i absolutely love this. I was a little darker than the picture which i was hoping for and it fits great in my 55 gallon aquarium. Would recommend to anyone!!The colors aren't near as bright as I thought they would be, kinda disappointing! You Get what you pay for..I did not know at the time I bought it that it is a corner piece the back is flat and it is shaped for a corner. I love it though it is bright and whimsical!Coralife Colormax T-5 Fluorescent Aquarium Lamp
The bad thing is that this bulb burnt out in 6 months averaging just 4 hours of use a day (African Cichlids, no plants in a 90 gallon). From my experiences I usually get at least 3 to 4 times that much life.
I'm going to continue looking at the LED's since they use
Laguna PowerFlo External Biological Pond Filter, 1000-Gallon, 20-Inch
As far as the actual performance of this bio filter...I have to say I'm unimpressed. The cost of it is low compared to others that I considered which is why I gave it a 2 instead of a 1.
What I like?
The price
Easy enough to clean. Bottom plug removes in order to drain. Lift-out compartments can be quickly hosed off.
Some other bio filters are set up for easy flushing and cleaning, but cost considerably more.
What I don't like?
It's sort of flimsy (we laid some flat concrete pads behind the landscaping in order to level filter box and give it some stability)
I don't like the filtering media provided (it keeps disappearing through the output hoses). Will replace with better option.
Lid doesn't fit snugly enough.
If you aren't careful in making sure that the two output flows are removing water from the filter at a rate equal to (or greater than) water coming in, the excess water will just spill out from under lid...and drain your pond.
The already mentioned problem with finding output hosing to fit. I ended up having to spend $40 for 4.5' of output hosing.
I feel that the engineering of the filter input/output and compartments is not optimal. If I don't clean it out at least once a week, too much dead algae and other gunk settles in the bottom. I generally only clean out our other biological filter (BioFalls) no more than 2-3 times a year. In order to keep the good bacteria operating at peak, the media needs water/oxygen circulating over it constantly. If water circulates too fast, the bacteria doesn't have enough time to do its stuff. But in the case of this bio filter, it appears to me that there is too much lower area in the box where the water doesn't circulate or move the water. As a result, the dead algae (from the UV sterilizer) and other small debris just settles in the bottom and slowly decays.I am very pleased with this product. My 1,000 gallon pond was a murky green before i installed this filter. in less than two days it is crystal clear. I hooked it up to a laguna clear flo 900 gph pond pump. I think that was important as this particular pump was capable of handling larger particles. The only reason I did not give it five stars is that the water outflow nozzle is larger than a 1.25 inch and smaller than a 1.5 inch. I had to buy and fit a specialty hose so I could run an outflow line and not use the unit as a waterfall. I have a separate pump and hose for the waterfall. Also, it comes with the filter pad and the lava rock, but it would not have taken much to also include the plastic biological media which goes in the third stage. I had to buy that separately also. overall, the filter works very well, I would definitely recommend.

