

batteries lasted me 10 months with 3 feedings/day

The bad:

programming interface is poor. The 24-hour clock starts *at the time you set it up*, which means if you want the first feeding at 7am you have to wait until 7am to program it.

I can't program it without the manual. It's not simple enough to figure out, and there isn't an instruction plate on the unit. Now that I have to change the batteries, I have to go digging for the manual.

the program is inflexible. There is no way to pause the program, or to make the unit do a one-time extra feeding. The multiple-feeding/day interval is unchangeable (12 hours for 2x, 6 hours for 3x).

bulky with limited mounting options. The unit has to sit on top of your tank, with the feeder output over an opening. The base of the unit (the black part in the picture) is about 4.5", with the feeding slot (clear plastic part) extending past the base with a 1" wide opening.

I had to experiment over a few feedings to find a position that would get all the food into the water. I put velcro strips on the base and attached it to a heavy drink coaster with a felt bottom. It doesn't move around and won't scratch my acrylic top.

Despite the inflexibility, I'm happy with this thing because I really have no worries when I'm on vacation.

Have had the product for a few months now. It is working and seems to be reliable. Only wish you could program it by entering a time into the feeder. You have to set it at the time you want to feed the fish and then it just counts the hours until the next feeding...once a day, twice a day etc. The amount you feed depends on how wide you open the hopper. Make sure you have enough food in the feeder since it works off of gravity and the rotating hopper to drop the food into your tank.

My husband has a 55 gallon for mollies and I have a 5 gallon for a Betta. He did not want to use the automatic feeder that I recently purchased and told me to buy the tetra vacation gel for the 55 gallon. I decided to set up the auto feeder for Betta and my husband dropped the Tetra Gel in the Molly tank. We left for 4 days and when we returned the water in the auto feeder was not cloudy, Betta alive and happy while the 55 gallon tank, the water was cloudy, the mollies did not look well and I found alot of the Tetra gel residue. I purchased my feeder else where cheaper, and can say it was worth the purchase. However, there are some cons I would like to point out.

Cons:

1) Cannot set a designated time;

2) Container bit small for supposedly 1 months feeding; guess if you feed once a day it will last a month; and

3) No clamp to support to fish tank only a couple of velcro strips

I was kinda worried about how well it would work, since I bought it here on Amazon and the reviews made it look kinda sketchy, but I've owned it for nearly half a year now and I have not once had a single problem with it. I did notice though that if you place it over the surface where the bubbles from your air stone come up, the inside of the feeder does get a bit of condensation causing the food to clump a little and for it to shut down. But as I found out after doing a little bit of research, that is expected of ANY feeder, and the condensation will usually KILL it as well, so I guess this feeder is a toughy.

Want Hydor Automatic Fish Feeder -Battery Powered, with Air Connection - Original EkoMixo Discount?

First of all, setting up this feeder is the simplest thing ever. There is only one button, which pressed repeatedly, allows to select 1, 2 or 3 meals/day that have been preprogrammed at the most logical time interval of each other (that is 24h, 8h, and 6 hours, respectively). The first meal is repeated at same hour each day, which coincides with the time you set the feeder. It's up to you to decide when you want to feed your fishes the first meal each day. I don't see any problem with that, unlike many other people before me did.

The canister that holds the food is a lot bigger than you can see in the picture, most of it being hidden in the main body of the feeder. It probably can hold same amount as one of the Tetra 29 g (1.02oz) of flake food. That's (a lot) more than a month worth of food for my fishes, so no worries here. The amount of food that is dispensed at each time can be adjusted and if the amount of food still doesn't seem to be sufficient for the number of fishes you may have, I would suggest to try more frequent meals, I mean more than 1 or 2. 3 meals a day is a little too much from my experience, while 1 is not quite enough. 2 meals a day should be ideal I'd say. Another option would be buying some feeder that is double in price or even buying 2 feeders and put them to run in the same time. I guess you have to be inventive, but for any normal amateur aquarist this type of feeder is ideal and meets their needs.

