Finnex Ray2 Aquarium LED Daylight

Finnex Ray2 Aquarium LED Daylight, 48-InchBought this light for my son's deep 25 gallon tank after looking at inferior and overpriced units available at my local chain pet stores & online. It was a replacement for the dim florescent tube light that came with the tank. What a difference!!! The tank is so bright it actually looks like natural sunlight (it will actually cause you to see spots for a few minutes if you look at it straight on when lit). We have been using the light daily for about 3 months now and it is still working flawlessly. The light is bright enough to support the growth of a few Amazon swords, onion plants, and a couple of unnamed tubers. The light fixture is small, solid, and sleek looking-it is a definite improvement over the old black plastic box that was there before. I purposely waited some time to see if this light would hold-up before writing a product review to be sure I was not recommending another disappointing aquarium light system. After a few months of daily, sustained use I am pleased to report it has there are no still no problems with the light. All the LEDs are still functioning and there has been no issues with the light's performance whatsoever thus far. The only word of caution I would offer is that be very careful with the light duration. We started the light on a 12 hour daily cycle from the start and there was significant green algae growth problems on all surfaces of the tank, gravel, plants, and lid. We finally got the algae under control and are currently running it for 7-8 hour daily cycles without algae growth. If you are looking to add some punch to your tank without spending some major cash upgrade your lighting with this light.

I chose this to replace my large and unsightly fluorescent fixture (dual T5HO) based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews I had read on the internet and my own experience with the Fugeray on another tank. The Ray2 doesn't disappoint! Super slim, super bright, and has the look and feel of a much more expensive unit. Finnex knows how to get it right. Plus, they provide PAR data for their lights so the buyer can make sure the light will be appropriate for each particular aquarium setup. I am now using this on a 10 gallon that is 20" wide, so there is some goofy looking protrusion from each side, but the adjustable legs make it work.

Recommended for anyone looking for high light in a slim platform. Do your research to make sure high light intensity will work in your tank, and if so, you will be pleased with the Ray2.

There aren't many aquarium lights that are this inexpensive, that actually work as well as this one does. I love the thin, low profile look of it, and the light output of the 7k/7k daylight model is great for my planted tank. In the 2 weeks I've had the light, my plants have responded by growing taller, and bushier, than they ever were before. My fish also look much more vibrant, and colorful than they ever did with my previous light.

My ONLY gripe about it, is that the power cord is too short. I had to use an extension cord with it in order to plug it in. The cord needs to be about twice as long. I'm still giving it 5 stars though, because the price to performance value is incredible!

This review is for the 48" Ray2 Daylight. I have only had it in use for less than 24 hours, but will give my initial impressions.

This product is made in China and is noticeable from the packaging (plain brown box) to the vague instruction sheet and very limited warranty.

The light itself is very compact and seems to have an average build. The supplied legs do not fit on a 1" tank frame, this was not an issue in my situation, since due to the light intensity I immediately knew that I had to raise it from the tank, I have a canopy and with this fixture being very lightweight, 3 zip ties easily mounted it about 4 inches from the water surface.

I purchased this light while planning to set up a standard 90 gallon tank, I truly expected to have to add supplemental lighting to reach the low light range for some of the plants I was planning on keeping, to my surprise this light far exceeded what I had expected, it is definately beyond the low light range even with a 24" depth, to the point where I will need to either diffuse the light or add co2 and ferts to keep the algae at bay. I do have a good bit of experience with planted tanks, HO lighting and injected c02, but unfortunately I just dont have much knowledge of par ratings which would help myself or others interested in this light to determine where this will put their tank. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase and am fully confident that I will be able to grow more than the orginal plants I had expected to grow.

I will do an update in a month or so after after I see how plants respond and if there are any algae issues. Hope this helps!

Update:

After about 2 months of use, I love this light. My original impression was it may have been too much light but so far I have no algae issues and am not dosing any ferts. All plants are responding well, current plants are anubius, java fern, crypts, val, wysteria, red ludwigia and tiger lotus. I did have a brief power outage about a week after set up and when the power came back on only half the strip was lit, I feared what some other reviewers had mentioned, but after turning the power switch off and back on all lights were on. Another plus, I have almost no increase to my electric bill!

I absolutely love this light! Would have preferred to get the double bright version, but this works well enough.

Gives me moderate/high light in my 28 gallon bowfront, haven't noticed any of my plants pearling yet, but I have noticed an immense growth rate change since changing over to this from a single tube aqueon t8.

Attaches to the rim of the tank nicely though the screws seem somewhat of a cheap quality, it holds steady and is high enough off the tank to avoid splashing from the filter and fish occasionally jumping.

It has come highly recommended to me from many people on fish forums, and now I'm highly recommending it to everyone else!
