Gulfstream Tropical AGU00400 Mag-Float Glass with Scraper, Large

Gulfstream Tropical AGU00400 Mag-Float Glass with Scraper, LargeI maintain aquariums for a living. What that means is I clean the aquariums as well as maintain all the additives and check the levels and control what fish go in their etc. I use alot of tools on reef tanks (salinity refractometers, tds meters, gravel vacs, kent rods, test kits, etc. This mag float scraper is by far the best tool I use. It gets 100% of algae off the glass (yes even coralline algae) and doesn't scratch. I know it's pricey but this is super high quality and will seriously last you forever. They sell replacement scrapers in two packs for around $10 and everything on it is repairable if damaged. A great investment. Oh and mine was handed down from the guy befrore me it's about 5 or so years old and it works awesome.

Have a large reef tank. Have tried almost every scraper that has come along and keep coming back to this one as it is the only one I have found that removes all of the different types of algae

Marineland Visi-Therm Aquarium Heater

Marineland Visi-Therm Aquarium Heater, 200-wattI was very skeptical getting this heater at first. Because first off, there were no reviews regarding this ANYWHERE. So I kinda took a shot in the dark buying this one after searching hours for a heater for my 2 gallon aquarium.

It may be more expensive than other heaters for small aquariums but so far.... I think it's worth it.

It's getting the job done. I love how it doesn't look tacky in my aquarium (I was worried it would look really bulky) but it blended in just fine. It has it's own holder (so you don't have to worry about it dangling in the aquarium like a rabid lizard) And my Betta fish loves it :) He's currently "resting" underneath it.

And I love how you can adjust the water temperature by actually seeing NUMBERS. Other heaters let you control the water temperature blindly and making you unplug it when the water gets too hot (which in my opinion, is fish murder). This heater has an automatic switch so it turns of by itself when it gets to the desired water temperature.

Safe to say, SO FAR, this is the best heater I've had. =)

TO ANYONE CONSIDERING THIS HEATER:

I have had this heater for about 5 months now. It worked great for that period of time but today I came home after being out of town overnight and the temperature in my tank was a whopping 91ยบ!!!!! As this is a saltwater aquarium, everything survived....LUCKILY!!! You may have different luck with this heater than I did but be warned that the thermostat may just decide to stop working and cook your fish while you sleep!

I had a marineland Visi therm heater in my marine aquarium and for no reason the glass on it cracked. The heater was in a water level controlled sump where it was never in contact with moving objects of fish so user error is NOT an issue here.

A large section of glass simply "fell" off and exposed all the live coils to the water. The heater smoked and stunk the entire room out.

Everything in my tank was electrocuted to death instantly and I am now out hundreds of dollars in livestock.

NEVER EVER EVER EVER buy this product.

After a year, I decided that my previous heaters the Hydor mini heaters were not adequate for my bettas due to the fact that they never got their water to the proper temperatures. They only heated their tanks just a few degrees higher than what the temperature in my apartment. After much research, I ended up buying four of the Visi-Therm Deluxe Submersible Heaters 25W for my four boys so I could be able to regulate the temperature settings. After a brief trial and error with the temperature settings, I finally got my boys' tanks at a temperature of warm and toasty or what it should be for betta splendens (i.e somewhere between 78 to 82 degrees). I had a bit of a struggle getting the suction cups to attached to the heater but evenutally I did. I like that the light will go on notifying me when the heater is on, and turns off when the temperature of the water is near being too warm. Because Ra's temperature was only at 69-70 degrees with his Hydor Mini heater, my little boy was cold. When I put in the Visi-Therm and brought back the temperature to over 75 degrees, Ra started making bubble nests again. I definitely will never go back to using a heater where I can not control the temperature. After a couple of months of owning the Visi-Therm Deluxe 25 heater, they are still working properly for me. I have read horror stories about this particular heater but from my personal experience, they have not malfunctioned.

I originally had a 50W Marineland Stealth Pro, which has worked perfectly in 6G Fluval Edge with a nice design small and dark to blend in with the plants in the back, and a clear dial and pilot light at the top and not in the tank, where it distracts. That one was recalled due to explosion and fire hazard, and unfortunately has not been reissued.

As a replacement, Marineland sent a Visi-Therm of equal power. It has a more obtrusive design making it harder to hide, and a bright pilot light very obvious at night. But it initially worked ok.

However, after a couple of months it failed open, and the tank started cooling. I caught it right away, and did not lose anything. And this is better than exploding and blowing the tank out.

Disappointing nevertheless...

My brother had the opposite experience with this heater losing his fish due to a thermal run away.

I think, I am done with Marineland.