The mounting is done the most natural by placing the feeder on the hood of your aquarium, and nothing else being necessary to keep it in place, although 2 velcro strips are provided. No clamp is provided but I believe that is obvious from the image. If, for any reason you can only mount the feeder by using a clamp, the alternative is to get a cheap clamp from a Dollar store but my tanks need cover anyway or else the fishes will jump out.

I even like that there is the option to connect it to the air pump so clumping is prevented. I don't know if that would happen otherwise, but I decided to use the air as well. The pressure isn't high enough to see flakes flying , but the producer made sure that the air supply is cut in the time of feeding to prevent an overdose. That being said, I believe this feeder to be very good for what it is intended, and paying more would only matter for bragging rights, not performance.

There is an update I'd like to add to what I have previously stated. After some time using two of these feeders, I have noticed that the small plastic clips that keep the canister in the body of the feeder have a very good chance to break. So you have to be careful when inserting or taking out the canister for a refill and also make sure you buy a good, intact unit. I am however considering different remedies, since plastic clips aren't going to set me back now. On a market invaded by cheaply made chinese products this isn't a surprise or is it (this product is actually Italian)?

biOrb Decorative Feng Shui Pebbles, Chinese Green

biOrb Decorative Feng Shui Pebbles, Chinese Greenordered the green and they are not! they are a mix from black to almost reddish. there are only a few in a package and they are rather large for a small tank and should be called rocks not pebbles. however, i did keep them and they are working mixed with other items and make my 5 gal. tank look like a river bottom.

Mine came with about the same as the one in the picture. The larger ones are dark green and the smaller ones are light green. For all you people who want a lot in one package, this is not the product for you, unless you want to triple the quantity like I did. But don't turn away yet! There are just enough to cover the bubble tube for the biOrb! And of course the color is beautiful in water and they don't cloud it either.

When the packed arrived I thought I had accidently been sent the white stones. They are infact the green ones, the package said. Once I opened them and rinsed them off they looked slightly more green in water. I would say half the stones are white and half are green and white. Still not bad looking rocks for your fish tanks, just not what I expected.

BiOrb 15L Flow Aquarium, Black

BiOrb 15L Flow Aquarium, BlackWhen my two boys asked for betta fish, I started looking into desktop aquariums, since I didn't want to keep fish in tiny bowls. After a lot of debate, I decided on the Biorb Flow 15 and ordered two of them. Wow, are they pretty once they're set up and all decked out with plants and accessories! I originally thought our only option would be a cheap-looking old style aquarium, but the Flow is so cool looking, it actually adds to the decor of their rooms.

But pretty is only good if it works, right? Set up was a breeze, really couldn't have been simpler. I bought Hagen 25 watt mini heaters for the tanks since the Biorb heater kit is so expensive, and they work great. Clamped the tubing with paper clips to minimize the flow of the filter (bettas don't like to be tossed around) and was pretty much ready to go. A few days later, we brought home our fish.

In the first hour they were out of the bags, we had a disaster. The Biorb ceramic media is very large, and if you aren't careful to lay it properly, you can wind up with some fairly large gaps. One betta went exploring down in the media and got wedged in the corner of the tank, between the media and the glass. I got him out, but he was pretty shell-shocked. Fortunately, he recovered within a day and is doing fine.

I worried about the size of the tanks, since they're on the small side, but these little guys seem very pleased with their new homes. I've added lots of plants, grass rings, Feng-shui pebbles, topiary balls, and leaf hammocks, so they have numerous hiding places and things to swim around and investigate. I think the lighting is just fine, and the opening is more than big enough to do whatever you need to do in there.

The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is the price. After the initial expense (which isn't small), you pretty much have to purchase all Biorb accessories if you want them to work with the tank. And they're pricy. It took three packages of pebbles per tank to get the look I wanted, three topiary balls apiece, two grass rings, and three plants (each). At Biorb prices, that's a chunk of change. But I'm not sorry, because they look great and our new little friends seem to be thriving!

Pros: Sleek looking design

Small footprint

Cons: Poor lighting. (very small LED light that only lights the middle of the tank not the sides at all.)

not enough lighting for live plants

You need to remove the light in order to get into the tank which makes it near impossible to see what youre doing inside the tank.

