Eleocharis acicularis "Dwarf Hairgrass" Live Aquarium Plant

Eleocharis acicularis 'Dwarf Hairgrass Pot' Live Aquarium PlantI bought some dwarf hairgrass. This was the first time I bought an aquarium plant online and was concerned about whether it would be mostly dead when it arrived. However, my fears quickly vanished when I opened the package. They sent much more than expected, it was full and healthy, and it looks great in my tank. When I contacted them with a question about storing it until I could get it into my tank, they responded within minutes. I was so pleased with the plants and their customer service that I bought more plants within minutes of receiving the hairgrass. I will without question continue to buy more from them in the future.

I received this plant along with a few others yesterday. All the plants were in great condition. The only thing you need to be prepared for is to clean your tank ALOT when you first put this particular plant in. There are many, what I assume to be seeds, that float off of it along with some dead pieces of grass. Still a great plant, but be prepared to clean a lot of debris out of the tank.

*update*

After having this plant in my aquarium for a couple of days, snails started appearing and quickly took over! BEWARE of this plant because it will contain snails and you will have to remove them otherwise they will take over your aquarium!

I placed my order on a friday, and recieved the plant on monday. Shipping was fast, and i was also weary about the health of the plant. The plant was healthy, and looked great. There was hardly any discoloration. I even got an extra amount of the plant, due to the fact that the main package was not as full as the company would of liked it to be. Again the health of the plant was great, and shipping was fast. I was a little disappointed in the actual amount I received. I had expected more, and based the quantity i was to recieve on others comments. So maybe thats my mistake. Actual amount i recieved was probably the length and width of a dvd case.

Huge huge huge mat of this stuff! I have a 29gal and a 10 and still cant find enough places to put this stuff! It is super healthy, looks great and my danios and harlequins love breeding in it! It comes in a cocofiber mat, that is a little hard to get the roots out of if you want to totally replant it, but you can also just put the mat in and bury it. The grass is SUPER thick and adds a great meadowey look to my aquariums. Would totally buy it again :)

Aquatop CF500UV 5-Stage Canister Filter with UV 9W, 525 gph

Aquatop CF500UV 5-Stage Canister Filter with UV 9W, 525 gphHaving been keeping fish for 40 years, I grow more passionate about the hobby as time marches on. I also have become much more critical of the overwhelming sub par equipment that continues to flood the market.

A long time eheim fan, I've used their filters almost exclusively for thirty plus years and will always consider them the finest made aquarium filters in the world. That said, it was with some trepidation I ordered the Aquatop 500. I had read good reviews on the fish forums and decided to give this unit a shot.

Aquatops are made by SunSun one of the largest filter manufactures in the world. Aside from minor cosmetic differences this is the exact same filter as Reaction, Grech, SunSun, The Marineland C series and others. Although Aquatop is relatively new to the US SunSun has been making filtration systems since 1985 and I would encourage anyone to visit their web site.

Regarding the Aquatop 500 I was impressed from the get go. This is one powerful filter that provides more bang for your buck than most others in this price range. Quality touches include 3/4 inch clear green non kink hose. Secure lock down brackets for the power head, a very good quick stop for leak free disconnects when you want to add media or clean the filter, a 9 Watt Quartz tube encased integrated UV which you can turn on and off from the filter head.

9 watts of UV is is pretty close to being useless above 40 gallons. Quartz covers for UV bulbs aren't cheap the average price for a Quartz replacement tube on a 9 watt UV bulb is around $50-60. Because UV bulbs are expensive as well and usually need to be replaced every 6 months or so. The option to turn your UV on and off right from the filter head will extend the life of the bulb and never use UV on a tank that isn't fully cycled.

The filter holds a massive amount of media the five baskets are large and deep, with expandable handles so adding the media of your choice is easy as pie.

QUICK SPECS:

4+1 Stage filtration system

Capable of Mechanical, Biological, and Chemical Filtration

White enclosure

525 gals/hr (Non Certified w/media expect a loss of 30-50%)

Suitable for tanks up to 175 gal. ( This the the claim I wouldn't use this as a stand alone filter for over a 55 Gallon)

AC 110V

55 Watts

9 Watt UV Sterilizer

5ft 2in power cord with ground

Works for both fresh and saltwater tanks

18 pounds

Dimensions: 12" x 11" x 18"

Vinyl Hose Inner Diameter (ID): 3/4"

Self Priming

** Self priming filters are rarely effortless. This one is no exception and a real bear to Prime. The trick to priming these filters is not to pump the priming mechanism as the manual suggests but rather hold it down for three five minutes, release and let gravity do it's thing**

The output is strong at first. But I found the combination of water bypass and a subpar motor to slow the efficency down significantly in a very short time. I have been running a few of these and they all ended up back flushing junk into the tank. The key to avoiding this is frequent cleaning but that becomes a hasssle.

I'm often skeptical of Flow Rates unless they're certified it's all marketing jargon Consider the AquaClear 110 HOB filter it's been touting a 500 GPH since I was a kid from that tiny little motor that fits in the palm of your hand.