Repitat Reptile House 5 gal Flat Back Hex Acrylic Habitat with Metal Screen Top

Repitat Reptile House 5 gal Flat Back Hex Acrylic Habitat with Metal Screen TopI bought this for my 3 pet hermit crabs and am very pleased. The only thing I wish they had included was some sort of backdrop/ foam wall/ climbing wall. But this is a very versatile, sturdy, no-nonsense terrarium. My crabs have since moved to another tank (Exo-Terra), just because of space-saving and personal preferences. But this 5 Gal is plenty big and looks nice anywhere you place it. Also easy to access (no fidgeting), and I love the extra feature of the metal add-on lamp holder (took 30 seconds to put on). I will definitely use this tank again in the future for my next reptile-type pet.

We recently purchased a hermit crab while on vacation. My son later purchased two more crabs, so we needed something bigger than the small habitat we had. This has been great. The crabs have plenty of room to move around. We do use the coconut fiber mixed with hermit crab sand. Also, we have a heating pad, that I keep underneath it to maintain the correct level of humidity for them.

This cage is extremely durable, and worth the cost (I paid $35 from Amazon). It is perfect to use with hermit crabs!

Was looking for a turtle tank, not heavy like a glass aquarium, and not the typical smallish plastic ones at the pet store. This was a Great idea, has some beauty because of the shape, and large enough for 2 little sliders, easy to clean, big enough to put a suction platform for them to get up on, and it comes with a nice metal mesh cover.

They say that there should be 5 gallons per hermit crab.

Putting this tank at a one hermit crab home. If you have two tiny little hermies, this would be a good STARTER tank.

I do not advise buying it though. I am sure the product is great, but it is not ideal for proper hermit crab care.

It is rather cruel to have one lonely hermit crab. They love friends! But do not go out and buy 5 of them if you have not had a successful molting process. I have had many different habitats in the last 3 years for my hermit crabs. I started out in a metal (DO NOT USE FOR HERMIT CRABS, THEY ARE TOXIC) cage habitat then upgraded to another easily portable plastic/metal cage (once again no metal!) then upgraded to a 10 gallon but found that after I started adding the salt water dish, fresh (DE chlorinated) water dish, food DISHES, climbing items, 1 hide out per hermit crab that my 10 gallon tank seemed smaller and smaller. I have recently upgraded to a 20 gallon tank and so far so good, but still feels like I could have more room and easily fill it with more things for my hermies. until i have a place of my own, i will stick with a 20 gallon but hope to have a much bigger crabitat one day!

If you plan on getting more hermit crabs for your little critter i highly advise a bigger tank or you will soon be spending more money on yet another tank. but this 5 gallon would not be the worst choice for your hermit crabs, but it is rather cruel. they need space!

Petco Variety Pack Plastic Aquarium Plants

Petco Variety Pack Plastic Aquarium PlantsI bought a variety pack at Petco, it's affordable and you get around 3 or 4 plastic plants depending. They are all of varying sizes and my Betta seems to like them. Although they are plastic, my Betta has not had any fins tearing or anything like that.

Note:

I've had these about a month now, and they are beginning to disintegrate and become stringy. My filter catches more of the stringy junk everyday. I'm probably going to have to replace them soon.

I don't know if this happens to all plastic plants. Just thought I'd share.

Beautiful in the tank! Has great color and looks amazing!

It is also slightly weighted which makes placement much easier.

Hydro IV Sponge Pro Filter - Up to 80 gallons

Hydro IV Sponge Pro Filter - Up to 80 gallonsHaving a somewhat overstocked goldfish tank, I run two HOB filters: the Tetra Whisper 60 and the Marineland Penguin 350, but what I really needed was more biological filtration, and something I could rely on. The Penguin is not self-priming, and so in case of power failure, it often stops working. Even the Whisper filter is somewhat unreliable when the power goes out, and will not immediately resume working after. The motors in both of these filters will eventually burn out, but my Hydro Pro sponge filters with their simple and effective design will always work.

Due to the circumstances described above, I decided to install two Hydro IV sponge filters in my goldfish tank to increase biological filtration. I needed something reliable and simple that would work, no matter what. As all fish enthusiasts know, biological filtration is the most important type of filtration in any tank, and using a sponge filter is the best way to establish a good bio-filter, especially when your tank exceeds its recommended bio-load.

I run mine in the simple way, with airstones, using a Tetra 77855 air pump. I have been running these for over a month now, and my fish and I have been quite pleased with the results. The water in my tank actually seems cleaner and clearer, and there are no expensive cartridges or parts to replace. It's no wonder most pet stores don't sell these as they are so economical. As long as you rinse them once a month, you never have to replace them, and there are no complicated parts. I rinse mine in a bucket of used water from my aquarium every month, and that's all there is to it. Even though my bio-load is too high, I must say my water quality is excellent, and I have a healthy, happy tank. Even my apple snails are happier. They like to crawl on the sponge, eating any particles of algae or food that get trapped in the outside.