The small opening also makes it extremely difficult to catch fish in even a small net.

I could go on and on but honestly I've given this tank enough of my time. Save some money and frustration, if you're looking for a nano tank, and buy a fluval chi or nano.

It's really am attractive tank and has room for a few plants and a fish. If I was going to have more than 1 fish I would def get the 30. Cons: the "corners" can be annoying to the eyes, the instructions say not to cover the filter base-it gets very dis colored so you're pretty much forced to buy a cover or go against the instructions and cover it with rocks.

I just have a Betta fish in there and it seems to be a perfect fit. The light is plenty bright for me and I don't mind the size of the opening. The only downside is the little pump that comes with it is kind of loud. According to the website it will get better with time and I also clipped the hose so not quite as much air is pumping through...this helped. It is a great aquarium if you want something compact and light...it is plastic and plastic can scratch, though.

Como Fish Tank Aquarium Red Clear Plastic Air Pump Check Valves 5 Pcs

Como Fish Tank Aquarium Red Clear Plastic Air Pump Check Valves 5 PcsI never say that an item is worthless unless it is and these check valves were the worst things that I've ever purchased anywhere, anytime, ever. I have a commercial air pump and these check valves darn near made it stop pumping they're so bad.

When I tried to pull the air hose off these check valves to take them out, they came apart in two separate pieces. Useless! I wouldn't recommend these to my worst enemy. Well , maybe to worst enemy but no one else.

I wouldn't have given them one star but at least they arrived from Hong Kong.

I used these for my 10g air pump and it works great. They stay secure by the piping and they work just as they should. Not flimsy or easily breakable from the way I've handled them so 5 star product for quality and price combo.

This gravel looks great in my betta's 5 gallon "natural" aquarium, though I bought the 5 lb size. It is much lighter and much more attractive (in my opinion) than the standard Petco River Rock Shallow Creek Aquarium Gravel, 20 lbs.. I find the River Rock one to be too dark and, frankly, ugly. The size is great and perfect for the roots of my Anubias. The light color accentuates the colors of my fish and decor.

baby biOrb 4-Gallon Moonlight Aquarium with Light Fixture

baby biOrb 4-Gallon Moonlight Aquarium with Light Fixture, BlackI have one of these (the earlier version, no moonlight) in my office on my desk. I love it! I keep one gorgeous male betta in it and he is thriving. The pump is extremely quiet. I don't worry about keeping the pump above the water level and it works just fine. The provided gravel is part of the filtration system; you can cover it with large, shiny rocks but I don't mind how it looks on its own. I really enjoy the decorations you can use in the baby biOrb; I have the small grass ring that goes over the bubble tube in the center and several bright, weighted "plants". Haven't tried the fuzzy ball decorations yet but I will when I get tired of the current set-up. My betta seems very healthy and happy. I keep the water level lower than recommended so he has plenty of surface where he can get air. This has been a very peaceful, pretty addition to my office.

Looks great on a high coffee table and even the anti-fish husband gave it a compliment on how cool the night light looks.

Pretty low maintenance with 25% water changes weekly and fully changes one a month it almost looks after itself its so easy. You can probably reuse the filters if you clean them and add new media.

I added a heater, skipped the biorb stones for petshop cheaper ones, I decided on real plants, a betta, some red cherry shrimp, adding a top to the bubbler and a valve which means my betta has no problems with the current & his long fins (he is a halfmoon and currently flaring right next to the air vent the cheeky minx!).

One note for anyone buying this. Buy a valve for your pump or you may find the water siphons back into it when you switch it off $2.00 well spent!

Both packaging and website description are misleading. The photos don't show the air tubing and power cord which are unsightly and make it very difficult to place in your home. The external tubing and air pump unit are supposed to be placed higher than the water level! Also, the supplied media is unattractive and is the only media (gravel) they recommend using (it's brown). I definitely expected a better product for the money it cost. I sent my baby biOrb back..and really wouldn't recommend this product.