An eheim 1200XL with it's massive motor head is certified at 450 GPH. This is because there's no regulation hence, comapnies are free to make any claim they like. What really counts here is the "Power" of the motor that drives the pump, you can put the engine from a VW Bug into the body of a Porche but you can't expect the same perfomance.

In a very real way that's the problem with these filters, they're powerful at first but weaken very fast. Add a flimsy plastic impeller and impeller assembly as opposed to ceramic and that once strong out put becomes a weak stream. But then if Aquatop had SunSun spec in these ugrades you wouldn't be at this price point not by a long shot.

As for noise the filter is virtually silent , no hum no buzzing.

Please note the filter does not come with media. It does however, come with 5 coarse pre cut foam inserts and two ultra fine foam inserts. The ability to add five layers of filtering meadia makes this unit ideal for keeping Messy fish like Fancy Ornamental Goldfish, Oscars, Large Cichlids like Texas Reds, Midas and Flowerhorns or Arrowana and so on.

This a very decent filter for the price. Is it comparable in build quality and performanc to a Fluval FX5 or an eheim? of course not. But if you need a filter at this price point you'll be hard pressed to find a better value.

If you can stretch your budget you'll make out better in the long run with other brands but each case is different and the filter will suite your needs. Most filters offer at least 3 year warrantee you get 180 days with Aquatop. An odd number to use and weak very short term protection. I have found through personal experiance that customer support is nill to none and restricted to email only. A major drawback when problems pop up.

If you're on the fence about buying one my recommendation would be to go ahead and give it a try just understand that these filters come with some limitations that may be are hard for some to get around.

After reading product reviews from several different brands of canister filters, I was skeptical to try any of them. I decided on this Aquatop CF500UV canister filter. I have a 55 gallon tank with 1 goldfish 10 inches long, 5 goldfish ranging between 4-6 inches long, 2 bala sharks 4 inches long, 3 neon tetras, 1 pleco 13 inches long and 1 pleco 5 inches long......my tank is overstocked to say the least! Having the majority being big goldfish, you can imagine what my water quality was like.

I was running a 60 gal power filter w/standard filtration media, a 30 gal power filter with just ammonia reducing chips, a current maker, an air strip, and a heater. I've done water changes after water changes, and when that didnt control my water issues, I spent about $200.00 in additives which was only a bandaid on the fact that I have too many dirty fish crowded in the tank, nothing could keep up. My water tests came back consistently ridiculous, and its a wonder how the fish have even survived thus far.

I ordered this canister filter on Thursday afternoon and it was at my gate on Friday morning (didnt pay any expedited shipping). It even got here sooner than the other items I ordered through Amazon Prime at the same time, and you know how crazy fast those things arrive. I set it aside and planned to dive into it the following week to give myself time to research exactly how to do it since I knew I wouldnt be getting any help from the guys on this one.

Went to feed my fish Monday morning only to find the main filter had burned out sometime overnight and the water was even yuckier than ever. So... here we go I had no choice but to get this canister filter up and running THAT DAY! A little daunting at first, seeing all the parts & pieces, I read the instructions about 12 times and then had it figured out...all except the order in which to fill with media/stack the 4 huge trays inside to handle my specific water problems. I googled Aquatop to get their phone number, called them and they were more than happy to talk me through it and welcomed a call-back should I need any further assistance in assembling it. I did however, have some difficulty in priming the unit. I spent 1 1/2 hours pumping the primer button before I figured out that I could actually fill the canister 3/4 full of water then use the remaining air inside of it to actually create the suction. They warn to NOT fill the canister with water, which is true dont fill it all the way up, but filling it 3/4 of the way will save atleast an hour in pushing the button, as well as an interesting looking dot patterned bruise from having to use my forearm to push after so long. I DONT consider this a flaw in any way of the unit, more like my inexperience costing me a lot of time. After all, they did say I could call them back for tips if I had trouble priming, I just didnt want to have to juggle a phone and try to prime at the same time since I didnt have any help at home.

It comes with 4 trays inside this model, I filled my trays like this, starting from the bottom going upwards:

BOTTOM TRAY: The blue sponge it comes with at the bottom of tray and the white filter it comes with on top of that

SECOND FROM THE BOTTOM: White filter it comes with on bottom of tray, then filled this one up with rinsed carbon

THIRD FROM THE BOTTOM: White filter it comes with on bottom of tray, then filled this one up with Ammonia Remover chips (used the whole 48oz carton) You may not need this media for your situation, but I sure did.

TOP TRAY: White filter it comes with on bottom of tray, Bio-balls and ceramic rings on top. I only had 50 bio-balls which wasnt enough, Aquatop recommends ceramic rings so I filled the rest with ceramic rings (OK to mix them).