We have used this model of pond filter for several years and had to replace it recently due to minor part breakage. The price is reasonable and the function is fine. I have had this for a few months now. I must say, it does work with a little help with beneficial bacteria. I have this running on the Laguna 600 pump, it's feeding into the external filter. The bacteria can grow on its own, or you can buy products to start the biological process. I would not use this with anything larger than 1000 gallons. It is a bit smaller, with a little added bio-media added such as ceramic rings, a few lava rocks, plastic scrub pads, and a few small air conditioner filter pads (not included) this things works great to grow bacteria. Only mods I would suggest, adding a air pump with air stones in the media, so the bacteria will grow. I have done this by drilling a hole and adding a air pump to media. Also the parts made are a little cheaply made but do the job.Want Laguna PowerFlo External Biological Pond Filter, 1000-Gallon, 20-Inch Discount?
Nutrafin Cycle Biological Filter Supplement
Day 1 you'll (shake the dickens out of it) dump in a ton of the stuff as directed, by day 2 I've seen the ammonia spike that signifies the beginning of cycling. Day 3 it says you're done... and you have cycled the aquarium... ammonia and nitrite drop to zero and nitrate is at a safe level (under 5 ppm) by day 4 in my experience, but when you add fish, don't be surprised if you see a 'mini-cycle' where the ammonia and nitrite spike a bit. The tank and fish are fine but consult a forum or fish store if you're worried. One review on here stated they tried replacing all of their water to fix an algae problem?... not what this product is for. This runs through the 1-4 week process of initially cycling the tank within 3 days, doesn't make it impossible to make mistakes.
I will say I have some reservations about the "immediate stocking" part... I would suggest setting the aquarium up, pop an aquatic plant in there and maybe a pinch of fish flake (for some organic matter to break down) and use Cycle for the 3 days, THEN introduce fish SLOWLY, just a couple at a time if they're small, for bigger fish like cichlids, only one at a time... unless you have a very well established tank, dunking a bunch of fish will spike ammonia to really dangerous levels and might kill all of your fish. This being said, I have thrown 3, 2" fish into a 10 gallon tank of treated water, added Cycle, and it did work... it just isn't exactly humane, as the cycling can be hard on the fish's gills, slime coat, etc. This was about 2 months ago and all of those fish are still fine.
API Stress Zyme8 OZ. is another version of this product, but does it over the course of 2 weeks. I've used it as well and it seems to do the job well also, so if 3 days sounds too good to be true (though somehow it is true), you may want to give it a try (I've used Cycle and Stress Zyme together in factdidn't change anything, Cycle did a 3 day cycle and Stress Zyme caused it to cycle again so I wouldn't recommend mixing them.
Essentially, despite what so many fish fans say, this stuff does work... but only if you shake the heck out of the bottle (it stirs up the bacteria). I have used it, currently use it, and will continue to use it both for setting up new tanks and keeping the beneficial bacteria level up in my established tanks (I have 4, 3 fresh, 1 salt). Follow the directions and remember to SHAKE, SHAKE, SHAKE that bottle!I had tried a competing product, by Tetra, and did not have good results. Ammonia stayed high, algae bloomed, fish died. Went to my local fish store and the kind lady suggested this. So glad she did. Within days I had ammonia dropping, nitrite rising, then dropping and nitrate rising. My tank was cycled in three days. I was able to add more fish a couple days later and didn't have a spike of ammonia.
I remember the old days of having to wait a month, or more, for a new tank to cycle. This is so much better, and more humane for the fish, too. I recommend this Nutrafin Cycle!

This should be one of the first products you buy when setting up an aquarium. This has the good bacteria you need to help speed along your cycle process. You could do it the long way but try this you won't regret it.Read Best Reviews of Nutrafin Cycle Biological Filter Supplement Here
I'm very new to keeping aquatic pets, but after over a month after starting, my fish, shrimp, snail and plants are healthy and the tank is stableI got a 5 gallon acrylic tank kit with some substrate and a rock and started dosing with Cycle from day 1. After a day or two, I bought some marimo moss and a couple of red shrimp from a local shop and added them into my new tank. Within a week, after doing partial water changes every other day, it seemed like my tank finished cycling with trace amounts of ammonia, no detectable nitrites and a build up of nitrates.
Now it seems that without any cycling product, it typically takes about a month to fully cycle a new aquarium. It took me a week with Cycle and no algae bloom!
I do add a little bit of Cycle in after doing water changes, but only because I have so much left (I think I bought the 16 oz bottle) and its shelf life is relatively short due to live bacteria inside. I don't think it's necessary, but I did recently buy a new filter and it certainly didn't hurt.
Definitely worth checking out.

It makes me feel good that there's something I can do to help keep my fish healthy. I add this during every water change and each time a new fish is added (which rarely happens, but happens). I had a moment when all my fish were suffering from something unknown and were going through shock. It was the scariest thing I thought I would lose my whole tank. I added this every day for 3 days and miraculously only 1 fish died. The rest of my crew are going strong several weeks after that event. I don't have any proof but I'm sure this helped keep them from dying.Highly recommended!

