Seachem Purigen 100ml

Seachem Purigen 100mlI wanted others to know in no uncertain terms that this amount of Purigen (100 ml), as stated above, comes in its own bag, a fact not made crystal clear in the Amazon description.

The other amount of Purigen 250 ml is just loose and requires the purchase of a bag.

Also from the description, I got the impression that Purigen would consist of larger spheres, but the product actually is countless tiny pieces of fine, almost powdery bits that must be contained in a bag with very small mesh (only an issue if you get the larger amount of 250 ml).

The product itself blows away the various carbon and resin products, which are the other alternatives. Like carbon, a tank with tannins clears right up with use of Purigen. It is certainly less messy to load in comparison with the grainy dust of charcoal smearing on countertops and sinks. In comparison to carbon, you also know when it is used up as it turns dark brown to black! Plus, it reduces the time required for filter maintenance, as you just glance at it in the filter to see the color rather than HAVING to change it every month or so as is the case with carbon and resin products that stop working at an indeterminate time.

I have not yet cleaned the stuff with bleach and then soaked it in Prime, and I don't plan on doing it. I think that--rather than risk fish and amphibian lives with bleach in case it doesn't work--I will simply repurchase more Purigen! In my mind, the price is not so prohibitive that I am willing to take the risk.

I've been keeping aquariums, from planted to reef, for over 15 years but it wasn't until recently that I finally tried this product. I say this with all seriousness: every single aquarium that I keep from this day forward will use this product. Within 24 hours of putting this product into your filter you will see a major improvement in the clarity of your tank. This improvement is exemplified if you have something tanning the water like driftwood (which was my case). My tank went from healthy and slightly colored to healthy and crystal clear in 1 day, and it stays that way. The only downside I can think of is that it did "expire" relatively quickly (about a month) and I am on my first recharge. Recharging requires a 24 hour soak in bleach and an 8 hour soak in dechlorinator, so while it's an easy task, it's not quick.

One thing that was not clear to me based on the product description, and other reviews, is that this package comes in a fine mesh bag so you don't need to buy your own. It's really nice! Just open the box, rinse it out, and stick it somewhere that water will flow over it (in my case, I put it inside my Ehiem canister filter).

The driftwood that I added to my 90 gallon aquarium changed the water color to "green tea" tint and that was after soaking the driftwood for 2 weeks prior to introducing it to my tank. I read several online aquarium forums and almost everyone stated that purigen would resolve the problem. So, I went on Amazon.com and purchase some "PURIGEN" for my Fluval FX5 canister (which is an awesome canister filter by the way) and after installing the 100ml purigen filter media bag, my tank was CRYSTAL CLEAR in less than 24 hours. This product is fantastic! I definitely recommend this product. 5 Stars!

I found the most difficult information to retrieve was if this product works as well when you have a planted tank. I tested myself and I can say that after two weeks my plants still growing without any sign of nutrient deficiency.

I really waned to give this product 5 stars. However, I've been told that it does not much more compared to a carbon filter (which I never used so I personally cannot compared). I really like it tho, and I really suggest it to buy if you don't like to mess with carbon filter and replace it every 2-3 weeks.

As the product say it absorbs all the organic compound in the water. I have some piece of drift wood in my tank, and the water was starting to get pretty cloudy. I insert the media in the filter and after 12 hours I could see the magical difference. The water got incredibly clear. After a week the nitrogen level went down to zero (I had NO3 at about 15ppm).

The down side is that my starting water was pretty cloudy (my fault), and the product absorbed a lot of it. After two weeks the bag looks pretty brown. I think I will have to do the cleaning process pretty soon. I will wait until the bag turn completely brown, or the water start to look cloudy again. The company claim that which 100ml you can use it for up to 100 gallons for about 4 to 6 months. I think is a little bit over estimating the range.

I read several review that do not trust the cleaning process using bleach, and then soak it with de-chlorinator, I will update my review once I do a cleaning cycle.

Other than that I recommended this product to two of my friend that have nitrogen or cloudy water. And If it was the case I would definitely buy it again.

Update 4-8-13: I have the filter in place for almost 2 month, and it still keep the water clear. My tank is currently overstock, and I have no issues at all with water quality. I did not have to replace any filter cartridge. And I have not done the regeneration process.

Great product.

Update 4-24-13: I was starting to get the water little bit cloudy, so I decided to do the famous regeneration process. As soon as I dip it into the bleach/water solution it turned incredibly white. I let it soak for 24 hours, then took it out and soak in the Prime/water solution for 8 hours. After I took it out it didn't smell like chlorine at all. I wasn't sure so I dip it into some water for a bit, and test the water. Zero chlorine at the end. I place it back in the filter.

There are few companies out there that make really good products for aquarium. Seachem is one of the best and one that you can always trust. You get your money worth on any of their products.

Purigen combined with Matrix is unbeatable.

The Purigen is contained in a mesh bag and ready to use after a rinse. No need to hunt high and low for a mesh bag that can hold the tiny beads as well as withstand soaking in bleach for 24 hours during the recharge process.

I would recommend Purigen combined with Matrix for heavily stocked goldfish tanks.