PUT TRAY COVER ON THE TOP TRAY, THEN ITS READY FOR THE CANISTER LID.....SUPER EASY & CUSTOMIZABLE

Everything done, filter running so quietly I have to lean over the unit to hear it run. Water improvement within the hour, very noticeable improvement after 4 hours and by the next morning my water is CRYSTAL CLEAR!!! Its amazing, I have never seen the water this clean since we first started the tank over a year ago. I never write reviews, but after the miracle this canister filter just performed for me, I felt I had to let others know. Especially if you have goldfish, and if you have the ammonia and nitrate problem or overall BAD water quality problem like me, this really will be the answer to your troubles. Best of all, its VERY affordable, I couldnt believe how inexpensive this unit was at $129.99. Even though I only have 55 gal, it actually has the load of atleast a 100+ gal tank right now, and these fish are still growing fast. Someday if I do manage to get a bigger tank to accomodate all these fish, I know this filter can handle it. Its rated for 175 gallon tank. I'm thinking I might even get a thank you note from my fish :) THANK YOU AQUATOP!!

I bought this filter to replace my old Eheim 2217. I have a friend that uses these so I knew what I was getting.

The filter works great. It's huge, powerful and very quiet. My only complaint is that it doesn't come with enough bio media. I added some media of my own, hooked it up and couldn't be happier.

For the price, you can't go wrong with this thing. Just make sure you are prepared to add some bio media. Pot scrubbers from the dollar store work just fine. :)

I am new to the hobby of keeping aquariums. After much research through websites like plantedtank and aquarium central I decided upon buying this canister filter. I wanted the bigger version although the smaller ones are also great for smaller tanks I hear. I wanted a good quality filter, that has a decent track record of longevity, ease of use, and won't break the bank. Many users on other aquarium enthusiast based sites have had these filters for almost 5 years now running strong, although under different names for this product which was originally called SunSun, then Perfect, then Grech, and the final incarnation to stay is Aquatop. That was a decent enough track record to me to order this filter despite how leery I was about all the product name changes.

One thing to mention from the get go. TruAqua and Amazon are shipping out "pre-tested" units I think. They come with water in the unit and some black crud sometimes. I personally do not like this as I want everything as sterile as possible when I receive a product like this. I am not sure of the tank conditions they are testing this unit on before shipping it to me. Which means if you order an Aquatop unit now be prepared for it to be wet and parts used. I contacted Amazon about this and was told they would try to fix this pretesting every unit before shipping.

As for the unit itself it is well made. It comes with some filter floss media and some blue open foam for one tray, but it won't be enough. You will need to purchase your own media to put into the trays. I suggest going to your local dollar store and picking up some plastic pot scrubbers. You'll get about 6 for a dollar. Buy 4 packages and fill one of the media baskets with pot scrubbers. You'll have to set the scrubbers on their sides to stack them all in one basket. So put the blue foam with a white filter floss in the bottom tray. For the second tray up fill that one with the pot scrubbers. For the third tray up I suggest buying some of the sintered or ceramic bio media. I picked up 3 boxes of Fluvals Biomax ceramic media. Fill a tray full of this. Last tray I bought some generic chemical media mix. It contains both activated carbon and zeolite chips. Buy some panty hose, stick the carbon and zeolite chips in the panty hose and fill the top basket full. Stick one more filter floss pad at the very top and you are done. If you need more mechanical filtration instead of the chemical filtration I would use the 100% poly cushion filler sold at walmart. You can get a big sheet that you can cut down to size for a few bucks there. Just make sure all mechanical filtration is done before the biological filtration. Except one very top filter floss which is optional.

The only downsides to this unit are the thin plastic on the input/output valves and the pieces at the other end of the hose. So be careful. Use some vaseline or a pure 100% silicon based lubricant to lube everything down. Boil some water and insert the end of the hose into the water for about 15 seconds or so. This will make it much easier to slip the hose over the barbs.

Besides the pre-testing, my only other gripe is the spray bar. It's junk. Easy to crack and a pain to install. I might be creating my own from PVC pipe in the future. I am currently using the spray bar setup that came with this unit, but it is very thin plastic. The little elbow bend pieces MUST be used, so it makes placing the bar exactly where and how I want a pain.

For $120 you get a nice big unit with plenty of room for the media baskets. The pump seems to be great. It is easy to use, silent, and most easy to setup (minus to spray bar). The flow rate is good if you set up your media properly. So far it's been working great for me since I bought it.

i ordered from tru-aqua directly from their site. i have had the filter fro about three months now. I absolutely love this thing. i have it installed on a 55 gal. aquarium with 5 angelfish and 2 plecos in it. this things output blows the plecos all over the place. but they seem to like the current. they will go up in the current and turn horizontal and let the current blow them. kinda fun to watch. i had the spray bar installed but have recently taken it out. i left the elbow on the output to flow the current down the back glass. i'm in line with the other reviews about the bio balls. i have 12 in my filter. i've been meaning to get more, just havent gotten around to it. i took off a star (read update) b/c the first unit i received the motor casing was cracked....water everywhere. emailed aquatop, along with a picture, and they quickly got me an rma. the second unit also had a broken part, again an email and pic and phone call. the overnighted the replacement part. the guy said they never had this problem. but hey i dont know. i may have gotten 2 units packaged by the same person, that may have been mad at work that day.....we ALL have bad days. one more thing....i did a major water change and cleaned the internals of the filter. i also stirred my sandy bottom. the water almost looked like milk when i went to bed. the next morning was almost back the way it was before i cleaned and stirred. my old filters would have never did that. in my opinion...GREAT BUY!!! if i still had my 28gal. up and running. i would buy the cf300 for it.....