So, I bought this because this was the cheapest one I found. I had a single betta to test it out, and everything went fine. Until the next morning he was over in the last compartment. He jumped over the two dividers, I was so mad because what if I had another male betta in the other compartments, my betta would have been dead. Then I decided that I would my betta out of the security house and put another one in his place. Somehow he lifted the bottom up and got out. So I had two male betta's in one tank, so scary. I finally got him out with no fighting. I am returning this product and getting a refund. THIS PRODUCT SHOULD NOT BE USED AS A PERMANENT HOME FOR ANY FISH! However, for temporary separation from tankmates without the stress of being removed from the community tank, this product fits the bill!I have been looking for a way to photograph my male guppies without removing them from their tank (thus stressing them and causing their colors to fade) and this is PERFECT for that use! I do recommend removing the "barriers" though, as they are useless and there isn't enough room in each compartment for any fish to be comfortable.
I also used this as a drop tank for my females (with all of the barriers removed, of course!) and it allows the fry to escape from their hungry mothers without confining the female in one of those miserable little "Breeder Nets" that seem to stress the fish. The water flow into the box is great and the slots on the bottom are large enough that food particles, waste and baby fish all fall through easily.

this system covers all the basics. My original order came with a leaking regulator but fluval replaced it at no extra charge. The co tanks are small and expesive to replace so although this system works great you'll be investing in alot of co tanks.. and the only company that makes replacement co2 tanks for this system is fluval. you can't buy generic tanks, they wont fit into the regulators threads. The only other thing was it was a bit difficult to set the rate, but I liked it just the same

Aquatop PF25-UV Hang-On Filter with UV Sterilization
I only had this filter running in my 28-gallon tall hex tank for just over a month & have been very pleased with it so far. My acrylic tall, aquarium only has a 7" opening for back-hanging filters, so at 6.5" wide this filter was a prefect fit. Note that it is very important that the lip of your aquarium must be 3/4" OR LESS. Any lip thicker than 3/4" & this filter WILL NOT fit. Fortunately the lip of my tank is exactly 5/8". My tank is for Marine fish as I have damsels, cleaner shrimp, live corals & some other live invertebrates.
The filter also comes with a small bag of ceramic rings (usefull for biological purposes) in addition to the standard disposable cartridge with activated carbon. The filter does have a surface skimmmer that does skim the surface of the water, but unlike traditional protein skimmers there is no collection cup to clean. The flow rate is adjustable by a simple turn of the knob on the top part of the filter near the intake tubes. The unit pump is very quiet. My aquarium is in my living room, so I could hardly hear it when I'm watching television. The only noise I hear is the water from the filter going back to the tank.
The UV sterilizer works on a separate switch and can operate independently from the filter's main pump. I run my filter 24-7, but I turn my UV sterilizer off or on occasionally. When it is on you see just a a slight glow on the bottom of the filter which helps me to remind me that it is on. To replace the bulb, you just unscrew the bottom assembly that houses the bulb.
Overall, I like the quality & value of this filter so far, but time will tell to see how it holds up. If you buy this filter & install it please insure that all of the plastic parts are not cracked and that they all snap together firmly. I made a slight mistake on the intake tube near the top part of the filter in which two pieces were not firmly snapped togther & I had some water run down the side of my tank! Yikes, but it was easily fixed. Overall, you can't beat the price/value for an outside filter, surface skimmer & UV sterilzer all in one unit. Recommended!UPDATE 7/19/13 It's been about 13 months since I purchased my AquaTop PF25UV hob/uv sterilizer filter and it continues to work quite well. In fact, so well, that I have purchased a PF40UV and a pair of PF15UV filters for some of my other planted aquaria.
These are fairly durable filters and their uv sterilizers are very effective at keeping the water in my planted aquaria nice and clean.
While they are quite good for use as uv clarifiers, if you run them at a very low gallon per hour rate say 20 gph, these filters will also offer germicidal benefits.
In this author's experience after more than a year of use, I find that the AquaTop HOB/UV sterilizer filters are not only affordable, but also, well made, durable, and very useful for keeping the water columns in my planted aquaria crystal clear.
Highly recommended!
Earlier:
If you own a planted aquarium that has a basic lighting system, and you use a minimum amount of fertilizer, your filter is probably good enough to keep your water clear.
However, if you use a hi-tech lighting system such as T-5, or metal halide, injected CO2, and planted and liquid fertilizers, then you are going to have a nearly impossible time keeping your water clean.
The problem with these hi-tech systems is that they generate so many nutrients in the water table of an aquarium, that bacteria and algae not only thrive in such situation, they can actually grow exponentionally when exposed to them.
This will leave you with either very cloudy water from all of the new bacteria as they replicate, or green water from algae as it replicates. One of the other tends to dominate an aquarium with a hi-tech lighting system.
For example, when using a GLO T5 lighting system, pressurized CO2, and liquid and planted fertilizer. this author has had many algae blooms in my aquariums.
The only way that I could clear the water was with the use of a Vortex D1 diatom filter.
And even then, within a day the water turned green again.
So I decided to purchase an AquaTop IL-10UV inline ultraviolet sterilizer to see if it could get rid of the algae blooms.
The IL-10UV ($40) worked so well for one of my planted tanks, that I decided to purchase an AquaTop PF-UV25 for my Aqueon 20 long planted aquarium. I have only owned the PF-UV25 for about two weeks, however, it managed to clean the green water in this aquarium within a matter of 24 hours.
I also like the fact that the PF-UV25 has a separate mains plug for the uv sterilizer bulb, since this allows me to extend the life of this bulb by using it less frequently.
The PF-UV25's power supply is a well made unit with some heft to it, that includes an on-off switch. And this makes it very convenient to use.
The unit's intake tube also includes both a surface skimmer as well as a check valve. I like the inclusion of the check valve, since hob filters tend to drain their water back into the aquarium during a power outage, which might damage a hot uv bulb. I say this since the water is used to keep the bulb cool. So even if the bulb is turned off, it may still be hot enough to crack if the water surrounding its housing is rapidly drained from the PF-UV25's filter housing during a blackout.
Even though the PF-UV25 offers just mechanical and chemical filtration, it is a must for a planted aquarium where hi-tech lighting and injected CO2 are used.
Moreover, if the PF-UV25 stands up as well as my Aquaclear hob filters, this line of filters will be copied by many other manufacturers of hob and canister filters, since they do a superior job of filtering an aquarium.
Some critics of inexpensive uv sterilizers have claimed that the poor quality of the uv bulbs included with these units cannot kill off bacteria.
However, I have seen the PF-UV25 clear an aquarium so full of bacteria that the water was very cloudy, overnight. So these uv sterilizers do work in spite of being inexpensive.
They also clear up green water and prevent it from coming back as long as they are used several times a week ( or kept on 24/7).
I use canister filters for biological filtration. In my 20 gallon long heavily planted aquarium, I use an Eheim 2213 for biological and mechanical filtration, and the AquaTop PF-UV25 for mechanical filtration and uv sterilization. The combination works quite well, and my fish have never looked healthier, or more energetic than they have since I added uv sterilization to my aquariums.
Hats off to AquaTop for making affordable uv systems for aquaria that have made keeping planted aquariums with hi-tech lighting systems very easy to maintain!
And I enthusiastically recommend the AquaTop PF-UV25, given its ability to kill algae and bacteria, while keeping my aquarium's water crystal clear all at an affordable price.