I transferred my betta into this tank after about a year in a much smaller (and cheaper) filtered tank and I am so happy I decided to get it. There isn't much light in my apartment so the moonlight feature stays on all the time, which is fine; but it looks especially beautiful at night. I decided not to buy biorb decorations or rocks just because I already had some and honestly they were a bit pricey for my taste anyways. This tank is also a bit expensive, but it's totally worth it. It not only looks great, but it is very functional. The filter works great and cleaning is easy. I've had the tank for about a month now and I would gladly recommend it to anyone looking to buy. I would definitely buy from Biorb again in the future.

Want baby biOrb 4-Gallon Moonlight Aquarium with Light Fixture Discount?

I've been very happy with this tank but the moonlight feature was a waste. Because I keep it pretty far away from windows, the regular daylight wasn't enough to trigger the switch from moonlight to daylight. I had to keep a lamp on to keep the tank light on, which is pretty silly. There is an option for manual on/off but then you give up the moonlight... either both lights are on, or neither. If you get enough light in the room, this could work for you. But the directions caution against keeping it in direct sunlight because the curve of the tank could cause a fire.

TOM Aquarium Temp Alert Fahrenheit Digital Thermometer

TOM Aquarium Temp Alert Fahrenheit Digital ThermometerGot this for my 29G tank and it works as described. It's much better than the "peel & stick" thermometers. Displays the time and temp. The alarm/alert can be turned if needed and the temp probe is plenty long. If you own an aquarium this is what you want to maintain the perfect temp. Also works great with water changes. You can get the "new" water the perfect temp BEFORE you add it to your tank.

This is a really great product...if only it worked longer than a few months. Worked great for the first 3 months I had it, now it reads a constant 10 degrees higher than what the temperature really is. I've tested the water with 3 other thermometers and they all ready 79.5 F while the TOM Aquarium Temp Alert reads 88.7 F. I would pass on this product

Buy TOM Aquarium Temp Alert Fahrenheit Digital Thermometer Now

This a good thermometer for the money. It works quite well. The only issue I have is the alarm when the water gets above 80 degrees. In the summer it is difficult to keep the water below 80 and the tone gets to be annoying.

Read Best Reviews of TOM Aquarium Temp Alert Fahrenheit Digital Thermometer Here

This thermometer only displays the temp where the probe is, not room and water temp as their misleading claim. The temp alarms (2 not 4 as claimed) are preset to alert you if the temp drops below 75 or above 82 degrees, they claim it has 4 alerts which is not true . 75 degrees is max for my tank so alerts are useless. So be sure you can use it before you buy it. I bought 4 different types of digital thermometers and put all 4 in one tank with the probes side by side and all 4 have a different reading. According to my floating thermometer this one reads 2 degrees hotter.

Want TOM Aquarium Temp Alert Fahrenheit Digital Thermometer Discount?

In contrast to what I read in another review here before purchasing the thermometer, I found that the high and low temp alerts are preset to (if I remember right) 76 and 82 or so. This is not workable for me (I'm in Tucson and keep my house at 85 or so in the summer) so I returned it. Part of the description also talks about 4 alert features. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what this means. That each of the two alerts turns both on and off?

Hydor ETH 200 In-Line External Heater 200w 1/2" hose

Hydor ETH 200 In-Line External Heater 200w 1/2' hoseThis is the best heater for any tank (sized appropriatly) using a canister filter. Simply split the return line and install the heater. No extra equipment in the tank, no electrical connections in the tank. I noticed some reviewers are complaining of fittings being too small. Pay attention to what you are ordering! There are two diferent 200 watt models; one with 1/2" (12mm) fittings and one with 5/8" (16mm) fittings (all measurements are for inner diamenter). My canister uses 1/2" line so the 1/2" fittings work perfectly. I imagine the same thing is true for the 5/8" model.

Stopped working after about 8 months. Temp in tank dropped 12 degrees to room temperature. Took me a couple days to get a new one, so thats a couple days my fish were too cold and unhealthy.