5 STAR UPDATE-7/8/12 still loving this filter. I have had ZERO problems out of this thing, been going strong for over a year now. the UV bulb is showing wear, it may go at any time. I haven't changed any of the filter pads, I just spray them out with the water hose.

one quick tip. I did a clean today and found out the output side where the quick disconnects are there is a back flow valve. Yes I knew it was there and why. but here is what I did. I took some needle nose pliers and removed the valve. HOLY CRAP!!!! the flow is noticeably more. even my wife commented on how much more water it was moving.

Hagen Exo Terra Silk Terrarium Plant

Hagen Exo Terra Silk Terrarium Plant, Small, AbutilonThis plant is bad ass. looks remarkably like a plant im fond of. Id reccommend this item for sure!!

These look good and the suction cups are working great (although I did use some spit right off the bat cause thats classic) ...but I wonder if the plastic variety would be better in my high-humidity terrarium ...the silk does look good though. I actually took one person's advice and went to the Michael's craft store and got loads of awesome plastic plants etc. for way less.

A picture of the whole plant would be more helpful. To me, it's not very large. I wouldn't have paid the price if I'd known how big it really was, but it works.

I tried to find Abuliton genus information but all I kept finding were references to cannabis bushes the leaves on this abuliton are similar to the cannabis plant there's no denying it but since they are fake and silk, there's no danger. I first found one bag in my local fish store in the reptile section and figured I'd give it a shot for my tropical freshwater aquarium as a background plant but first I emailed Hagen company to hear it from them that it was safe for use in water with fish and they confirmed that it was. So I soaked them in a bucket of water conditioned with Prime and added them to my tank. I love it! I bought 4 more and they are very natural looking and hide all my equipment and tubing and provide hiding places for my fish. I highly recommend these. Exo-Terra by Hagen also come in Ficus, Ruscus, Mandarin and Amapallo.

************************

update April 2010: These have been great for our Aquarium, and over time with some algae to them, they look pretty good. They don't fray as much as other silk plants do and only now after all this time are they showing signs of slight fraying the only problem is our plecos are constantly un-sticking them from the glass lol my advise is if you're just setting up your tank and it is dry still, place these where you want them and then, silicon the suction cup in that position so that they no longer move if you have sucker-mouth fish or large active tank busters. So if live plants are not for you for w/e reason, I do recommend these.

Want Hagen Exo Terra Silk Terrarium Plant Discount?

I was ready to send this back but once installed into my 20 gallon tall it actually looks great. A few quality issues so it only deserves 3 stars. The plant could use some more leaves to help cover the linking plastic. The suction cup is just okay, and I've already had it fall from the side. The back part by the suction cup is ugly so it needs to be suctioned to the back. I did have some metal wire exposed at the top by the suction cup and had to fix it. This does cover most of the back of my tank and my fish seem to be happy and playing through the leaves.

Make sure to rinse and soak before adding to your tank.

Update, the suction cup is more than adequate once you push it down pretty good. I actually have a hard time getting it off. I still stick to my review, needs more leaves to hide the wires!!!!

Aquatop UV Sterilizing Pump with UVP9 and 9W UV

Aquatop UV Sterilizing Pump with UVP9 and 9W UVLet me tell you something. When I first got this pump, at first I thought, this thing isn't going to clean Jack! Went on for 2 days and seen some improvement, but nothing to much in the way of amazement. By the 5th day my jaw just fell to the ground. I have an 80 gallon tank and let me tell you what, the water is crystal clear. If I have a complaint it's probably that it's a little bulky and is a little loud, but not a deal breaker. Seriously, for $35.00, what do you expect. Hope this helps somebody.

I had two issues with my tank (55gal, goldfish), at first the water turned cloudy white. I've had these fish for years and this has never happened before. I tried several chemical solutions, nothing worked. Then, on top of this, the water started turning green. I knew the green was algae so I thought the UV filter would at least clear that up. When I installed this filter, the water looked like pea soup. Not even four days later the water is crystal clear. This filter solved both my problems. Couldn't recommend it more.

This product made my 36 gallon freshwater tank crystal clear when nothing else would. The product, however is a little noisy. If you place the pump a little lower than the top of the tank it is a lot quieter. Has been working for about three months now without problems. The instructions could be better it was not clear how low you could place the pump in the tank. Good product; would buy again.

JBJ sold their line of UV Sterilizers to Aquatop and there have been nothing but improvements on an already outstanding product

What had always put me off about UV systems was the need for power heads, pumps, tubing , plumbing and the overall hassle of installing one not to mention the expense.

