I also run a canister filter with extra charcoal.I sprinkle a half cup or so of these chips in the cat litter periodically, when things start to smell "not so fresh". The same thing that makes them effective at removing ammonia from water makes them effective at removing it from the litter and air. They are quite a bit bigger than litter, so when you sift some get caught in the scoop, but oh well.I bought this for my 3 tanks. I measured out how much was needed for the size of the tank. I put it loosely in a knee high pantyhose and tied a knot. I put it in all the tanks, and when I took a reading of the water the ammonia levels did not change. You also have to regenerate the chips every 5 days in salt which is an extra step I don't know if it helps.Like the title reads: They are a good quality brand. However, they're are some down falls. I found a little too much power in the bottom of the carton. Also, I would love to have pellets! They make carbon pellets.. So why not Ammo Pellets!?!!?