Buy Hydor ETH 200 In-Line External Heater 200w 1/2" hose Now

I recently set up a 25 gallon rimless cube tank. I wanted to minimize what was hanging on the outside of the tank so I purchased this Hydor. After a long search it seemed Hydor was the only game in town for a inline heater. Well, it's great! Takes a few minutes to connect and that's it. No leaks, no fluctuations. I have it connected to my Eheim Ecco. Working for a month now in an unheated room and it is dead accurate and does not fluctuate. As some others noted it does make an audible click when it turns on but mine is inside a cabinet so it really is barely noticeable. Less than the click of a pen. And if it wasn't for that I'd have to check to even see if it's on.

Great product, stop looking this is it.

Have had the heater for almost a year now, and so far it works great for my 40 gallon tank. Only complaint is that it turns on and off very frequently (about every 2 minutes) with an audible click that can be quite a nuisance. Also, its exquisite sensitivity, which makes it turn on and off so frequently, makes me worry that it might wear out before long.

Want Hydor ETH 200 In-Line External Heater 200w 1/2" hose Discount?

I have gone through 3 of these heaters in the last few years. I was attracted to the design, and Hydor is about the only company making inline heaters.

Unfortunately I had all three fail. Two failed silently (stopped working, temp dropped on the tank) and the last one failed catastrophically and cooked everything in the tank.

Since I don't want to lose all my fish and shrimp again, I have gone back to the Eheim Ebo Jager in tank heaters. I have never had a problem with them. The only reason I changed was the slick design of the Hydors.

Coralife 05373 Aqualight Mounting Legs, Clear

Coralife 05373 Aqualight Mounting Legs, ClearThese legs fit great on my 24 inch aqualight. Please note they do not fit on my aqualight mini.

I highly recommend these legs for anyone who owns a coralife aqualight other than the mini.

I got this item as shown, and it was a bit of a process getting them attached to my Coralife fixture. Once I had them screwed in I had to find a way to space them just so on the fixture as not to off set the lighting from the tank or allow it to fall into the water. I had two people to help my properly seat the mounting legs so the hugged the tank and then tighten them into place. Even after everything was erected the mounts came loose and became very wobbly.

Buy Coralife 05373 Aqualight Mounting Legs, Clear Now

I ordered these after noticing the format of the mounting leg attachment.

I recently purchased online (at a "Bidding" site) a 4-bulb T5 fixure, that had a hinge-type (swing up) mount.

Unfortunately, I was saddened to find I was unable to use that style mount, due to my use of a sliding-glass lid setup.

The supplied hinge/light support required an overlapping of the tank rim, to attach on the inside of the tank.

Upon researching for a hinge solution, I noticed that these mounted in the same style horizontal track, that runs accross the front and back of the light fixture housing.

These legs fit those style fixtures perfectly!

If your fixture has these "dove-tail" slots approx. 1/4" wide.....these are your option!

BOOOM!...end of a issue!

Without reviewing the light system, because that is not what we are talking about here and can all agree that hi-end lighting is the best.

As far as the leg supports: For four pieces of molded plastic, and four metal inserts to hold lighting for some systems that may cost in excess of $300 these are crappola!

We understand that when you clean your tank and remove the lighting system you must be careful however, if you are not being perfectly careful these things will crack. The metal inserts are far from perfect, and the screws that hold the metal in place with the legs are ever so small.

The light system needs to be supported on these units there either has to be a better way to support the unit, or the support system needs to be revamped.

I suggest that if you found a better way to support the unit put it online. We would all appreciate the advice.

Hydor H2Show Bubble Maker Internal Venturi Air Pump for Aquariums is sadly under-described. It creates finer bubbles than what you can see in the video demo on YouTube. They circulate through the entire tank very well. It also comes with 3ft of quality soft black airline. The suction cups and clips are soft and I have no trouble removing them. They don't come apart when removed, if they do it is very easy to put the cups back on. The clips hold the airline, power cord and cord for the led lights. Very neat assembly, well thought out. I got plant material clogged into the diffuser and it was easy to completely sweep the channels clear with a bread twist tie. Because it is called a venturi I feared it might produce ozone, but it doesn't and I am happy about that. I wouldn't know how to use ozone in an aquarium. My only con about it would be that even after running it for a week it is loud and makes alot of vibration inside the tank. you don't hear it outside, but if you press your ear to the tank there is high noise and vibration in there. I'm going to try applying Vaseline to the magnet and see if that quiets it down. The diffuser is currently helping me nurse a sick Betta back to health. The meds deplete the O2 a bit, and she was kind of weak to have to come to the surface for a bit of air. She has been able to stay in her cozy places with this diffuser and get some rest. At first she stayed very near the diffuser where the greatest amount of air was flowing through. It looked like it was really helping her respiration and giving her just enough gentle water flow that the bacterial infection wouldn't be able to stick on her and keep spreading. I'm really happy with with this product, I wish I'd had one in this tank sooner. I want to start replacing my other bubblers with these in my other tanks. It's nice to not have to hang a pump on the wall above the waterline and try to stuff it with cotton so it doesn't rattle through the whole house. I just hope I can get it to be more quiet in the tank for the best fish health possible but as far as oxygenating the whole tank, you can see how well it works the minute you put it in and turn it on.