This little gem bypasses all of the above in one self contained unit. No hoses or tubing to run and no extra pump to buy, everything is pre built into one sleek, all inclusive unit which you can literally take out of the box, attach inside your tank or sump, plug it in and that's that.

What U.V sterilizers do is pull in water which flows past an encased in clear quartz tube but is exposed to UV light, which kills 99% of harmful pathogens. Humans can't see U.V light and it's dangerous to look at directly hence the bulb which is more of a tube encased in a quartz sleeve is covered in a black plastic case.

A little violet light lets you know the unit is working. As the water is exposed to the U.V harmful microscopic organisms that pose a threat to marine life or cause cloudy water are destroyed.

Most UV systems, including this one boast a 99% kill rate but keep mind enough good bacteria that colonize and lives in your filter and tank substrates aren't effected so the delicate ecosystem of an "established" tank remains unharmed.

The first time I installed one of these I had thought the water in my tank was clear however the following morning after I had installed the unit the water was so unbelievably crystal and pristine that had it not been for the aeration it would have looked like my fish were floating in air.

I have these in every single tank and they're marvelous.

PROS

1) Strong pump and outflow 211 GPH this is the same for all three units which range from tanks up to 40 , 100 and 150 gallons. I keep mine above the water line and get great aeration and surface movement.

2) Excellent build quality, the unit is surprisingly heavy and well made

3) Excellent kill rate

4) Maintains crystal clear water quality my fish are significantly more lively, vibrant and their overall appearance and health has improved.

5) Water parameters remain stable.

6) Effortless to install. This unit really is "plug and play" and can be installed and used right out of the box. Remember to check the quartz sleeve inside the unit for any damage prior to set up.

7) Good clear instructions and toll free support from the manufacturer.

8) Very affordable. Especially when compared to similar UV systems costing hundreds more and that's without the add-ons like a pump, power head, tubing, etc.

9) Bulb replacement is needed once a year, pre filter sponges (one comes with the unit) should be changed monthly or bi monthly depending your tank conditions a pack of three is around $8.00

10) Kills 99% of disease causing pathogens

I have these in all my tanks, from 40, 55,70, 125 and a soon to be 180. I buy the 13 watt rated regardless For a difference of a few bucks it's worth the upgrade.

* Note although humans can't see U.V it can damage our eyes. Never take the cover off and look at the UV light when on.

** When the violet light is flickering it's time to change the bulb.

** Never use a UV Sterilizer in a new or still cycling aquarium, these are for established aquariums only.

A 5 star product!

Combined two tanks into a new 40 gallon breeder tank three weeks ago. The water had stabilized but several weeks into the new tank process, it became cloudy and turned dark green. After a 20% water change, I added the Aquatop UVP-9 and within 24 the water had become crystal clear again and the green is fading fast. I used the silicone tubing that came with it and the addditional aeration has really energized the fish! The sponge inside the housing will be an additional area for biological filtration and is easy to access. I am still using the two old filters from the old tanks, but next time I'll probably cut to the chase and use one of these all-in-one units as the main filter for a smaller less populated tank.

[UPDATE] I recently ordered a second one of these units for a different tank, but couldn't seem to get the aeration to work. I wrote to Aquatop customer service and they sent a quick reply that solved the problem: It seems that I had screwed the blue tip down too far into the housing... It is actually adjustable! By backing it out about a half turn, I now have a great steam stream of aeration!

Cobalt Aquatics Neo-Therm 50-Watt with Plastic LED

Cobalt Aquatics Neo-Therm 50-Watt with Plastic LEDI purchased the 50 watt Cobalt Aquatics Neo Therm heater for a 7.5 gallon acrylic cube aquarium. I like the styling of the Neo Therm and it appears to be very well constructed.

Setting the heater up is very easy to do, and its high tech look blends in nicely in my aquarium.

As for digital heaters, I also own a few Fluval E series heaters which are well made and do an excellent job of heating my aquariums.

However, the Fluval E series has suffered from quality control issues (I had an E 300 fail at 10 months while another is still working after nearly two years).

Because of its digital microprocessor, the E series also has difficulty operating properly when not in a steady flow of water.

This must be considered to be a design flaw, since this heater should be capable of operating when mounted either vertically or horizontally.

Yet, when this author placed my Fluval E series heaters vertically they would not function properly.

However, when I placed them horizontally and directly in the flow of my filter's output tube, they've performed perfectly.

As for this design flaw, in a number of instances E series owners have posted on fishkeeper message boards, in regard to how they were forced to return their heaters because they could not get them to function properly.

As previously stated, I found a similar problem with my E series heaters which was remedied once the heaters were placed horizontally, and in the flow of a filter's output tube.

It is the complex microprocessor circuitry in the Fluval E series heaters that can prevent the heaters from functioning properly when they are placed vertically instead of horizontally.

The microprocessor in the E series simply determines that there is not enough water flow around the heater, and prevents the heater coil from turning on.

This has left many an E series owner completely exasperated.