Aqua- Tech #1 EZ-Change Cartridge 3 pack replacement filter cartridges for AQUA-Tech 5-15 POWER FIL
My 10 gallon has a Marineland filter. I found a box of Aqua Tech filters at my local pet shop on sale for $2 and noticed that they look exactly the same as my Penguin Rite Size A filters. They work perfectly. So I figured I would look up the Aqua-Tech brand on Amazon since they usually have better prices than the stores. Turns out, the Aqua Tech brand seems to be more expensive than Marineland. As of this post, Marineland's Mini Penguin cartridges are sold on Amazon in a box of 6 filters for about $10 and qualifies for Super Saver Shipping. Which compared to $12 plus shipping for 3 cartridges is a pretty good deal.
I like to save money where I can and hopefully this bit of info helps someone else save money too. These work wonderful in our little 5 gallon tank. We have 2 fish named Sushi and Freckles. They are pretty dirty boys so this this actually keeps up with them. This Aqua-Tech filter cartridge fits my Aqua-Tech 5-15 Gallon Aquarium Power Filter. We just rinse it in water before putting it in the filter. It needs to be replaced every two to four weeks per the instructions.
We have goldfish, which always seem to dirty water more quickly than some other fish. So far, so good. Our little five gallon tank is clear and doesn't stink.I like these filters a little better than the tetra filters, and these cartridges are much easier to maintain (and less messy).Received when stated, and have used 2 of the 3 filters. Works exactly as expected and fish are doing fine.