If lots of bubbles in your aquarium is your goal, this bubble maker is for you. It only took me five minutes to assemble and the bubbles it produced were enormous. I admit I only have a 29 gal. Tank, but I know it would be great in larger tanks. It provides a more than adequate amount of oxygen to your tank. I installed the bubble maker approximately 6 week ago and it has worked flawlessly since. The accessories I mentioned in the subject are sold separately but it adds impressive color to your tank. This unit is worth every penny and I highly recommend it for your tank.

Mini Bow Desktop Aquarium Kit - 1 Gallon

Aqueon 1-Gallon Mini Bow Aquarium Kit, BlackThis tank seems like a good, quality starting tank. Setup was easy and it came with everything I needed for my betta fish including water conditioner and food. Unfortunately my fish seemed to think that death was preferable to confinement. When I put first placed him in the the tank he seemed much more lively and active, but soon after I noticed that he seemed to be hiding underneath the filter. Thinking that perhaps the current was too strong, I turned it off while I thought of a way to dampen the current. But when I woke up the next morning to check on him I found that he had wedged himself into the small niche that is formed by the indent in the corner of the filter and died. Disappointing to say the least.

I'm giving the product 3 stars, because no one else has mentioned any sort of similar issue so perhaps my fish was just the William Wallace of its kind, but the indent in the filter seems unnecessary and most sources that I've read seem to think that you don't even really need a filter for betta tanks with less than 5 gallons. Couple that with a fish who prefers tight spaces and it seems like more trouble than it saves.

I'm going to get a second fish and update this review depending on how things go.

Just got this tank. Seems to be well built and is good for a betta, but not much else. My only complaint is the light bulb gets pretty hot and seems to deform the hood a bit. Not sure if this is going to cause any future problems.

It is an ideal tank size for a betta. The filter works just fine and not too strong for the betta. I like the two convenient open holes for easy feeding. The light seems to generate too much heat if it is turned on for a long period of time which can cause the top cover melting out. I put in about an inch of gravel at the bottom. The water looks so clean after a week later. I can now do the 50 percent water change on the weekly basic. The betta seems to be happy with it.

I like this tank so much I will soon get another!

For a few years I've enjoyed having a Betta in a globe fish bowl on my desk at work. Last November my little scaly friend passed away so I went looking for a new desk companion. Well there were TWO beautiful fish and I just couldn't decide, so I just bought both! (I'm going somewhere with this, I promise) I decided to keep one fish at home and the other at work but I obviously was going to need a new bowl as Bettas are not all that good together. Well I found the Aqueon Mini Bow here on Amazon and despite mixed reviews I thought I'd give it a try. And I'm glad I did. This tank is fantastic. It's INCREDIBLY quiet. So quiet that you have to check to see if it's turned on. Silent is the word.

Ok, so the reason I gave you back story on owning two bettas is this: My standard globe bowl at work I've cleaned 3 times in four months. My Mini Bow? None, Zero, Nata. AND it's still on it's first filter! This tank has a VERY simple filter style, it just sucks up water and lets it flow over the top of the filter before gently flowing back into the tank. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done VERY well. I think another thing that helps this tank stay clean and clear is my snail. He's very active, but he obviously doesn't clean the water, just the surfaces. So grab a snail when you pick up your betta as well.