Thus far, this has not been the case with my Neo Therm, which is working flawlessly and in the vertical position.

It is also interesting to note that in its instruction manual, Cobalt says not to place the Neo Therm horizontally (or upside down).

The other concern in regard to the Neo Therm involves the use of epoxy in which to seal the heater.

In fact, another purchaser of a Neo Therm heater who also left commentary, mentions the design flaw of the Marineland Stealthpro heaters which were also sealed with epoxy.

The problem with the Marineland heaters involved the chassis of the heater bursting when the heater would be removed from an aquarium, if it had not been unplugged first.

This author experienced this first hand when I forgot to unplug my Marineland Stealthpro 150, and the chassis of the heater split and began spewing smoke. However, I must also state that the Marineland 150 had worked flawlessly

for nearly a year before this incident occured.

However, I have heard of other Marineland owners who've stated that the chassis of the their heaters actually split while the heaters were still emersed in water.

So there is a serious design flaw with the Stealthpro series of heaters, which is why they were recalled by Marineland.

As a general rule, it is always a good idea to unplug a heater from an electrical outlet before you remove it from your aquarium.

However, sometimes a fishkeeper can forget to do so, which is why it is so crucial for the automatic shut off safety feature in an aquarium heater to function properly.

Hopefully, this will not be a problem with the Cobalt Aquatics Neo Therm.

Based on my early observations, the Neo Therm appears to be a very well constructed and cleverly designed aquarium heater which has the type of high-tech sleek aesthetic that looks great in a rimless aquarium.

If this unit can avoid the pitfalls of the Fluval E series and Marineland Stealthpro series, it should develop a loyal following.

Moreover, if the fishkeeping hobby ever needed an improved product, it is in regard to aquarium heaters, which for the most part leave much to be desired.

Hopefully, Cobalt has answered this need with its Neo Therm series. The company at present offers four versions of this heater ranging from 25 watts to 100 watts, which is good for smaller aquaria.

However, they have stated that they are developing more powerful versions of the Neo Therm for larger aquariums.

These heaters are not inexpensive, however, if they turn out to be reliable and can last for more than a year or two, Neo Therm will have a winner on its hands.

I will update this review after I have used the Neo Therm for a while to see if my early impressions still remain.

so far (2 months of use) this has been tough, reliable and accurate in the temperature that it heats to. no real complaints, but am reserving the 5th star until more time has passed

This heater is thin, but wider than most round heaters. The heater is small enough that I don't have to worry about any small fish getting stuck behind.

The material is made of "unbreakable" plastic. While this sounds great, we all know what happened to the recalled Marineland Stealth heaters made of similar black plastic. I'll keep my fingers crossed on this one.

Unlike the typical round tube heaters with two suction cups at top and bottom, this heater has a single slide holder with two cups to keep it in place. The heater simply glides in and out of the holder with almost no resistance to make maintenance easier.

As for the controls, there is a single button on top that rotates the temperature setting one way, in a round-robin fashion. The settings jump by 2 degrees, so you'll have to settle for 74 or 76 if what you really wanted was 75. The temperature keeps steady.

The only downside is that this heater lacks a second set of holder for the bottom of the heater. In my case, I mount the heater sideways at the bottom near the filter intake or outflow to maximize the efficiency with circulation. Some might need this with more aggressive fish population where the heater can be knocked down if hit on the bottom of the heater.

I would also recommend looking at the Fluval E 50-Watt Electronic Heater and HMA 50: Finnex 50 Watt w/ Electronic Controller Aquarium Titanium Heater (5-10 Gallons). They have both been around longer and proven to work at lower price as of date.

The setup for this heater was quite simple and easy to understand. I like that it shows the current temperature so I do not have to have a separate thermometer in the tank as well. On initial setup of a new tank, it brought temp up very quickly. I also like the sleek look of the unit and the fact that it has a holster it slides into to hold it on the tank. A little pricey, but I highly recommend.

Cal Pump PW5500 5,500 GPH 3/4 HP Waterfall Pump

Cal Pump PW5500 5,500 GPH 3/4 HP Waterfall PumpWe have a large pond with a creek and multiple waterfalls. We run two of these at a time and as already stated, pump will last between 1-2 years, that's it. I've done all the recommendations (run at least once a week, clean often, don't allow to freeze, etc.) and still the pump fails at regular intervals. Seems to be no rhyme or reason to the failures. I use to pull the pumps during the winter, put in buckets and run once a week as recommended, made no diff. We now leave in pond all year around and run during the winter, weather permitting. Few years back we had a really bad winter and couldn't run for roughly three months. When we could run they ran fine through that summer, no problems. This last year I had one go out January, put another in and it died in May. This is a great pump when it works and have been unable to find another as good for the price. I've resigned myself to the fact I'll be purchasing at least one pump each year and mark it up as the price I must pay to enjoy a margarita while listening to waterfalls, a babbling brook, all the while watching fish swim and lilies bloom!