One more benefit of having this type of filter is that it can help quickly cycle a new tank. I have a 40-long tank that formerly housed some mollies. I did a complete water change to prepare the tank to house two black moors, and I needed to cycle it. I squeezed water from my sponges as a source of bacteria, and I put this in my new tank, eventually trading one of my 'dirty' sponges with a new one to more quickly establish the new tank. After trading filter cartridges and bio-wheels in my Penguins and waiting a week, I found no ammonia or nitrites in my tank, and it was ready for the moors. I could have never done this without the quality bio-filtration that these filters provide. I now plan to install Hydro Pro sponge filters in every tank.

I've used sponge filters in the past to polish aquarium water and keep baby fry from being gobbled up by the normal filtration. This Hydro IV works great and the design makes it easy to clean.

Most aquarium filters now use a motor to force water through some kind of filter pad which must be replaced at intervals. However, before there were reliably sealed electric motors, most home aquariums moved water using the "airlift" principle, in which a rising column of bubbles pulled water through the filtering material. This is an elegant and just about failsafe method. Debris in the tank cannot ever jam the external air pump which feeds the filter, and if electricity is interrupted, the filter cannot lose siphon, it simply starts bubbling again when power is restored to the air pump. Many fish love to play in the rising stream of bubbles.

Hydro Sponge filters, first marketed in the 1990's, are a more recent application of the airlift. Hydro Sponge IV is intended for tanks up to 80 gallons. Made of dense, strong plastic with a weighted base which holds the sponge up away from the aquarium bottom, they dismantle easily for cleaning of the sponge. The pores within the sponge provides an enormous surface area for colonization by beneficial bacteria providing very thorough biological filtration. They can be powered by an air pump with or without an airstone (using an airstone will give finer bubbles and make less noise), or with an electric powerhead for those with larger tanks or who simply feel the need for more energetic water movement.

It is difficult to imagine such a simple device working well. Surprisingly, they are excellent, and can be used as the only filter in the tank for many applications. I've used them on tanks sized from 10 gallons up to 75 gallons, always with good results. The local fish store where I shop has an expensive trickle filter for their dozens of tanks, and every single freshwater tank also has a Hyrdo Sponge or similar sponge filter as well. Apparantly the sponge is doing something which the trickle filter doesn't?

Maintainence is as simple as the filter. When you perform your periodic aquarium water change, (20% every week) save some of the old water in a bucket. Separate the top and bottom parts of the filter and remove the sponge from the tank. Squeeze it out in the bucket. See all the stuff which the sponge removed from the water? Reinstall the sponge and refill your tank. Go have dinner with the money you saved not purchasing replacement filter cartridges.

In sum, a clever and elegantly simple device which works very well.

I use these in all my fish tanks. Very affordable, excellent filtration. The "Pro" series lasts alot longer and filters better.

Want Hydro IV Sponge Pro Filter - Up to 80 gallons Discount?

The sponge material used on these is extremely inferior. It loses its shape and tight fit around the lift tube fairly rapidly from cleanings. The pore size isn't really ideal for most common applications, it should be larger for better flow and less clogging. Most don't need a fry safe size, if you do it's something you use only as long as needed since a larger pore is more effective. The pedestal base is also a poor designsponge filters are generally better set directly on the bottom, or even partly buried into the substrate. For the size, there really isn't that much sponge for bio-filtration, an awful lot of it is the unnecessarily bulky plastic pedestal. The extra wide lift tube really isn't an asset, sponge filters are much more effective with only a low to moderate flow ratea faster rate is counterproductive.

EDIT:I do see from the description the "pro" line now claims to use a reticulated spongewhether or not this is actually different or better than the ones I have owned I'm not certain, but it may address some of the earlier problems. I still feel it is a 1 star product due to the other issues, as well as the exorbitant pricemuch better filters can be purchased at half or less.

Hydor USA H2Show Coliseum Kit, Red LED with Bubbles

Hydor USA H2Show Coliseum Kit, Red LED with BubblesI bought this for my dad for his birthday for his tank, and he really does love it. It looks really cool especially at night, the whole thing lights up with a vibrant red. But in the picture it seems like it would be way bigger than what it actually is, just take that into consideration. then again he has a 49 gallon tank so pretty big, it would easily be the center of attention in a 15 gallon or so. I also bought the volcano of the same brand, again awesome to watch but too small!

Deep Blue Silicone Aquarium Air Tubing 25 feet

Deep Blue Silicone Aquarium Air Tubing 25 feetI actually purchased this tubing for my precordial stethoscope. I love the color and flexibility at a fraction of the cost of comparable medical grade tubing.

Only have tried one "other brand" of this type air line but this one is softer and a slight bit thicker walled tubing.

Pro's...

As the advertising says this type stays soft after months(have not used it for years) of use.

It is more flexible so goes around corners better than the clear kind.

Con's

It is more obvious in the tank.

I would recommend this product to a friend or relative.