There are two things that many of the negative reviewers have said about this tank that I've got solutions for.

Reviewer complaint one: Too strong of a current for the fish.

Solution: Fill your tank up with the correct amount of water. The tank has a specific recommended water line and when your water is at the correct level, the drop from the filter is almost none. Yes, there is a little current, but not enough that it looks like the fish is always having to fight it.

Reviewer complaint two: The hood gets too hot and starts to deform.

Solution: I didn't notice any SIGNIFICANT heat on mine when used for reasonable time periods (a couple hours at a time). But just in case other reviewer were right, I devised a wonderful double-benefit solution. A custom Heat Shield! (See my photo in the customer photos section) It's made of aluminum foil and electrical tape and takes maybe five minutes to construct/install. Just remove the screws from the clear plastic, then cut a piece of aluminum foil to size and secure it to the contours of the plastic with some electrical tape. Now the the top of my hood doesn't get warm even after being on for a few hours plus being that betta are tropical fish they prefer warmer water, so the heat shield also helps direct the heat into the water!

Pros:

Fairly Inexpensive

Inexpensive Filters

Long lasting Filters

VERY Quiet

Lit Hood

Feeding hole

Clean

Cons:

Two separate cords (one for filter, one for light)

UPDATE (4/11/12)

So I did in fact buy a second tank and oddly it did at first seem as though the current was a bit much for the fish with this tank. But there are a few possible reasons why this is the case. It MAY be possible that some tanks have a more powerful suction/filtration system, but I kinda doubt it. So here is what I think is going on. First, with the first tank I purchased, before I even turned it on I had a tall plant RIGHT in front of where the water spills over the top of the filter. I think this breaks up the current quite a bit. Second, the fish from my first tank has much larger fins. Third, the first tanks filter has been in use for a while and is probably dirty enough to slow down the water flow a little bit. Fourth, the fish in the new tank had been a lazy SOB for like 8 months. I think he may have been over feed while I was on vacation and may have developed a swim bladder issue. So he floated at the top fairly frequently. So take him from a no water-movement bowl to a tank with some flow and it is gonna look like he's being thrashed around. Fifth, the fish simply hasn't had time to adapt. After a week or so in the tank with the pump on he found a bunch of places that he likes to chill out it, with seemingly no current issues. BUT that doesn't mean I didn't feel the need to ease him into this tank transition by turning off the filter for periods of time.

So these are my suggestions for those with current concerns.

1. Get a tall plant and place it on the opposite side of the tank as the filter. Also put some little plants on the bottom. This gives your little fish plenty of places to relax.

2. Add an inline switch (kinda like a lamp toggle switch on a cord) Here's one from amazon:

Leviton 5410 Appliance Switch, Feed-Through Switch Rocker, Single Pole, Single Throw, 3A-125V AC, Brown This will make it easier to switch the filter on and off.

3. Give it time! If you just bought your fish or have had him in a bowl for a while he has been lazy for a long time. He just needs time to adjust.

All in all, my fish seems a LOT more happy in this tank. He used to float around the top so much that I though he was dead plenty of times. Now he swims around and plays and I bet he's very excited for his tank to ALWAYS be clean.

We were looking for a small tank that was quiet. This one is great. It looks nice and we never hear it. For the first few days I kept checking it to be sure the filter was working. Very happy with this purchase.

Lee's Triple-Flow Corner Filter, Small

Lee's Triple-Flow Corner Filter, SmallI prefer this kind of filter, over the ones you have to buy the pads for. These dont require replacing charcoal every changing and also all you need to buy is a bag of cotton floss and a box of charcoal. Sometimes they tend to float, but I put some aquarium marbles in the bottom with the charcoal...problem solved. They both last a long time and together may cost about 10.00. When purchasing the filter pads they cost way over that amount and dont last nearly as long before having to buy more. More economical if you want to save money by buying these corner filters, floss, and charcoal...total maybe 15.00 (at least thats what I paid). Compared to buying a more popular filter that uses the replacement pads. The filtering system alone would cost that much if not more and then you still have to buy the filter pads, which are expensive. Your choice...but I prefer the economical way. They do a fabulous job in keeping the tank clean too.

