API Ammonia Test Kit

API Ammonia Test KitFor people using Prime in their tanks: Prime acts as a binder for ammonia to make it safe. There are two types of ammonia in fish tanks. NH3 and NH4. One is free ammonia, and the other is ionized ammonia. Free ammonia is very dangerous to fish, the other is not as dangerous. The API Ammonia Test Kit only checks for the presence of ammonia, it can't tell you which it's detecting giving you a positive result when the only ammonia may be ionized ammonia. I'm sure that kit works well, but for those of us using prime, you want to use the Seachem MultiTest: Free & Total Ammonia test kit.Seachem MultiTest Ammonia Test Kit

Product is accurate and a good tool for determining if there is an overfeeding or overcrowding problem in an aquarium. Also indicates whether or not enough maintenance(ie. water changes)is being done on your tank.

This was a replacement for my master test kit, but I love every API product I've used. This kit is way more accurate and cheaper overall than those paper test.

With this kit, you can check your ammonia levels easily using a couple of drops from two bottles and the included test tube. Checking ammonia is very important during the cycling process as you can gauge when water changes are needed. I've been using this while my tank has been cycling and have yet to lose a fish because I always know when a water change is required.

The API Ammonia Test Kit is easy to use & accurate. It is a liquid test for ponds, freshwater and saltwater aquariums.

"Tropical fish release ammonia into the water through their gills, urine & solid waste. Uneaten food & decaying organic matter also adds ammonia to the water. Even small amounts of ammonia will stress fish; large amounts will kill fish. Water should be tested for ammonia every other day when your aquarium is first set up, and once a week after the biological filter has been established (approx. 4-6 weeks)."

This kit will test ammonia levels from 0 to 8 ppm. It contains 2 bottles of solution (Test solution #1 & Test solution #2) both are used to perform the ammonia test, 2 plastic color charts (one for freshwater & ponds, the other for saltwater), clear instructions and a flat-bottomed, glass test tube with lid. Directions for using the kit are detailed in Amazon's "Important Information" section.

I paid $9.99 for this kit at a local pet store. The kit I purchased has an expiration date of 3/2017 which isn't marked on the outside of the package, but is marked on the solution bottles.