P.S. I emailed the manufacture at one point and was told "Normally, the PW pumps last for several years". Does that mean two? :) Also, according to the manufacture (same email), these pumps cannot be rebuilt, "Unfortunately, we do not have a repair program. The PW Series pumps are sealed units and in most cases the repair cost would be short of a new pump."

I bought two of these pumps and both failed. The motor froze up on the first one after a couple years. With a wrench on the impeller nut I could not get the motor to budge. I ran the pump about 4 hours a week. I bought a second because the pump moved a lot of water for its price and I had been happy with it. Unfortunately after a year the second pump stopped and would just hum. I took the screen off and if I turned the impeller manually it would start running. Each time I turned off the power and turned it on again it would not turn over until I gave the impeller a spin. I opened the unit up and as soon as I did I could smell burnt electric parts. Two down. Note I do have another fountain with the same pump and it has been working fine for four years. It is only run about 8 hours a month so not a lot of use in this one.

This pump is more than I expected it to be. I originally purchased a couple of pumps from a "Common Retail Store that we all know", which were combined and still could not compete to this Cal pump 5500 GPH Waterfall Pump.

The volume of water is amazing...

Thanks Cal Pump and Thank you Amazon.com

Love this thing. Old one was run dry when house was vacant. This slipped right into it's place and pumps water strong and quiet.

I purchased the first one here from Ponds 123, 7 months later it began tripping the gfi then quit altogether. After filling out a questionnaire, they sent a replacement, postage paid by me, I received it in early February of this year. 3 days ago that one quit too!! Ponds 123 refuses to replace the second one because it is now 1 month outside the combined warranty period calculated from the original purchase date of the first pump. I guess they make enough money selling two pumps per year, and getting no return customers! I would never buy another one of these pumps, nor anything from Ponds 123 again! I vote with my business.

Fish Bubble

Fish BubbleThe moment I saw these on Chiasso, I had to have them. But I didn't want to spend $100's on them. This was a perfect purchase! I would NOT recommend using them as fish bowls unless you can clean them out daily. They have no filtration and start to look not so awesome after a few days of fish eating and business-doing! Maybe plants or other non-living decor!

This size is WAY to small for a betta! A betta needs at the minimum of 2.5 gal and does best in 5 gallons +. Also, betta JUMP! Without a cover for the opening at the top, you will find your betta on the floor quickly. You will need to do a water exchange on this tank every two days, or the poor water quality will harm your fishie friend.

DO NOT follow these instructions on cleaning! When you clean you CANNOT USE SOAP! You will kill your fish! No matter how well you rinse, there will always be a residue of soap left on the walls.

I have kept betta fish for over 5 years and breed them. Please follow my advice!

I do see how this could be used for other living things, such as plants. It could be a neat project for children watching root systems grow.

i am buying this to put plants inside of to add another odd yet modern and awesome thing to my living room. I am more than sure this will be perfect

As for putting a beta in this i would never. Betas DO NOT like to be in such small spaces. I don't know why everyone thinks this. Beats like large, shallow tanks. I own a beta and i gave her a 5 gallon tank all to herself and she swims around like no ones business. If you purchase this for a beat after reading this than you are a cruel person. This is much to small for any living thing (other than a small plant)

this is horrible. no fish should be put in a "tank" like this. it is far too small to house even one betta, has no way to filter, heat or even light. your fish will likely be sick or dead within weeks if you try to use this. the only real use for this tank would be to grow live aquarium plants to use in a REAL fish tank. remember: fish are friends, not decorations.

This product is exactly what I expected it to be, in fact it looks much better in person. I didn't use it to place a goldfish but I used it to hold some soil for a vine that I had growing on a wall and it serves the purpose well. The shipping time was only two days. I am very pleased with this product and service=)

Carib Sea ACS00050 Aragonite Reef Sand for Aquarium, 40-Pound

Carib Sea ACS00050 Aragonite Reef Sand for Aquarium, 40-PoundThis sand is very pretty in color its really light like almost a white but not quite. The grade is nice the snails and starfish seem to like it. When you have your night lights on it kinda glows in the dark. The price was fair and it doesn't cloud your water too much in 24 hours my tank was clear and within 2 days it was crystal clear like the fish were swimming in thin air. I did rinse this sand before adding it to my tank. I would recommend this product to anyone and I would buy it again. The only thing I did miss when I put this into my tank and added the water was the smell of the ocean didn't get that with this sand? other than that it is great stuff.

The substrate is superb, and comes ready to set into an aquarium as is.... The only thing that bothered me was the weight... just kidding of course, I mean for 40lbs it was sure worth the money. Satisfied.

A very good substrate in my 65 gallon reef. I only wish they made the instructions of needing to wash it off prior to use bigger. It comes damp/wet, so I assumed this was the ready-to-use stuff as with other live sand. After filling the tank bottom and adding water, the whole tank filled with the fine particles which took a couple days to clear. The fine particles covered my live rocks, and took a little bit of blowing off with a baster to clean up. I think I finally have it under control. Great substrate, just make sure to rinse out in a bucket prior to use!