I had not seen one of these for many, many years... but I thought it would be useful as an emergency filter for a small tank. I actually had a 10-gallon fry tank that suddenly cycled a few weeks later, so I added this to a spare airpump with a mesh bag of "nitrate sponge" and some nylon fiber and a filter pad... It helped stabilize the tank and save the fry. If you are someone who prepares for an emergency with your smaller fish tanks, this might be a useful purchase...

I needed to replace my 25 year old corner filter when it got damaged during a move. This one is made of plastic so thin that the bottom cracked when I pushed the filter pedestal into the gravel. The "grips" that are positioned to hold the air stone tubing in place do not have a central opening large enough to accommodate the tubing. If you try to press the air tubing into the center of the riser tube the prongs will break off. As a consequence the air stone floats out of the riser and the filter is useless. The unit should be fitted with a rigid tube attached to the riser such that the air stone can be held in place.

Other than the above mentioned quality and design problems, the filter functions as advertised and should be suitable for short term use until a better option becomes available.

I have 2 of these filters for a 29 gallon and they keep the water clear. I used Seachem Denitrate as well as filter floss and I have had no problems with water quality. The plastic seems a bit flimsy, as mentioned in the other reviews, but with a little care I have managed to avoid any cracks or damage.

Eco Earth for Small Animal and Insects

Zoo Med Eco Earth Loose Coconut Fiber Substrate, 8 QuartsI use three of these bricks in a 75 gallon tank for my Ball Python. Local pet store charges $20 for this pack and Amazon sells for $8. This is the perfect medium to keep your humidity up.....guarantees full sheds too if you keep it moist.

I originally reviewed this product with 5 stars as awesome(see original review below, but I had to change my review. I picked up my box turtle the other day to move him to clean the enclosure and noticed that he had some of the fibers from this product by his rear leg, no big deal-I'll just pull it out...WRONG! Turned out to be a HUGE mass of fibers that were embedded and impacted between the inside of his rear leg and his shell, or actually the skin under his shell, actually into his shell cavity. There was so much that I had to call for help from my sister. The turtle was getting too stressed and I couldn't move fast enough holing his leg and getting it out. Double teaming it we pulled out a significant mass of fibers from this coconut fiber substrate, I would guess it was a solid 2 inch mass in the side of his body, pushing so much that his front was swollen to compensate. I won't buy this product again, I am scared for my turtle's life if I do. Instead I found mushroom compost, natural sphagnum moss, sphagnum peat moss and washed play sand. Mixed all of that together and topped it with some additional moss and hay and he is loving it and I am breathing a sigh of relief. I don't wish this experience on anyone so I caution you against using this with animals that burrow and have a shell like turtles and tortoises.

If this product was sifted and the large fibers removed from the powdery coconut then it would be safe, but with the fibers I don't believe it is safe for turtles or tortoises.

PREVIOUS REVIEW

I have tried many substrates for my box turtle, and he was just "good" with them. I saw this in the store and bought one brick to try it. Followed the instructions, using hot water and it expanded beautifully, didn't have anything to drain either. Put it in my turtle's cage and he went crazy! He loved it and started digging right away, then ran back and forth and dug himself another hole, he was so cute. He liked it so much I bought a 3 pack and added more, it stays nice and clean, he adores it and moves it around to suit his needs, it is non-toxic and antimicrobial...I won't do anything else. I also notices that he is more energetic and has a better appetite since I added this substrate. I have nothing bad to say about it. WARNING, don't try to expand more than one brick at a time unless you have a big enough container, it does expand considerably and I found out the hard way that it can crack a cheap plastic bucket...

GREAT STUFF!

I was really happy to find these bricks for such a great price on Amazon. The kids have a hermit crab, and this makes a great substrate for its habitat.

Works as described. No odor and really retains the nutrient well. Using it for hydroponics both indoor and out. Great for cloning tomatoes too. Very pleased.

This did a great job of replacing our old substrate for our hermit crabs. The bricks rehydrated easily and were very cost effective. The crabs actually have been a lot more active since they got into this substrate. A great deal at this price.