Lees Aquarium Original Undergravel Filter 20 Inch

Lees Aquarium Original Undergravel Filter 20 InchBasically you get what you pay for with this one. Yes it gets the job done but you may have to add your own tweaks to it. First, the plastic is very thin and brittle which is a bad combination with poorly fitting parts and no assembly instructions. All you have to go by is the picture on the box, if I had never used a filter like this before I probably would have been very confused. The parts fit poorly so when you are trying to fit them together they break. Second, the "airstones" are just this plastic foam stuff that makes too big bubbles so I replaced them with real airstones. Third, for some reason the bubbles don't flow nicely, but build up and then loudly blup out every 10 seconds or so. Finally, it doesn't come with ALL of the tubing you will need, only the two short pieces that come directly from the bubblers, you will need to buy a T-valve and a long piece of tubing to connect it all to your air pump. So if you're trying to save a few bucks this will serve it's purpose after some frustration, but if you are looking for a quality product.. keep looking.

Marina Light Unit 7W, Suitable for Betta Kits, Goldfish Kits & Small Pals

Marina Light Unit 7W, Suitable for Betta Kits, Goldfish Kits & Small PalsThis light works very well for lighting the smaller Marina tanks. The best feature though is that the incandescent bulb really warms the water to a proper tropical fish temperature making it much more hospitable.

I was happy when I found this item I had been looking everywhere for it. It's great the only thing that I wish I knew was there is no on off switch so I need to get a timer for it. But other then that its great .

I bought 2 of these to light up two individual 2 and a half gallon tanks, they work great for my application even though they are meant for marina tanks

Want Marina Light Unit 7W, Suitable for Betta Kits, Goldfish Kits & Small Pals Discount?

The light doesn't light up the half gallon Marina tank very well at all. It's about the equivalent to shining a small pocket flashlight with almost depleted batteries through the top. Keep in mind my small tank has a maroon lid, so there is quite a bit of light filtering going on. However, even when turning on the light while it's off of the tank, the light output is minimal. It doesn't put out much heat either. I recommend looking at other lights, as you get what you pay for with this particular unit.

The seller on the other hand is top notch! Very fast order processing as well as fast shipping. 5 starts to the seller!

Eco Earth for Small Animal and Insects

Zoo Med Eco Earth Loose Coconut Fiber Substrate, 8 QuartsI use three of these bricks in a 75 gallon tank for my Ball Python. Local pet store charges $20 for this pack and Amazon sells for $8. This is the perfect medium to keep your humidity up.....guarantees full sheds too if you keep it moist.

I originally reviewed this product with 5 stars as awesome(see original review below, but I had to change my review. I picked up my box turtle the other day to move him to clean the enclosure and noticed that he had some of the fibers from this product by his rear leg, no big deal-I'll just pull it out...WRONG! Turned out to be a HUGE mass of fibers that were embedded and impacted between the inside of his rear leg and his shell, or actually the skin under his shell, actually into his shell cavity. There was so much that I had to call for help from my sister. The turtle was getting too stressed and I couldn't move fast enough holing his leg and getting it out. Double teaming it we pulled out a significant mass of fibers from this coconut fiber substrate, I would guess it was a solid 2 inch mass in the side of his body, pushing so much that his front was swollen to compensate. I won't buy this product again, I am scared for my turtle's life if I do. Instead I found mushroom compost, natural sphagnum moss, sphagnum peat moss and washed play sand. Mixed all of that together and topped it with some additional moss and hay and he is loving it and I am breathing a sigh of relief. I don't wish this experience on anyone so I caution you against using this with animals that burrow and have a shell like turtles and tortoises.

If this product was sifted and the large fibers removed from the powdery coconut then it would be safe, but with the fibers I don't believe it is safe for turtles or tortoises.

PREVIOUS REVIEW

I have tried many substrates for my box turtle, and he was just "good" with them. I saw this in the store and bought one brick to try it. Followed the instructions, using hot water and it expanded beautifully, didn't have anything to drain either. Put it in my turtle's cage and he went crazy! He loved it and started digging right away, then ran back and forth and dug himself another hole, he was so cute. He liked it so much I bought a 3 pack and added more, it stays nice and clean, he adores it and moves it around to suit his needs, it is non-toxic and antimicrobial...I won't do anything else. I also notices that he is more energetic and has a better appetite since I added this substrate. I have nothing bad to say about it. WARNING, don't try to expand more than one brick at a time unless you have a big enough container, it does expand considerably and I found out the hard way that it can crack a cheap plastic bucket...

GREAT STUFF!

I was really happy to find these bricks for such a great price on Amazon. The kids have a hermit crab, and this makes a great substrate for its habitat.

Works as described. No odor and really retains the nutrient well. Using it for hydroponics both indoor and out. Great for cloning tomatoes too. Very pleased.

This did a great job of replacing our old substrate for our hermit crabs. The bricks rehydrated easily and were very cost effective. The crabs actually have been a lot more active since they got into this substrate. A great deal at this price.
